Hi, just having a thought: Would it be of interest to scope XEP development for programs like GSoC?

  2. moparisthebest

I don't think so, XEPs shouldn't be encouraged or whatever, they should solve real world problems people have

  3. emus

yes, but maybe we have real problems that have not been solved and intend to get something for a while?

  4. singpolyma

    > Hi, > > just having a thought: Would it be of interest to scope XEP development for programs like GSoC? Better would be prototypes of XEPs that have never been implemented or prototypes of things people think they might need a xep for

  5. emus

Happy to list this if people are interested

  6. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

prototype of spaces as an idea :)

  7. moparisthebest

But that's a use case for projects no? That's where implementations go

  8. daniel

When we did omemo the reference implementation / prototype was the Google summer of code project. And after the project the same student (with the mentors help) wrote the xep

  9. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

yeah i was saying as an implementation

  10. emus

If its meaningful I can also write another mail to members formulating to re-think such an idea. Happy for input and formulation help

  11. singpolyma

    > When we did omemo the reference implementation / prototype was the Google summer of code project. And after the project the same student (with the mentors help) wrote the xep This might be the only GSoC success story I'm aware of, heh

  12. emus

    > 2. GSoC 2024 is looking to have more AI/ML orgs involved this year so please encourage open source AI/ML projects that you think are doing cool things to apply for GSoC 2024 (and they can use you as a reference). > On this same note, if your org has AI/ML projects be sure to select Artificial Intelligence as one of your Categories (you can select 2). You also will likely want to add that into your 'Topics' tags as well. anything we have in mind in this regard?

  13. moparisthebest

Sure, anyone want to contribute to https://github.com/moparisthebest/ash

Siacs omemo was and continues to be an absolute mess

  15. emus

morapisthebest - if you want to participate we would need the sign up in the wiki

  17. singpolyma

daniel: yes, sure, but a very popular mess

  18. Zash

    popularity ≠ quality

  19. singpolyma

Right but most GSoC stuff gets half done and then languishes on a branch simewhere for a decade. Like all the old GSoC jingle av implementations

  20. Zash

One should be clear about that GSoC is not a way to get stuff done, it's an outreach program, to teach people something about FOSS.

  21. emus

Well, I am not a fan of throwing difficult implementations on GSoC students. If so then lets refuse it unless we have one that can indeed drive it

  22. moparisthebest

While the thought of trolling Google by having them pay to improve AI from 1904 is amusing it's pretty high effort
