  1. gnemmi

    Hello everyone!

  2. gnemmi

cal0pteryx, so sorry for the delay .. PR has already been created

  3. gnemmi

    https://github.com/xsf/xmpp.org/pull/1499

  4. gnemmi

The Newsletter still needs a paragraph describing the activities that took place at the ### XMPP at FOSDEM 2025

  5. gnemmi

I wasn't there, so I couldn't come up with anything on that regard

  6. gnemmi

Pictures for ### XMPP at FOSDEM 2025 have already been added

  7. gnemmi

It would probably be a good idea to get the consent from the people that appears in the first picture though

  8. gnemmi

In this particular one at least: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/xsf/xmpp.org/0bcf0def5e8d15f75e791ccb1f30e6bc20a4dea2/static/images/newsletter/2025-03-05/xmpp_fosdem_25.jpg

  9. gnemmi

I can see intosi ralphm goffi .. so it would be nice if they could pop up in here and consent to the pic being published on the Newsletter

  10. gnemmi

A simple "I consent" would do

  11. ralphm

Everybody in the picture has given me express permission for it to be used for promotional purposes

    👌 1
  12. gnemmi

Other than that, I removed the link to the Twitter account and fixed all the links to point to their relative paths ( removed the https://xmpp.org part )

  13. gnemmi

ralphm, perfect! Thank you very much for taking the pictures an letting me know that they already gave their consent! 🤗

    👍 1
  14. gnemmi

cal0pteryx, also worth mentionting: I already wiped the pad clean and proceeded to add all the news I could gather so far. So, basically, I also uptaded the pad

  15. gnemmi

    s/uptaded/updated/

  16. cal0pteryx

    gnemmi: great news, thank you!

  17. gnemmi

cal0pteryx, you are very welcome! So sorry for the delay. I had everything already set up to create the PR on time, but .. life gets in the way ..

  18. gnemmi

Also of interest. I've added the "peertube-plugin-livechat" to the pad. I didn't kow about it up until a few weeks ago.

  19. gnemmi

    https://github.com/JohnXLivingston/peertube-plugin-livechat

  20. gnemmi

It relies on the XMPP protocol (also known as Jabber). It is therefore possible to connect to the chats using XMPP client software.

  21. gnemmi

    https://johnxlivingston.github.io/peertube-plugin-livechat/documentation/user/xmpp_clients/index.html

  22. gnemmi

Basically making Peertube the first activitypub app with XMPP support that I know of ... 😁

  23. goffi

gnemmi: it's ok for me, you can publish the photo. Thanks for asking.

  24. gnemmi

goffi, Thank you for your consent to use it !! 🤗

  25. goffi

And I confirm that it was already asked before taking the photo.

    👌 1
  26. goffi

gnemmi: I think that my activitypub <=>XMPP gateway predates the Peertube plugin, but to be fair it's not officially released yet, even if it's in use by few people.

  27. gnemmi

goffi, oh! I didn't know you activitypub <=>XMPP was older!. Please remember to let me know when you make your first official release so I can add it to the pad!.

  28. gnemmi

Also, would you mind sharing the project url so I can keep track of it?

  29. goffi

gnemmi: yeah sure. The release will be huge anyway, I have years of work in it. I'll post everywhere.

  30. gnemmi

    🤣

  31. gnemmi

Hum .. come to think of it .. do you think your activitypub <=>XMPP gateway could be integrated or put to work together with snac ??

  32. gnemmi

That'd be _so_ cool to see ..

  33. goffi

gnemmi: https://libervia.org with the blog at https://libervia.org/news . Best is probably too follow me on ActivityPub (@Goffi@mastodon.social).

  34. gnemmi

Menel, hey! Nice to see you here! What do you think about that??

  35. gnemmi

goffi, perfect! I'm already following all of them! 😂

  36. goffi

The gateway is a server component, it's compatible with the whole existing XMPP ecosystem. For public message, blogging must be supported by client though (private messages are converted to chat).

  37. gnemmi

I'll take a stab at it and as grunfink about that then. I think snac + XMPP would make a killer combo!

  38. gnemmi

    s/as/ask/

  39. Menel

Would be great yeah. But I didn't yet test libervia yet and don't really know how it works. The good thing about snac is, that it supports most (or all?) actions via command line so something can easily glued together

  40. gnemmi

For real though .. snac + XMPP ( for DM ) would be *so* awesome to see ..

  41. goffi

What is snac exactly? I though it was a typo for smack, but apparently it's something else.

