But is it really too much, if we ask then to tell someone, here or reference an email?

The longer answer is that if we rely on people doing multiple steps some of them won't see the message or will forget. If we can't rely on getting a notification it's not actually all that helpful. Alternatively, some people who were on the verge of signing up wont' because there are more hoops to jump through which is also not desirable. This is a mistake the XSF constantly makes and it's one we need to stop doing. We can easily make this less work for everyone with some simple automation that in this case won't even cost us any of our time.
