  1. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Sam: so I still can kick out a toot?

  2. Licaon_Kter

emus (XSF Com. Team): for the recording?

  3. emus (XSF Com. Team)

No, Sam ask for a toot

  4. Licaon_Kter

emus (XSF Com. Team): yes, but the event was yesterday...

  5. emus (XSF Com. Team)

ah noo.. why am I too stupid to deal with my calendar. so today is no event?

  6. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Sorry Sam, I hope I can improve next time. Lets try to catch up with some advance

  7. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Other then that, the draft phase for the Newsletter startet. Happy to anyone supoorting to commit things from the Notepad to the Github portal

  8. Sam

So I tried to figure out how to make a new youtube channel and couldn't. Maybe its' something about the account I have being an apps account (I already have 2 though, so apprently I did this at some point)

  9. Sam

If anyone else knows how to easily make one and can make an "XMPP Office Hours" channel and add me (sam@samwhited.com) as an admin I can start uploading videos

  10. Sam

Oh wait, maybe I have to create a "Brand Account", that sounds like it might be a channel

  11. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Maybe we should have a brand acxount πŸ˜…

  12. Sam

I was just about to ask: Would it be good to just name this as an XSF account instead? If it's only ever office hours stuff or doesn't end up getting used that's fine, but if we have videos from summit or something we'd have a place for them

  13. Sam

Eg. should I name it "XMPP Office Hours" or "XMPP Standards Foundation" and then just have a playlist for office hours?

  14. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Sam: I would be in, but thats not on my decision unfortunately πŸ˜• I will ask

  15. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Sam: we have a go 😊

  16. emus (XSF Com. Team)

    - Do you want Youtube because of scale, or shall we also create a Vimeo account?

  17. Sam

I don't think a Vimeo account is free if you upload stuff

  18. Sam

I don't think it really matters though, most people are on YouTube not Vimeo and I think we have to go where the people are.

  19. emus (XSF Com. Team)

I will create an email for xsf commteam, then we can register this to it Ah ok

  20. Sam

Okay, let me know when you've got it setup and I'll add it; thanks!

  21. emus (XSF Com. Team)

    yes

  22. Sam

Okay, I sort of customized it a bit with an avatar and some links/info and the like

  23. Sam

If there's anything else we can do it later

  24. emus (XSF Com. Team)

    Cool

  25. Jeybe

Would suggest that instead using Vimeo as second account, you could create a PeerTube account additional to the YouTube account

  26. Sam

Jeybe: can you suggest an instance?

  27. Jeybe

Sam: Difficult, don't really know that many instances, as I follow from my Mastodon account. German instances would be https://digitalcourage.video (non-profit organisation) and https://tube.tchncs.de (from an individual) Both with closed registrations, but you surely can ask for an account. Otherwise you can find MANY instances here: https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-list

  28. Sam

This is the problem I've had: they're either closed or aren't a good fit for one reason or another.

  29. Licaon_Kter

Jeybe: tchncs.de is from the same org as trashserver.net xmpp server, right?

  30. Jeybe

    No, same as social.tchncs.de

  31. Jeybe

    Trashserver is from https://thomas-leister.de

  32. Jeybe

(Milan is the guy behind tchncs.de Thomas is the guy behind trashserver.net)

  33. Licaon_Kter

    I stand corrected :)

  34. Jeybe

I know that Milan opens the registrations from time to time, so he may provide an account. Digitalcourage states they'd provide an account for befriended organisations so they may be an option as well. But I guess if we did a bit of asking around we may find a fit. What would be you criteria?

  36. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Sam, if you want I can ask them from my role

  37. Sam

I'm not really sure. I don't want to have to jump through hoops to register personally, but maybe someone else is willing to draft an email somewhere.

  38. Sam

I wouldn't want to upload to both FWIW, YouTube is good enough for me, so someone would have to manage it unless we can sync it with youtube somehow (or visa versa, I just don't want to have to manually create videos in both)

  39. Sam

And I guess we'd want one where the primary language is English since that's what the XSF operates in? Though that might matter less

  40. Jeybe

Would wonder if there isn't already an automatism for that, as this wouldn't be the first channel I know uploading to both youtube and peertube

  41. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Yeah, Sam you dont need to register from your side, just give me a bit more time to do it via an "official" account

  42. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Sam, I suggest we should put the word XMPP Office Hours: Title in the video title so its easier to find when searching for xmpp

  43. emus (XSF Com. Team)

other then that: Great that you step forward with this!

  44. Sam

emus (XSF Com. Team): that's going to make video titles very long. As long as it's in the description and it's in the Office Hours playlist I think it's fine

  45. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Hmm, at lease maybe put the word XMPP? πŸ˜‹οΈ

  46. emus (XSF Com. Team)

You can create "playlists" under this title as well. But never mind we can do that another day

  47. emus (XSF Com. Team)

I wouldnt care if its ab bit longer, but prefer to have it allocated. because the title without might not say too much to someone "external"

  48. Sam

emus (XSF Com. Team): it's on the XMPP channel and it's in the description, I don't think we need to abuse the title for that

  49. Sam

But I don't really know what best practices are either, so if you really want I can go change it, it just feels redundant. I think it will show XMPP either way

  50. emus (XSF Com. Team)

I think many people check for the titles when deciding on a video. But is okay, just my 2ct

  51. emus (XSF Com. Team)

MEMO for newsletter: add XSF Youtube account https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf3Kq2ElJDFQhYDdjn18RuA/featured πŸŽ‰οΈ

  52. wurstsalat

that’s cool! thanks for creating that channel, and thanks for recording these talks! :)

  53. Sam

Maybe https://tilvids.com/ would be good if someone wants to make a PeerTube as well? They seem to be educational content

  54. Jeybe

Sam: Seems to be a nice instance

  55. Jeybe

You may have to check how much storage you're allowed to use

  56. Sam

Uggh, we really need a better story around discovery for federated services. This is hard.

  57. Sam

Even with their little discovery widget (which is great) it's so hard to tell which isntances are managed well and aren't going to just dissapear tomorrow.

  58. Jeybe

Sam: It's not that hard for every service. For example, there are quite curated lists out there for XMPP and Mastodon. But yeah, for PeerTube it's a bit of a mess. Got through the PeerTube instance list for the last hour or so and it's still really hard to tell which instances are trustworthy. Especially, since almost none of them provide a good privacy policy nor an imprint or some other concrete information about the operator and his/her dealing with ones data.
