    >> or even look it up in google store and dismiss it as paid > That's why Conversation has, idk. 100 k downloads and Delta has 1 M. The latter is free as in beer. Perhaps Conversations just needs some Crowdfunding to then be free on Play Store for a longer time. I've had that thought for a while now... Like... Funding to make it free for a year or something like that. It having a price tag surely costs some momentum with all the digital independence initiatives.

    > (I moderated one image) What was in there that you had to remove it? o.O

  3. singpolyma

People pay for apps all the time. 1M downloads doesn't mean 1M users

  4. debacle

    > What was in there that you had to remove it? o.O It was a sticker design by me. More a pun on the German BKA, kind of joke, but I completely understand, that it is not everyones taste, so I'll not post it, again. If you come to the Berlin sprint, you can get the *real* sticker, though.

  5. debacle

    > People pay for apps all the time. 1M downloads doesn't mean 1M users That's true, but I'm going to have a "indi day / crypto party" kind of event soon, and I already fear, that many people will not download Conversations from Google because of the price tag. After all, they only want to try the app and maybe never use it again. I'm willing to pay the app for everyone at the event (10..20 people, I assume), but that does not solve the problem in general.

    > That's why Conversation has, idk. 100 k downloads and Delta has 1 M. The latter is free as in beer. Right, but..if you install it from F-Droid, it's both free as in freedom and free as in beer. If people are looking for free as in freedom applications on a store that is free as in zilch, then....not sure if it's a Conversations problem.

  10. Link Mauve

neox, you can also mention xmpp.rs perhaps.

Hmm, yeah. Such cases are interesting. Google doesn't have a "free trial" thing with play store really. One could fake it with IAP I suppose

  14. badrihippo

Is there some way to buy an app "for" someone else? That might work actually, at least in cases where one person is willing to foot the bill (or contribute financially to Conversations, however you want to look at it)

  15. hueso

installing F-Droid is a beneficial side quest

Most people will just look at it because I tell them "Try it", the price tag does not help getting people on board. They're not going to pay five euros because I ask them to.

"What is F-Droid?" *gives a lecture on software freedom and why F-Droid is good* Friend understands the importance of freedom, installs F-Droid and then Conversations. Now they might look for apps first in F-Droid. Win-win.

erebion, divya: why are you guys talking about as if Quickys didn't exist as an entry level xmpp app for Android and iOS?

  27. erebion

    > erebion, divya: why are you guys talking about as if Quickys didn't exist as an entry level xmpp app for Android and iOS? I didn't talk about Quicksy as I was talking about Conversations.

  28. gnemmi

That's a basic. Try Quicksy. Like what you see? Like what you get? Pay 5 an upgrade to Conversations/Monocle/Cheogram

  29. singpolyma

Sort of except that upgrade path would involved making a new address?

  30. gnemmi

erebion: and that's exactly why I brought Quicksy to the table!. As a Conversations fork, it makes and absolutely perfect entry level client to XMPP

  31. gnemmi

singpolyma: indeed .. but if you liked what you saw .. creating a new account is a lot lower level than getting someone who doesn't know xmpp to shell out 5 for an app that provides a services that the users doesn't even know if he needs or wants at all ..

  32. gnemmi

At least that's my humble opinion and take on it

  33. erebion

    > That's a basic. Try Quicksy. Like what you see? Like what you get? Pay 5 an upgrade to Conversations/Monocle/Cheogram Quicksy is need. I just wonder what happens when someone moves to a new device and registers again. Is it a new account? Reverse... What if someone registers again with the same number when the number gets reallocated again? Do they get the account? Do the contacts get any indication that the owner of the phone number changed? The Quicksy website doesn't comment on that at all.

  34. gnemmi

Probably because Quicksy was never meant to be used for good but just as an entry level option?.

  35. gnemmi

Anyways, if you register again with a new number not much I'd gonna change since Quickly used your phone book to keep track of your contacts ..

  36. gnemmi

  37. erebion

I know that a new number will lead to a new account. That's not what I'm wondering about.
