XMPP Council - 2018-06-27

  1. Ge0rG

    Is it that time again?

  2. Kev

    It is.

  3. Kev

I don't think we have either an Agenda or a Dave, having just seen his message to standards@

  4. Kev

So I guess it'll be short

  5. Kev

    1) Baps

  6. Kev

    I'm here

  7. daniel

    hi

  8. Ge0rG

    πŸ™ŠπŸ™‰πŸ™ˆ

  9. Kev

    Well, that's quorum.

  10. Kev

    2) Agenda bashing

  11. Ge0rG

    Something something compression

  12. Ge0rG

    Something something compression

  13. Kev

That's quite eloquent, but would you like to TL;DR?

  14. Ge0rG

I think we need to revise the exact reasons for why Stream Compression is considered insecure and how to make it great again, then fix the XEP.

  15. Kev

Is that a Council voting item?

  16. Ge0rG

LZW is due for deprecation because of lack of security in compression

  17. Ge0rG

Or were there additional reasons against LZW specifically?

  18. daniel

    no i don’t think so

  19. Kev

Only that it's probably unused so we can deprecate that one more easily and make *some* progress.

  20. Ge0rG

Why did we have LZW in the first place? Better compression ratio?

  21. Ge0rG

Maybe we should add lzma or brotli then?

  22. Zash

    zstandard?

  23. Kev

Ge0rG: What is your specific Council voting action here?

  24. Ge0rG

Kev: I'm looking for the reasons behind the currently pending vote

  25. Kev

If it's whether to deprecate or not, we did that last week and decided not to, but could do so again.

  26. Ge0rG

    Kev: I missed last week.

  27. Kev

Tedd replied on list with the reasons he put the vote in the agenda.

  28. Ge0rG

    Yes. I've read those.

  29. Ge0rG

I even vaguely remembered the initial call for feedback discussion, and that we considered all compression as flawed

  30. Ge0rG

But then there's some discussion on standards about how useful compression is to have, so maybe we need to actually address the security issues. And then maybe LZW doesn't need to be killed?

  31. Ge0rG

Which is why I'm asking all these questions now.

  32. SamWhited

    Sorry, I'm here now too.

  33. Kev

I think this is roughly repeating what we said last week, which was that compression is useful and we should fix it.

  34. Kev

But I don't think 'fixing it' is a Council voting item.

  35. Kev

    Hi Sam.

  36. Ge0rG

Kev: under this premise, does it still make sense to get rid of LZW?

  37. Kev

    Probably not.

  38. Ge0rG

Is LZW a widely deployed compression method on the Jabber network?

  39. Kev

    NAFAIK

  40. Zash

Mebbe CFE it? // the floor

  41. Ge0rG

Now I actually don't remember what we decided last time.

  42. Ge0rG

    Did we CFE?

  43. Kev

I think we should (not now) go ahead and fix compression, and then reconsider what to do about this.

  44. Kev

Which is the same thing I thought last week.

  45. Ge0rG

    Great, let's do that.

  46. Ge0rG

So I vote not to change anything right now.

  47. Kev

Excellent, so that's nothing on the agenda then.

  48. Kev

    3) Date of next SBTSBC and Dave should be here next week?

  49. SamWhited

    WFM

  50. Ge0rG

As good as this week for me.

  51. daniel

i might be on a train or tram or something. but i'll try to make

  52. Kev

    4) AOB?

  53. Ge0rG

    Pending votes?

  54. Kev

You can give pending votes here if you want, or just on-list them.

  55. Ge0rG

I might miss the two week deadline, by a short margin.

  56. Ge0rG

But yes, on list is more practical

  57. Kev

I think we're done then unless anyone shouts imminently?

  58. Ge0rG

    πŸ™Š

  59. Kev

    Right, thanks all.

  60. Kev ganbs the vagel

  61. Ge0rG

But please don't bagg the navel.
