Hi, Here is the Italian translation of the latest newsletter: https://notes.nicfab.eu/it/posts/news_xmpp/25/news-xmpp-2025-03/

    🎉️ 2
  2. paulo

gnemmi, may I submmit my pt-br translation via github??

  3. gnemmi

    Hello everybody

  4. gnemmi

Sorry I was available for the weekend

  5. gnemmi

paulo, sure! Just let me see what you got first so I can make sure there are no major issues that need to be ironed out!

    👍 1
  6. gnemmi

badrihippo, glad to have you on board! What is it that you'd like to help with? Drafting the Newsletter, translating, something else?

  7. badrihippo

    > Sorry I was available for the weekend No worries; welcome back!

  8. badrihippo

    > badrihippo, glad to have you on board! What is it that you'd like to help with? Drafting the Newsletter, translating, something else? It'll have to be drafting. Though I can speak a few other languages I'm unfortunately not well versed enough to translate

  9. badrihippo

I see a couple of news items like the Prosody release and some events have already been added for next month's newsletter

  10. gnemmi

Ok!. So .. basically, drafting is just adding news to the pad .. there's no much to it than that ..

  11. badrihippo

...which you get from those Planet feeds as well as general chatter, I'm assuming?

  12. gnemmi

So, yea .. feel free to add news at will .. or, if you are a native english speaker, feel free to help with proof reading and corrections! Those always come in welcome!

  13. badrihippo

Ah yes, English is my "first" language so I can certainly help with that too!

  14. gnemmi

    > ...which you get from those Planet feeds as well as general chatter, I'm assuming? In all honesty, I actually get the news from all sorts of channels .. rss and atom feed, mastodon, other newsletters, projects changelogs ..

  15. badrihippo

    > Ah yes, English is my "first" language so I can certainly help with that too! (Technically not my first but it has become my primary one)

  16. badrihippo

    > In all honesty, I actually get the news from all sorts of channels .. rss and atom feed, mastodon, other newsletters, projects changelogs .. Right...I was just going to ask if you also follow project feeds for releases, since I can see Prosody on the planet feed but not the others

  17. badrihippo

    > In all honesty, I actually get the news from all sorts of channels .. rss and atom feed, mastodon, other newsletters, projects changelogs .. Right...I was just going to ask if you also follow project feeds for releases, since I can see Prosody on the planet feed but not others yet

  18. gnemmi

Well, that's a start .. wouldn't you like to translate to your native language?

  19. gnemmi

    > > In all honesty, I actually get the news from all sorts of channels .. rss and atom feed, mastodon, other newsletters, projects changelogs .. > Right...I was just going to ask if you also follow project feeds for releases, since I can see Prosody on the planet feed but not others yet Yes .. I do .. most of them. 🙂

  20. badrihippo

    > Well, that's a start .. wouldn't you like to translate to your native language? No, those would be Goalpara (a dialect spoken in parts of Assam, India) and Tamil but I'm not proficient in reading/writing either of them. I just barely get by in speaking 😅

  21. gnemmi

    Oh .. ok .. understandable 🙂

  22. badrihippo

I'm one of the people whose parents' "let's focus on them learning English so they get wider opportunities" ended up backfiring on our mother tongues

  23. badrihippo

Okay, let me start adding feeds then

  24. gnemmi

    Yup .. I've seen it happen before .. 😉

  25. badrihippo

    > Okay, let me start adding feeds then If you have an OPML or something that would help? (But otherwise I can start on my own)

  26. gnemmi

I really don't know if it makes much sense for you to start adding feeds and such as I already have that base pretty much covered 🤔

  27. gnemmi

I mean .. I can keep up with that without much problem ..

  28. gnemmi

Regardless .. the answer to your question is no, I don't have an OPML .. I just have a ton of feeds that I've been piling up along the way as projects ( clients, servers, libs, tools ) come and go.

  29. badrihippo

Hmm okay, maybe I'll just keep an eye out and add whatever other news I notice then

  30. badrihippo

I do follow some handles on the Fediverse as well people who boost XMPP related stuff

  31. gnemmi

Well .. there is that too. If you have a fedi account, *please* always like and boost. And ask your friends and acquaintances to like and boost too! It's super importan!

  32. gnemmi

badrihippo, have you worked on videos?

  33. badrihippo

You mean for the newsletter? Or any XMPP related post in general

  34. gnemmi

    Anything at all

  35. badrihippo

And yep, I usually do boost (both) those anyway, but glad to know it's that helpful 🙂

  36. badrihippo

    No, not really 😕

  37. badrihippo

    I can do illustrations/graphics though

  38. gnemmi

Ok .. good to know!. I'm sure it will come in handy!

