XSF Discussion - 2017-03-09

  1. jonasw

    good day, XSF

  2. Tobias

    ahoy

  3. Ge0rG

    A good day indeed.

  4. SamWhited

moparisthebest: When you get a second, could you glance over my PR and give a final thumbs up or thumbs down? I just made minor editorial changes (making sure things were linked properly) https://github.com/xsf/xeps/pull/445

  5. moparisthebest

SamWhited, gave it my thumbs up

  6. SamWhited

awesome; will merge in a bit and then figure out who I need to ping at IANA to get everything registered properly.

  7. moparisthebest

SamWhited, https://www.iana.org/assignments/tls-extensiontype-values/tls-extensiontype-values.xhtml#alpn-protocol-ids says to contact 'Joe Salowey' if I read it right

  8. moparisthebest

    for ALPN protocols anyway

  9. SamWhited

yah, I'm not actually sure how their expert review process works; I'll double check.

  10. moparisthebest

    I also have no idea

  11. moparisthebest

also SamWhited someone said you should register SRV service names, but also have no idea about that

  12. SamWhited

moparisthebest: Thanks, I'll look into it and update the IANA considerations section if anything else needs to be registered.

  13. moparisthebest

    thanks!

  14. moparisthebest

somewhat related question, I recall when I first proposed this someone (maybe dwd?) said it should eventually be an RFC instead of a XEP but we'd cross that bridge when we came to it, is that still true? and is XEP Draft status where that bridge lies?

  15. Ge0rG

Is it possible to find out when a contact was last online? Something like https://xmpp.org/extensions/inbox/last-seen-online.html maybe?

  16. Ge0rG

    [xep 256]? [xep 319]?

  17. fippo

    ge0rg: xep 12?

  18. Zash

    > This is merly a description since the protocol is already described in RFC 6121

  19. Ge0rG

So what is actually used by im clients and servers in the wild?

  20. Zash

  21. Guus

who here can help me figure out how to fix the site?

  22. Zash

    Is the site broken?

  23. Guus

    the automatic deployment to it

  24. Guus

I checked in a change, which locally works. Travis agrees with it too, but at the server, something stagnates

  25. Guus

I don't have access there, so I'm not sure of the details. Best I can figure is that my local environment nor Travis is a good representation of our production environment.

  26. Guus

I'd like to fix that (and resolve the issue causing the stagnation in the process)

  27. Guus

this might relate to the same problem: https://github.com/xsf/xmpp.org/issues/247

  28. Ge0rG

Zash: so that proto XEP is in the inbox for over four years now? Awesome.

  29. moparisthebest

they said protoxeps never get removed Ge0rG

  30. moparisthebest

    cause it'd break links

  31. Zash

I didn't see any definite rejection in that log, but I didn't look further.

  32. Lance

    That protoxep became https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0318.html

  33. Zash

    No redirect in place?

  34. Guus

intosi, kev, tobias - you're the only people that I'm aware that can help me out (with access to the webserver) so unless you redirect my efforts elsewhere, I'll keep poking you for help

  35. Ge0rG

Looks like somebody else had exactly the same problems with counting smileys as I did yesterday... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13830177

  36. Ge0rG

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13832787 http://homebrewserver.club/have-you-considered-the-alternative.html - longish article about federated and encrypted messaging

  37. daniel

    >developed by Open Whisper Systems, a non-profit Lol

  38. kaboom

it depends on the definition of non-profit 😉

  39. daniel

kaboom, non-profit is actually pretty well defined

  40. daniel

it doesn't mean mean "does not return any profit" because in that case Uber would be a non-profit as well

  41. Zash

    "non-profit" or "not for profit"?

  42. kaboom

return any profit to whom? most organisations often called non-profits have paid employees

  43. Zash

    Share holders?

  44. kaboom

if (one of) the share holder(s) is such an employee?

  45. Zash

I'm sure share holder payouts and employee salaries have different tax rates.

  46. kaboom

true, here in germany they're usually less then salaries

  47. Guus

I think I figured out what is wrong with the website, and why Travis didn't pick up on that change. Travis uses the latest vesion of Pelican, while our webserver uses an older one.
