Doesn't matter if it adds value or not. Here, it's an image which can be recognized by readers

pep., as mastodon does not set alt="" for undescribed pictures (correctly), screenreaders may read stuff like "picture without description", which isn't exactly great

if you wanted to explicitly state "this thing is cosmetics", you'd use different means or alt="", support of which probably varies a lot