  39. gnemmi

    Linux user? Krita? Inkscape? Gimp?

  40. badrihippo

    Yep, all three 🙂

  41. badrihippo

And pencil and paper as well

  42. gnemmi

Perfect!!. That *will* come in handy ;)

  43. badrihippo

I did the graphics for PravConf which happened last month...wait let me try to find them

  44. gnemmi

Oh yeah! I followed it on the fedi!

  45. gnemmi

Quite a nice event you guys put over there! 👍

  46. gnemmi

With the soap and everything 😄

  47. badrihippo

Thanks, yeah it was cool that we managed to pull it off 😀

  48. gnemmi

Well .. there you ... you can keep us posted on how things are going with the Prav project!

  49. badrihippo

Xampu! We're putting that up at a few other conferences too now (where Prav has set up a stall)

  50. paulo

    > paulo, sure! Just let me see what you got first so I can make sure there are no major issues that need to be ironed out! 👍

  51. gnemmi

If you guys come up with any news, feel free to add them to the pad!

  52. gnemmi

Chances are you'll know sooner that anyone else!

  53. badrihippo

Haha yes I just realised 😅️

  54. badrihippo

    Will do!

  55. gnemmi

    👍

  56. badrihippo

    > I did the graphics for PravConf which happened last month...wait let me try to find them By the way the profile isn't loading for me right now but I'm guessing you've seen them: the purple ones in here basically https://codeberg.org/prav/prav-assets/src/branch/main/PravConf/2025

  57. gnemmi

So. Can I count on you to keep the news up on everything Prav on the pad?

  58. badrihippo

Yep 👍🏾 I'm sure all the Prav people will also remind me if I forget!

  59. gnemmi

Perfect!! We just found you the best way to contribute to the Newsletter!!

    🎉️ 1
  60. gnemmi

    😀

  61. badrihippo

Speaking of which, I just realised PravConf didn't make it onto the newsletter whoops 🤐

  62. badrihippo

But it shall be there next time 😉

  63. gnemmi

I remember posting about Prav a while ago .. maybe PravConf went under the radar 🤔

  64. badrihippo

    Hmm

  65. gnemmi

  66. badrihippo

Oh, so it *did* make it!

  67. gnemmi

PravConf 2025 : PravConf 2025 is the first edition of the annual gathering of the Prav community, and it will be held on March 1, 2025, at the Model Engineering College, in Kochi. Feel free to Join the group to learn more!

  68. badrihippo forgot that we had started planning so early 😅

  69. gnemmi

    > Oh, so it *did* make it! Yes you did .. and so did I 😉

  70. badrihippo

    > badrihippo, have you worked on videos? By the way, why did you ask about videos?

  71. gnemmi

Go to know it didn't scape me 😉

    🙌🏽️ 1
  72. gnemmi

Because I've been having this idea going around my head for quite a while now .. and ... well .. it would be nice to know people who likes to work their way doing videos ..

  75. edhelas

    Here we go ;)

  76. gnemmi

edhelas, oh! I added the Movim 0.30 to the pad yesterday!

  77. gnemmi

    - [Movim](https://movim.eu/) has released version [0.30](https://github.com/movim/movim/releases/tag/v0.30) (code named "[Encke](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_Encke)"), the biggest evolution in Movim for many years! This release brings [multi-participant calls](https://movim.eu/#visio), reactions are now displayed in the detailed message view, support for Unicode 15.1 with plenty of new emojis to use, avatar change on contacts new [story](https://movim.eu/#stories), and so much more! Make sure to check out the official announcement at the [Movim Blog](https://mov.im/community/pubsub.movim.eu/Movim/good-news-everyone-movim-0-30-encke-is-there-xMvYPr) for all the details.

  78. gnemmi

... and the pictures, of course! 😀

  79. edhelas

Well your version is better, you can replace mine with yours :)

  80. gnemmi

Thank you!! But you want to add it to the March Newsletter?

