XSF Communications Team - 2019-11-05

  1. Nÿco

should I include https://news.jabberfr.org/2019/10/compte-rendu-de-lag-de-jabberfr-du-2019-10-09/ in next newsletter? I'd say no

  2. Link Mauve

Hi CommTeam, do you have some material targetting users, mostly technical ones who have already heard of Jabber ten years ago?

  3. Link Mauve

This would be to hand out as flyers at the next SCAM event.

  4. Link Mauve

There is already Arc’s server guide 2017, but I was thinking about something more for users.

  5. pep.

Link Mauve, maybe bring this up during today's SCAM meeting. Tbh I'm not sure where this falls

  6. Link Mauve

    It falls in ten days.

  7. pep.

I mean I'm not sure this is comm or scam tbh :/

  8. pep.

(also why I'd prefer both together)

  9. Link Mauve

    pep., it’s definitely communication.

  10. Link Mauve

Whether it’s for events or not is irrelevant.

  11. pep.

    Is it

  12. pep.

So SCAM shouldn't worry about that at all?

  13. pep.

What do we even go to conferences for

  14. Link Mauve

Or maybe it is, dunno, that’s how I understood CommTeam until now.

  15. emus

    > Hi CommTeam, do you have some material targetting users, mostly technical ones who have already heard of Jabber ten years ago? > This would be to hand out as flyers at the next SCAM event. Awesone idea! This must go through jabber.ccc.de 😁

  16. Link Mauve

    emus, what do you mean?

  17. emus

Link Mauve: I think there are many "old" jabber people pep intends to adress. and also someone must push that to the Pidgins main page :D

  18. Link Mauve

Note that they might not all be in that case, but that’s for a technical conference.

  19. emus

    I just make fun

  20. emus

Still, actively looking for "old" potts might be valuable

  21. Nÿco

Link Mauve : what do you need?

  22. Nÿco

    1. what target(s)? 2. what is (are) the problem(s)? 3. what form/shape?

  23. Link Mauve

    Nÿco, see scam@muc.xmpp.org at 16:24:02.

  24. Link Mauve

    I’m not totally sure tbh.

  25. Link Mauve

I think the target is technical people, free software people, mostly users?

  26. Nÿco

    that's for 1.

  27. Link Mauve

The problem, to get them to use XMPP I guess!

  28. Nÿco

    that's 2.

  29. Link Mauve

And the form, I was thinking about a flyer but it could take other forms, I was planning on also doing demos of various clients and depending on how the people interact with me to show them other ones too.

  30. Nÿco

I personally wish to support more the SCAM team than I did in the past I think the effort is awesome and the outcome is actually excellent

  31. Nÿco

    3. flyers or demos, good

  32. Link Mauve

    I’d prefer s/or/and/ :)

  33. Nÿco

that's definitely an effort to be led by the commTeam imho, in support of SCAM

  34. Nÿco

    ok for the s :)

  35. Link Mauve

That’s also how I understood it until now.

  36. pep.

Nÿco, should I redirect the "We need to find a design/markety person" to commteam then?

  37. pep.

Do you also have a budget?

  38. Nÿco

so the server triptic by Arc is a good base, may be it needs a little update: some info, but mostly a better visual

  39. Link Mauve

Note that ideally we’d have something printed in ten days.

  40. emus

pep., Link Mauve: Where else to you have contact with people which have aciebt ideas about xmpp?

  41. pep.

    emus, ?

  42. Nÿco

pep. I don't understand "Nÿco, should I redirect the "We need to find a design/markety person" to commteam then?"

  43. Link Mauve

    ancient?

  44. pep.

    Nÿco, see scam@

  45. Nÿco

    > Do you also have a budget? nope and 10 days is too short

  46. Link Mauve

    I agree.

  47. pep.

pep.> Action for SCAM before closing, I guess, find somebody that can do design/markety stuff

  48. Nÿco

    no time to check scam

  49. emus

Link Mauve: You target people who have old-fashioned ideas about xmpp or?

