XMPP Council - 2010-04-26

  1. Kev set the topic to

    XMPP Council Room | http://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Radar

  2. Kev

    Right.

  3. Kev

We are in need of more people.

  4. Fritzy

    Indeed.

  5. Kev

Remko and Matt poked, Ralph's not online.

  6. Kev

    Both seem to be AFK.

  7. Fritzy

how long do you want to give them?

  8. Tobias

once upon a time there have been calendar entries for council meetings *nitpick*

  9. stpeter recommends getting rid of the sham democracy in the form of the Council and starting a new benevolent dictatorship under his sole and complete control

  10. Kev

    Tobias: remind Matt :)

  11. Kev

    Fritzy: 10 minutes or so.

  12. Kev

Unless you're only at your PC because of Council, in which case we could make that 5.

  13. Kev

Oh, yes, I can talk to the registrar while we wait.

  14. Fritzy

nope, have to be here anyway

  15. Kev

stpeter: I think we need a 'stuff that was previously registered' to go with the current namespace registry.

  16. Kev

Or a 'stuff that was previously in experimental XEPs' rather.

  17. stpeter

    hmmmmm

  18. Kev

I spent far too long the other day working out why some clients were using a non-standard namespace, before I found out it's what was used in a previous version of the XEP.

  19. stpeter

isn't that called "the trash bin"?

  20. stpeter

well I suppose you folks across the pond say "rubbish"

  21. stpeter

    but it's the same idea

  22. Kev

It's ok, I can translate to "the trash rubbish" in my head :)

  23. Fritzy

    blimey

  24. stpeter

it seems problematic for the registrar to maintain a registry of unregistered namespaces

  25. stpeter

unless we'd like a "formerly known as" column in the table

  26. Kev

Well, in theory we shouldn't get 'formerly known as' any more.

  27. Kev

Because we've got the cunning :0 :1 stuff for that.

  28. Kev

Unless we decide to change the namespace instead of versioning it.

  29. stpeter

    sure

  30. stpeter

    you're talking about pre-cunning namespaces

  31. Kev

    I am.

  32. Kev

I guess it's not practical to go through and work out what they all were.

  33. stpeter

    I'd prefer not to :)

  34. Kev

Ok, that's 10 minutes up. Meeting aborted. Thanks guys.

  35. Fritzy

    ciao

  36. stpeter

    so next week

  37. stpeter

    and calendar

  38. stpeter

    ?

  39. stpeter

happy to create that calendar item right now

  40. darkrain

Kev: Out of curiosity, was that with the User Avatar spec? :)

  41. Fritzy

stpeter: can I get access to JIRA?

  42. Kev

Next week, yes, Matt usually does the calendar, but you're welcome to :)

  43. Kev

darkrain: I don't remember, which I find quite distressing.

  44. stpeter

    Fritzy: Jira or SVN?

  45. Fritzy

    I've got SVN working.

  46. stpeter

    isn't Jira shut down?

  47. stpeter

    pending security concerns?

  48. Fritzy

    ah, ok

  49. Tobias

i've talked to bear, he wanted to take care of jira tonight

  50. Fritzy

are we using anything for tracking then?

  51. Kev

I killed Jira because I was busy, and didn't have time to work out the right thing to do.

  52. Tobias

take care in the meaning of bringing it back, not killing it completely :D

  53. Kev

Bear said there wasn't a vulnerability unless you were also running Apache, so it's probably fine to just upgrade and bring back.

  54. Kev

If Bear's on that, great :)

  55. Kev

He won't be getting any less busy when the GSoC slots are announced in 50 minutes, though :)

  56. Kev

    Anyway, I'm AFK now.

  57. Kev

    darkrain: it was xep-154

  58. stpeter

    heh

  59. stpeter

    calendar updated

  60. Kev

    Thanks.

  61. stpeter wanders off to heat up some lunch

  62. bear

yes, i'm on jira - was in toronto and that kept me offline a lot more than I wanted (via bad VPN and also work schedule)

  63. bear

sorry I missed meeting (even if i would just be lurking)

  64. stpeter

bear: no worries, meeting postponed for lack of a quorum anyway

  65. MattJ frowns

  66. MattJ

    Did the meeting time change?

