sam: I'm following Dino, Gajim, Mattj, JC, pep, goffi, Tigase, Kaidan, XMPP, Snikket and a few others on Mastodon.

  2. DebXWoody

It would be nice to see more of the projects on movim. 🤷

  3. sam

movim requires your username and password for the account you want to use with it, that always felt like a bit of a non-starter to me. I guess you could always create a separate account, but then your friends aren't on it, so the whole thing never really worked for me.

  4. sam

I was thinking it might be nice to have something like this (except with pretty images and styling and probably generated from a data source that's easier to update instead of just hand rolled): https://mellium.im/follow/

  5. DebXWoody

sam: I have a own account for social media (movim.eu) For Mastodon I also need a own account. It's the same issue, but I like movim much more than Mastodon.

  6. Link Mauve

sam, alternatively you can install Movim yourself.

  7. Licaon_Kter

Thoughts on _"Decentralized forge: distributing the means of digital production"_ https://staticadventures.netlib.re/blog/decentralized-forge/ ...covers a lot of protocols and tech, and XMPP is mentioned (OAuth and Salut-a-Toi)

  8. sam

Link Mauve: I will do almost anything *not* to run my own stuff :)

  9. sam

DebXWoody: it's true that twitter et al. make you create an account with them and I could do that with Movim too, but Movim has the option of already having my existing friends (and me not having to make them see me in their contact list twice), so it's in a weird place where technically it could be the same, but the experience is bad for my friends and it makes me not want to do it because I'd either lose the nice benefits or have to give them too much access.

  10. Link Mauve

sam, don’t you run your XMPP clients on your computer too? :)

  11. Link Mauve

You could do the same with Movim, although that might not be as easy atm.

  12. sam

Link Mauve: Yes, but that is very obviously different.

  13. Link Mauve

    How so?

  14. sam

Managing always-on infrastructure that has to be configured and put on a server somewhere vs. running an app?

  15. sam

Even if this doesn't have to be always-on, I can't click a button and have it appear only when I want it.

  16. Link Mauve

Ah no, Movim doesn’t have to be that, it’s a normal XMPP client which only has to be on when you want to use it.

  17. sam

It doesn't advertise or position itself that way. I suppose it *technically* could be done, but I can't install and use it easily from my repos right now, so that's more than I want to do

  18. sam

🤷 nothign against movim personally, I just think it's put itself in a weird position where I don't necessarily want to use it.

  19. sam

I mean, I love the idea, I just don't think XMPP is a good fit for what they want to do in a lot of ways. Maybe if we had some concept like OAUTH for delegating partial permissions it would be fine, but for now it's not something I'd want to use for my projects. Sorry.