  42. gnemmi

goffi, oh, sorry about that! snac is a: A simple, minimalistic ActivityPub instance ( written in portable C, with Mastodon API support, totally JavaScript-free )

  43. gnemmi

    https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2

  44. gnemmi

You can think of it as a really lightweight, no database, no cookies, no JS Mastodon replacement ..

  45. goffi

Ok. Well the AP gateway is following ActivityPub spec. So it should work. If not, report it please 🙂

  46. gnemmi

Alex, just made the announcement, so I just added the Q2 membership application to the pad

    👍 1

  48. singpolyma

For newsletter: there will be an XMPP dedicated track at FOSSY again this year. Please submit talks. Travel bursary may be available from MBOA upon request ,contact singpolyma for details.

  49. singpolyma

May provide my jid for contact singpolyma@singpolyma.net

  50. gnemmi

singpolyma, oh yes, I remember MattJ made the announcement on the XSF muc but the only info available back then was the dates. Will keep an eye on it, looking for XMPP related material!. Thanks for bringing it to this muc!

  51. gnemmi

If any of you guys is giving a talk, please announce it in here if you can and remember to do so, so we don't miss the opportunity to add it to the pad as soon as we can 👍

  52. gnemmi

Also, and I've been thinking about this for a while, now that hook mentioned https://www.euro-stack.info/ ... I've been meaning to ask: why aren't there any XMPP clients listed on https://european-alternatives.eu/ ?

  53. gnemmi

There are at least two categories where XMPP clients and servers could be listed as "european-alternatives" ... but there are none =/

  54. gnemmi

I'd really like to use the Newsletter as a vehicle to let the world know that, both XMPP clients and Servers, are valid "european-alternatives"

  55. gnemmi

Is it just lack of interest?

  56. Kris

That website seems to focus only as commercial providers.

  57. Kris

That website seems to focus only on commercial providers.

  58. gnemmi

And we do have commercial providers 😀

  59. gnemmi

Ugh .. I just realized they delisted Firefox in some point from March 7 to today 👀

  60. gnemmi

    https://web.archive.org/web/20250307160914/https://european-alternatives.eu/category/web-browsers

  61. gnemmi

Im not sure https://european-alternatives.eu/ is only focused on commercial providers ..

  62. gnemmi

Mastodon, Pleroma and Peertube are all listed there

  63. gnemmi

Firefox was listed there too .. at least up until March 7 ...

  64. gnemmi

    yup .. confirmed ...

  65. gnemmi

Kris, "European Alternatives also lists open source projects that can be self-hosted. The criteria just mentioned are not relevant for these projects. However, it should be relatively easy to host the product itself. "

  66. gnemmi

    https://european-alternatives.eu/about

  67. Kris

Is there a similar site? Because just a few days ago I saw one I thought was the same that listed delta chat and snikket.

  68. gnemmi

Not that I know of .. https://european-alternatives.eu/ is the one that's always being shared on Mastodon .. at least to the best of my knowledge

  69. gnemmi

    Kris, maybe this one? https://buy-european.net/alternative-to/whatsapp

  70. Kris

ah, yes that one. almost lookes the same as well

  71. Kris

ah, yes that one. almost looks the same as well

  72. gnemmi

yup .. they look quite similar indeed

  73. Kris

hmm, since when is MattJ based in Sweden? Previously it said UK for Snikket I think.

  74. gnemmi

I was under the impression that: Snikket -> Snikket Community Interest Company (no. 12741702). Manor House Offices, Malvern Road, Worcester WR2 4BS.

  75. Kris

yep, hence me wondering why that site says Sweden now (and I remember it saying UK before)

  76. Menel

I think it always said Sweden since it's listed. It was listed after I mentioned it to the account of that site not long ago. I guess they misunderstood something, who knows.

  77. gnemmi

    Just added to ### New

  78. gnemmi

    - Version 0.1.0 of [XEP-0503](https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0503.html) (Server-side spaces). - Promoted to Experimental (XEP Editor: dg)

  79. cal0pteryx

gnemmi, please let me know as soon as the newsletter PR can be reviewed :)

  80. gnemmi

cal0pteryx, sorry, I should have told you earlier!. The PR is ready for review. It still needs a paragraph on FOSDEM 25 though .. I couldn't come up with anything for it as I wasn't there ( and never have been for that matter ) so I couldn't say a thing about an experience I never had 😬

  81. cal0pteryx

I haven't been this year either. Anybody in this room who went to FOSDEM this year and who would like to drop a sentence about their experience? :)