  50. pep.

Nÿco, sure, 10 days is too short, but we would use these for any other conference afterwards

  51. Link Mauve

So I was planning on doing something less good than what could be possible, in order to have something at least.

  52. Link Mauve

emus, not only obviously, but many people do remember their Jabber days, using Pidgin some ten years ago and stopping because their contacts also stopped.

  53. Nÿco

    for 10-years-fashioned users, I always recommend: https://www.erlang-solutions.com/blog/welcome-to-the-third-generation-of-instant-messaging-part-1-2.html https://www.erlang-solutions.com/blog/welcome-to-the-third-generation-of-instant-messaging-part-2-2.html

  54. Link Mauve

XMPP was quite popular amongst free software people in France back then.

  55. Link Mauve

Nÿco, my goal is to make them use it again, using better clients and maintained servers. :)

  56. Link Mauve

Explaining I can do when I see them.

  57. Nÿco

I think it is a wrong target, let them be disappointed

  58. Link Mauve

At least two years ago, there were a lot of them at this conference in Toulouse.

  59. Nÿco

generally, in business/marketing, if the cost of acquisition is 1, then the cost of retention is 10, and the cost to regain lost users is 100 numbers are only orders of magnitude

  60. Nÿco

so, try, you'll get golden feedback, I think that's worth

  61. Link Mauve

    Heh. ^^

  62. Link Mauve

Do you think we should skip free software events and instead go to other conferences?

  63. Nÿco

Arc's server guide would benefit from "data", "GDPR", "self-hosting/on-premise", "sovereignty" and such

  64. Nÿco

    wat

  65. Nÿco

but Arc's guide in only for the server, meaning it targets admins

  66. Nÿco

for users, I'd rather have a list of maintained, modern, and feature-complete apps

  67. Nÿco

for the "10-years-ago" XMPP/Jabber users, I'd rather present an offer that's better than what they have switched to...

  68. Nÿco

"better" in their system of thinking

  69. emus

    > I think it is a wrong target, let them be disappointed Still, if they see that there is something new it might bring back expertise which is very important. I wouldnt loose that chance. If they were convince of the idea 10 years back they might still are

  70. Nÿco

    and what's new, precisely?

  71. Nÿco

    (asking your opinion)

  72. Nÿco

(imho, archiving has changed a lot, as well as UX, that is team chat, but we don't have any modern and feature-complete team chat app in XMPP)

  73. emus

Hard to say from my knowledge.

  74. emus

It`s true. still you can say that XMPP is still there

  75. Nÿco

that's the problem: XMPP is still _there_ :) with Pidgin, Psi and Gajim

  76. emus

    > for 10-years-fashioned users, I always recommend: > https://www.erlang-solutions.com/blog/welcome-to-the-third-generation-of-instant-messaging-part-1-2.html > https://www.erlang-solutions.com/blog/welcome-to-the-third-generation-of-instant-messaging-part-2-2.html The links doesnt work anymore

  77. pep.

    they do

  78. emus

    🤔

  79. Nÿco

links work for me, I copied-pasted them

  80. emus

    will check another browser

  81. Nÿco

    maybe too many trackers?

  82. emus

    > that's the problem: XMPP is still _there_ :) > with Pidgin, Psi and Gajim Don`t be so negative 😀 There is many more: www.omemo.top I would still give it a try. At least people see see there is something different from Pidgin

  83. emus

    Nÿco: adblock

  84. Nÿco

    yeah, I thought :/

  85. Nÿco

oh yeah, forgot the obvious e2e, sorry

  86. emus

    > oh yeah, forgot the obvious e2e, sorry You can make it a state of the art information. people can decide on their own

  87. Nÿco

good, good, so indeed, we have some material to wake them up?

  88. emus

I think haveing a chat with georg an Holger will give you more material

  89. emus

    (excl. the sarkasm 😃)