  81. edhelas

    Oops, no april sounds fine

  82. gnemmi

Well, I had already made sure Movim was already on the pad for the April Newsletter!! 🥳🎉

  83. edhelas

    All right then 👌 ✨

  84. gnemmi

    🤗🤗🤗

  85. badrihippo

    > Because I've been having this idea going around my head for quite a while now .. and ... well .. it would be nice to know people who likes to work their way doing videos .. Somewhat related to this, I've been thinking of ideas for XMPP "ads" similar to the Tamil ads that come on TV for various products

  86. badrihippo

Like this very over-the-top one about "my sambandhi (in-laws) are not eating", but then when they cook with the various podi's (powders/seasonings) made by Tanjara (the brand) they start eating again: https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=CXxzi7yDe6c

  87. badrihippo

Or this for a hotel booking app (Hindi, not Tamil, but in a similar style + it has subtitles): https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=YrrI2e8UDug

  88. badrihippo

I have a friend who's trying to establish herself as a freelance filmmaker. Not into XMPP or anything, but if I manage to get funds from Prav maybe we could collaborate and bring out a few videos

  89. badrihippo

For XMPP we could focus on different aspects like maybe two people having different app preferences, or something that came up today that XMPP was working on an underground subway (via 4G mobile data) even when HTTP requests started timing out

  90. badrihippo

    > So. Can I count on you to keep the news up on everything Prav on the pad? By the way, besides Prav there are a few other projects in India like Durare and Poddery. They are mostly about hosting servers, but if there are any other interesting developments there I can let you know

  91. badrihippo

Basically, I think I can update the newsletter with anything XMPP-related happening in India 🙂

  92. gnemmi

    > Basically, I think I can update the newsletter with anything XMPP-related happening in India 🙂 Exactly. That would be really useful 😉

  93. gnemmi

    > Somewhat related to this, I've been thinking of ideas for XMPP "ads" similar to the Tamil ads that come on TV for various products I wasn't thinking on advertising. I was thinking on educational/introductory videos. Take Prav for instance .. chances are that it isn't a pretty well know app outside of India. So I was thinking about videos that could introduce the viewer into the app .. like onboarding, setup, use and so on ..

  94. gnemmi

And the same aplies to every other client, server, lib, tool ..

  95. gnemmi

I keep seeing people complaining about XMPP being difficult, hard to lear, how to use and so forth ... and the fact that the XMPP ecosystem is so diverse maybe doesn't help in that regard ... but that diversity is, at the same time, its own strengh.

  96. gnemmi

We have plenty of clients, which have plenty of users of their own. And I'm pretty positive that, among the users of each client, there are some fine folks that would probably like to, and be good at, creating videos on how to onboard, configure, use ( and abuse ) their client of choice

  97. gnemmi

And the same can be said about the servers .. and libs .. and tools

  98. badrihippo

That's true. I don't watch many videos myself, but I've seen a lot of general "How to do X on Y app" videos which people seem to find useful. Both full tours as well as short videos dedicated to specific tasks

  99. gnemmi

Schimon, did exactly that with Blasta for instance ..

  100. gnemmi

    > That's true. I don't watch many videos myself, but I've seen a lot of general "How to do X on Y app" videos which people seem to find useful. Both full tours as well as short videos dedicated to specific tasks Case in point!

  101. gnemmi

You don't watch videos because "you already know"!

  102. badrihippo

    This one? https://video.xmpp-it.net/w/cfozoUeVLFbBFMCCSCJ1Dn

  103. gnemmi

But I'm thinking about those who don't!

  104. edhelas

"This XMPP tutorial is brought to you by Audible, you can find the complete series of XEP read by their author for free if you use this code XEPAUTH25"

  105. Schimon

    > This one? https://video.xmpp-it.net/w/cfozoUeVLFbBFMCCSCJ1Dn badrihippo. Yes. See also https://blasta.woodpeckersnest.eu/help/about/ideas

  106. badrihippo

    > But I'm thinking about those who don't! I mean, also because I'm more of a "read the book/docs" person but yes 🙂

  107. gnemmi

Those are the ones that need the accessability that only a video can grant them

  108. Schimon

edhelas. Did you receive my private email?

  109. gnemmi

They won't sit down and do the reading ..

  110. badrihippo

I think there are more video people than books/docs people nowadays

  111. gnemmi

    > I think there are more video people than books/docs people nowadays I have that as a fact

    👍🏽️ 1
  112. gnemmi

The newer generations don't read anymore .. as much as they don't use IRC or Telnet or plenty of other things anymore

  113. gnemmi

And they are exactly the kind of target I keep thinking on: those that still haven't onboarded

  114. badrihippo

    > The newer generations don't read anymore .. as much as they don't use IRC or Telnet or plenty of other things anymore Yep, I just realised they use TikTok or YouTube...which is again videos!

  115. gnemmi

    > "This XMPP tutorial is brought to you by Audible, you can find the complete series of XEP read by their author for free if you use this code XEPAUTH25" But what about the kid that just got into programming and is sitting in front of an XEP and can't tell tails or heads about it? Wouldn't a short video on how to do a simple implementation open a whole new path for him?

  116. gnemmi

Still .. that's a complex case. There is a lot of use for that, but that's a marginal case.

