Thanks to Neox for the translation of the newsletter. As far as I know, the fiscal hosting does not concern French people who want to make some donations. Isn't it? Concerning the announcement of the XSF elections. I would have translated "XSF Board (business related)" into French: "administratif".

  121. Licaon_Kter

J茅r么me: why are the french not allowed to donate?

It seems to me that the French tax authorities do not necessarily accept the tax deduction when the donation is made to a non-French organization. I'll check quickly.

  128. neox

J茅r么me, the french translation is a collaborative process, you could participate next month, announcements are on LinuxFr and JabberFr XMPP channels 馃榾

Yes, I was late for this month.

The organization may be located in France or in a Member State of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Iceland, Norway or Liechtenstein. If it is not approved, you must prove that it has a similar objective and characteristics to organizations located in France and eligible for the scheme.

  132. J茅r么me

Following a quick search on the tax services website, the donation can be made but it is not tax deductible if it is not made in an EU member country.

  133. emus

J茅r么me: This is an interesting spot and it may also apply to DE

  134. emus

    Sam

  135. J茅r么me

I will check with Neox but I would like to find an organization that could accept donations (allowing a tax deduction) to spread them to other organizations that would be located in another country, eventually.

I think that an organization having a non-profit activity and being recognized as having a public interest activity, located in the USA should have some kind of subsidiary in an EU country or a "daughter" association could accept the donations and send them back to the "parent" association. But I am not a specialist in tax law and I am not particularly familiar with the agreements between France or the EU and the USA.

I don't know anything about French tax law, but at least in the U.S. you're not getting any huge benefits from the tax exempt status unless it's a pretty big donation (or a ton of small donations) anyways, I think. Sending $20 USD in support of an organization one time or something won't be a big enough writeoff to matter

The tax reduction is 66% of the amount of the donation. The reduction applies within the limit of 20% of taxable income.

  162. Sam

It's broadly similar in the US with a few caveats
