Hi! I don't want to start 'religious wars'; we are plenty of them. I am a Matrix and XMPP supporter. I have a question that many people ask me: what are the substantial differences between the two systems? People ask which would be the better solution. The XMPP apps do not handle voice messages, and it seems to me.

  2. Martin

Matrix is more slack like while most xmpp mobile apps take the whatsapp approach.

  3. Martin

What do you mean by it doesn't handle voice messages? They are just done by http-upload and most clients support that. Most clients also have the recording included.

  4. emus (XSF Com. Team)

nicola: which one do not support it?

  5. nicola

I am sorry. I am in the Apple ecosystem and probably there aren’t efficient solutions

  6. emus (XSF Com. Team)

nicola: Maybe take a look at Monal, I dont know if Siskin can do it, but I know that this feature will be supported in the next update

  7. emus (XSF Com. Team)

    of Monal

  8. nicola

    > nicola: Maybe take a look at Monal, I dont know if Siskin can do it, but I know that this feature will be supported in the next update Tks

Do not use ChatSecure I suggest

  10. Licaon_Kter

    Sam: Y R U trolling Matthew of Matrix? :)

  11. Sam

I'm not, I'm explaining why it's not a good replacement for freenode

  12. Sam

I don't know who Matthew is

  13. eta

    Sam: matrix corp CEO

  14. Sam

Gotcha. Figures he'd show up and make nonsense claims like that then

  15. Sam

I'll assume the not disclosing who he is is in good faith and he just didn't think about it, but it would have been nice to know

  16. Licaon_Kter

Sam: Arathorn So you've just walked up into a trap? Funny he won't dispell the FUD of "minority" in the actual company. As usual. 32M users, they might need another round of $5mil from VCs to keep those servers alive. No Slack killer in sight yet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  17. Sam

oh well, too late to rephrase for him now

  18. Licaon_Kter

    👍

  19. MattJ

32M became "300K DAU" later in the thread, even at 30% reporting that's just 1M DAU, so where did the 32M come from?

  20. Licaon_Kter

    MattJ: DAU is real users?

  21. MattJ

Daily active users, so supposedly yes :)

  22. Licaon_Kter

    Federation?

  23. Licaon_Kter

    Why 30%?

  24. MattJ

Assuming 32M is total registered accounts, it means that out of 32M registered accounts only 1M (3%) are actively used at most (trusting the 30% phone home estimate)

  25. MattJ

The stats are based on Synapse (the Matrix server implementation) reporting home with stats about active users. He's saying they reckon that is only enabled on 30% of deployments

  26. MattJ

Lots of inaccurate guesswork. I suspect the 32M number comes from registrations with their identity server (which is a central node on the network), and the only other number they can confidently claim is that at least 300K accounts are used daily.

  27. emus (XSF Com. Team)

Well, what ever we see in the numbers. They at least get capital in and also have much better communication and advertisement (if think thats good or not) I try my best to get better stuff for xmpp in general. but I cannot compete with an agency of people

  28. emus (XSF Com. Team)

And also, I wouldnt wonder if they one day overtake us, if they not have already
