what was the idea behinde the show value "xa"

is there any guide, when the elders thought a user wants to set this show value?

compared to normal away

lovetox, in a setting where rich presence is important (e.g. work), I’d set xa when leaving for lunch

while away would be managed by some auto-away-type functionality

pidgin also sets xa after a long time of auto-away

which I don’t necessarily agree with

but to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was simply a copycat move from other messengers from the 90ies era

we can add the idle time to auto-away

and that tells the user how long im gone

but extended away makes a prediction about the future

which the client cant do automatically

also, xa isn’t really good for "how long I will be gone" either -- when a coworker looks at that status, it might be one minute before I return

so why do you set it if you go for lunch :D

it’s probably best combined with a human explanatino in the <status/> field -- I’d for example set my status to "lunch (eta: 13:00)" or something like that

in a client with tight space (e.g. pidgin with narrow roster item view), you only see away vs. xa (colour-coded) unless you hover ✏

so if you see the contact is xa, you know to hover to get info about for how long they’ll be gone

what would you say if i let my users not set xa, and only support away ✏

i also dont see it on other messangers

indeed. rocketchat doesn’t have it either (which is what we use at work), so I set myself to Away + status message.

I have some contacts who got annoyed when I stopped updating my presence.

I miss xa in rocketchat actually, I’d prefer if I could see right away if this is some auto-away or an intentional xa ✏

As in, they didn’t know when I was asleep anymore or having lunch or outside.

that’s multi-line, and I turn that off whereever I can because vertical space is precious

(and I don’t use things which don’t let me turn that off)

then you dont show avatars also i guess

because there will never be a single line avatar

they fit perfectly in a single-line

(rocketchat is a good example there, for once)

of course i can make font-size 20

then font is as big as the avatar

and its single line :D

since when do avatars have a fixed size?

8x8 px avatars are cool :D

single line is not a good metric

We do that in poezio, except they’re 16×16. o/

as you dont control how big a single line is

if you have to map a single color to show

what would XA be

and if you say red, then the next question is, what would DND be

lovetox, I’d have away as something blue-ish and xa as yellow-orange-ish

my argument would be, red means in most messengers, im busy

while XA is a state that only xmpp has

but actually you shouldn’t be using colours only, because that’s not accessible
