  1. debacle

Dears, I'm going to print hexstickers about Jabber/XMPP. Do you have any nice motives? I think about "Jabber — fediverse of chat since 1999" and "Use Jabber — Do Crime" (a pun on the German federal crimiinal police BKA), but I'm open to better ideas.

  2. debacle

Btw. I will do hexstickers in English and in Spanish, maybe also German or Portuguese.

I do not like the 'do crime' variant, as that is likely to be misunderstood by a lot of people.

Please focus on positive capabilities. Here are a lot suitable statements: https://pad.nixnet.services/yILbeWY0TkipOai2Aojt2A?view

    > I do not like the 'do crime' variant, as that is likely to be misunderstood by a lot of people. That's always a problem with jokes. Some do understand them, some do not. I'll not stop joking, though. Btw. we are all criminals. At some place, in some time.

    > Please focus on positive capabilities. > > Here are a lot suitable statements: https://pad.nixnet.services/yILbeWY0TkipOai2Aojt2A?view I like most of the statements, esp. because they focus on positive features, but there are few, that make a cool, short slogan for a 5 cm hexsticker. Many of them are a little bit to "technical" for my taste. Do you have any specific one in mind? One that you (or others here) would like to see on a sticker?

  7. debacle would not use the term "XMPP" on a sticker, btw. It's like calling email "SMTP". Too geeky, IMHO.

promote individual apps instead of protocols then. The Snikket way.

  10. debacle

    > promote individual apps instead of protocols then. The Snikket way. Which one? I'm going to distribute them both at upcoming DebConf (i.e. should be a client in Debian such as Gajim or Dino) and at a kind of crypto party, where most people use Android. Maybe two different stickers then?

I meant you can take inspiration from this.

  12. hueso

yay see you @ debconf then!

  13. hueso

imho the lack of a pronouncable name really hinders adoption

  14. hueso

coincidentally I was just asked a few moments ago: "oh you don't use whatsapp, what do you use?" and after a moment of doubt I said XMPP and I could see the face of confusion in the person's face, which does not promote the urge to look it up like it would if it were a more a catchy name

  15. hueso

    fuck Cisco

  16. MattJ

Tell them what you use. I don't tell people I use SMTP...

  17. hueso

sometimes I say "Conversations" but often they would use an iFruit device

  18. MattJ

    Yeah, that is unfortunate

  19. MattJ

I've had people try to search for Conversations on the Apple store before

  20. MattJ

But the people who search XMPP don't tend to succeed much either

  21. hueso

or even look it up in google store and dismiss it as paid

  22. MattJ

and I don't think that part would be better if it was called "Jabber", because there wouldn't be a Jabber app

    👍 1
  23. MattJ

They'll just think the app isn't there

  24. hueso

I think there's value in the Snikket initiative

  25. hueso

I guess many client options would show up in a search for "jabber" just like they do when searching "xmpp" @ fdroid

  26. hueso

likewise a search for "email" would show up many email clients. although plagued with shitware of course as is the case with those app "stores"

  27. MattJ

You'd be surprised, most people don't know they can choose what email app they use

    💩 2🥲 1
  28. Trung

    modern slavery and all that

  29. debacle

    > or even look it up in google store and dismiss it as paid That's why Conversation has, idk. 100 k downloads and Delta has 1 M. The latter is free as in beer.

  30. debacle

MattJ: can you make me owner of this muc temporarily?