  67. stpeter wonders if the lack of a calendar entry has caused scheduling confusion

  68. stpeter

Kev seems to have thought it was 18:00 UTC

  69. MattJ

    I thought it was 19:00 :/

  70. Tobias

without a calendar entry, how could you know :P

  71. stpeter

yeah so did I, until I poked him via IM

  72. stpeter

    Tobias: exactly

  73. Kev

    It's always 7pm UK time.

  74. stpeter prefers UTC

  75. stpeter

I have no idea what UK time is :)

  76. MattJ

    UTC+1

  77. stpeter

    sometimes

  78. stpeter

    other times not

  79. Tobias

first they drive on the wrong side, and then they can't get the times right *joking* ;)

  80. bear chuckles

  81. MattJ

What's an hour between council members? :)

  82. stpeter

well, I don't even speak English so what would I know?

  83. stpeter

Fritzy: are you still -1 on XEP-0060?

  84. stpeter pokes Remko for good measure

  85. Fritzy

    stpeter: I'm a +1. Thought I made that clear. I'll re-iterate on the list.

  86. stpeter

Fritzy: I think I neglected to update the tallies page

  87. Tobias

stpeter: btw: have you had time to review my changes on xep-0143?

  88. stpeter

Fritzy: and as soon as 1.13 is published we can start working on 1.14 :)

  89. Fritzy

    w00t

  90. bear

when do I need to poke the board about GSoC student book purchases?

  91. Tobias

yay...got accepted for GSoC, thanks to all who voted for me, and damn you who didn't ;)

  92. stpeter

Tobias: yeah I haven't looked at those in a while, will add to my list

  93. Tobias doesn't want to imagine the length of that list

  94. Tobias

    :)

  95. stpeter

Tobias: it's fine to make the list shorter :P

  96. stpeter

bear: in the past I bought the books (we've done that only once, IIRC)

  97. bear

I think it would be really helpful to purchase the two newer books

  98. bear

ok, google has updated the GSoC list of accepted projects

  99. bear goes to make a blog post draft

  100. stpeter

we need to decide which books

  101. bear

the new guide to jabber is a must IMO - a nice to have would be the javascript one - those are my two suggestions

  102. stpeter

last time we did non-XMPP books

  103. bear

    oh

  104. stpeter

"Getting Things Done" and "Pragmatic Programmer" I think

  105. Kev

    Sorry, I'm not really here.

  106. stpeter

    Kev: 'sok

  107. Kev

I don't think we've got any javascript projects, so getting the Strophe book seems a bit daft.

  108. Kev

I'd go with XMPP: TDG, Pragmatic, and GTD.

  109. bear

    k

  110. Tobias

do you know how the SoC web app shows a student whether he/she has been accepted or not?

  111. bear

ok, review post is up - please poke holes in it

  112. stpeter

    bear: thanks

  113. bear

it doesn't just yet - you get an email

  114. bear

all I see is that the list of proposals is now "accepted" or "rejected"

  115. Tobias

ahh..seems you get a new link at the left with List my Student Projects

  116. Tobias

their UI could need plenty of improvement

  117. bear

IIRC I think that was a GSoC project that didn't make it ;)

  118. Tobias

bear: yeah, it looks that way :)

  119. stpeter

bear: perhaps we can provide a brief description of each project?

  120. Kev

We're not allowed to announce until CS says so - has she?

  121. bear

I was thinking of introducting them after they students have been formally processed

  122. bear

they have to accept the acceptance and all that

  123. stpeter

    see for instance http://blog.xmpp.org/index.php/2007/04/summer-of-code-projects/

  124. stpeter

    ah

  125. stpeter

    sure

  126. stpeter

"sorry, we have not yet accepted your acceptance of the acceptance"

  127. bear

but I opened that in a tab for later ;)

  128. stpeter

    brb

  129. stpeter

    :)

  130. bear

wow - the more I do with GSoC the more I see that needs to be done. I have no idea how you managed to do this solo in the past!

  131. bear hugs stpeter

  132. Kev

I'll be back at my keyboard a bit later. Do feeel free to poke me to do stuff.

  133. bear

kev - oh - no worries - i'm just catching up while waiting for a work meeting to start

  134. bear

we can meet later during your free time for sure