  117. badrihippo

    > I wasn't thinking on advertising. I was thinking on educational/introductory videos. Take Prav for instance .. chances are that it isn't a pretty well know app outside of India. So I was thinking about videos that could introduce the viewer into the app .. like onboarding, setup, use and so on .. By the way, regarding this, I wasn't thinking of literally advertising (eg. putting it on TV) but I think there's a place for this style of video too because it's very catchy and can help create the initial interest

  118. badrihippo

(In addition to the more informative videos of course)

  119. badrihippo

I'm thinking of them as conversation starters, so I could have them on my phone to show to someone or insert in the middle of a presentation (or maybe even a longer explanatory video)

  120. badrihippo

I'm thinking of them as conversation starters, so I could have them on my phone to show to someone or insert in the middle of a presentation (or maybe even include in the middle of a longer explanatory video)

  121. gnemmi

Now, what about a video "showing" you future users how to onboard, configure, use ( and in Movim's case: how to install, configure and get up) Movim?. Of course nobody can cover that in "one" video. But nobody has to!. It could be very well a broken down series of videos on how to do all that.

  122. gnemmi

Would that help a lot better than just text that those who are not onboard will not read anyway?

  123. badrihippo

    > Now, what about a video "showing" you future users how to onboard, configure, use ( and in Movim's case: how to install, configure and get up) Movim?. Of course nobody can cover that in "one" video. But nobody has to!. It could be very well a broken down series of videos on how to do all that. I can also see this being helpful for people who maybe skim the docs and get part of the way but then get stuck at some specific point

  124. badrihippo

Then they can go to the video relevant to that part (if it's a video series)

  125. gnemmi

    > I can also see this being helpful for people who maybe skim the docs and get part of the way but then get stuck at some specific point You are getting the point!

  126. badrihippo

I think there's a whole spectrum, from people who're just scrolling (where the lighter/catchier videos would help, and that's what I was initially thinking of) to those who're somewhat interested (so, they'd see comparisons of various software or maybe reviews of what each can do) and then those who are actually digging deep (who would want more instructional content on how to set things up and configure them, etc.)

  127. badrihippo

So ideally we need videos to cover that entire range!

  128. badrihippo

So ideally we need different kinds of videos to cover that entire range!

  129. badrihippo

By the way, I think I can find people to make a few how-to videos at least for Prav. Starting with the signup process, and one common question which is how to handle the "1 of 1 account connected" foreground notification

  130. gnemmi

    > badrihippo. Yes. See also https://blasta.woodpeckersnest.eu/help/about/ideas This pretty much sums it up. Even if a user knows Blasta, wouldn't a series of videos expleaining how to use it for all the ends described on that page put us a lot closer to the end users? Make things easier for those that still don't user nor understand XMPP?

  131. gnemmi

    > By the way, I think I can find people to make a few how-to videos at least for Prav. Starting with the signup process, and one common question which is how to handle the "1 of 1 account connected" foreground notification That would be perfect! And I'm pretty confident that we could find people out there that can do the same with about every other client, server, lib, tool available.

  132. gnemmi

I mean .. we are part of the Comm team. Aren't this kind of ideas and initiatives supposed to come from us after all?

  133. badrihippo

Makes sense...I was just thinking, there's a reason this group isn't just named "Newsletter Team" 😅

  134. gnemmi

It's all part of communication. Trying to reach out to those who still don't get the message.

  135. badrihippo

Makes sense. That's what we're trying to do at Prav too: spend at least as much effort on spreading the word as on the actual development. Since unfortunately just having options existing doesn't mean people will know about them!

    👍 1
  136. badrihippo

Maybe we can try making a "how to make screencasts" video (or finding a good existing one) and then share that with various XMPP projects

  137. badrihippo

If we find a few people willing to help others figure out the video editing process, that would be even better

  138. gnemmi

    Just added to the pad:

  139. gnemmi

    - [Conversations](https://conversations.im/) has released version [2.18.0](https://codeberg.org/iNPUTmice/Conversations/releases/tag/2.18.0) for Android.

  140. gnemmi

    > Maybe we can try making a "how to make screencasts" video (or finding a good existing one) and then share that with various XMPP projects There's quite a lot of information about how to make a screencast

  141. gnemmi

Schimon, got it right, right out of the bat

  142. Schimon

gnemmi. Thank you. I still have things to improve and fix. I also intend to set the same node of Libervia and Movim, which would allow to interoperate together. gemini://woodpeckersnest.space/~schapps/journal/2025-01-06-blasta-libervia-and-movim.gmi

I really think you did set up an excellent example on how to make good use of videos as an instructional resourse available for the XMPP community!!

  144. Schimon

Thank you. I appreciate your feedback.
