its a nice article, but in that context recommending Matrix is a bit odd. Due to the database replication it does, basically all the metadata ends up centralized on matrix.org.

it has other qualities, but in this specific topic it really isn't much better than WhatsApp. ✏

imo it might be worth mentioning about the relevant "careless whisper" attack, and that both protocols allow some ways to maintain control of presence metadata too

free yes, but you need to get approved.

I had a conversations account so I went with that one and also got a chalec ( after reading about it on what neox wrote for the newsletter ang getting interested about the whole project ) to try it out .. I've got to say that I'm pretty pleased so far! It even has Dane support!

Involved folks, I recommend to prepare some toots for events like this, then we can push it through our channels: XMPP at RHL26: this french-speaking event for software freedom will take place during January 23-27 in Switzerland and will welcome two conferences about XMPP. Codimp will host the 'XMPP ou comment ne pas réinventer la roue : messagerie fédérée et sécurisée en 2026' presentation about the improvements to the protocol, servers and clients in last five years, while neox will host the 'L'hébergement éthique comme Commun' presentation about how the Libre en Communs non-profit built its own infrastructure as a common around fully free software and compatible hardware in order to hosts projects and in particular a public XMPP service, being the communication core to manage this together.
