  1. lovetox

what was the idea behinde the show value "xa"

  2. lovetox

is there any guide, when the elders thought a user wants to set this show value?

  3. lovetox

    compared to normal away

  4. jonas’

lovetox, in a setting where rich presence is important (e.g. work), I’d set xa when leaving for lunch

  5. jonas’

while away would be managed by some auto-away-type functionality

  6. jonas’

pidgin also sets xa after a long time of auto-away

  7. jonas’

which I don’t necessarily agree with

  8. lovetox

i dont agree on that also

  9. jonas’

but to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was simply a copycat move from other messengers from the 90ies era

  10. lovetox

we can add the idle time to auto-away

  11. lovetox

and that tells the user how long im gone

  12. lovetox

but extended away makes a prediction about the future

  13. lovetox

which the client cant do automatically

  14. jonas’

s/how long im gone/how long I have been gone so far/

  15. lovetox

    yeah sorry

  16. lovetox

    i meant that

  17. jonas’

also, xa isn’t really good for "how long I will be gone" either -- when a coworker looks at that status, it might be one minute before I return

  18. lovetox

so why do you set it if you go for lunch :D

  19. jonas’

it’s probably best combined with a human explanatino in the <status/> field -- I’d for example set my status to "lunch (eta: 13:00)" or something like that

  20. jonas’

    because I do that ^

  21. lovetox

ok but you can also set a status with away

  22. lovetox

    servs the same purpose

  23. jonas’

depends on how it’s displayed really

  24. jonas’

in a client with tight space (e.g. pidgin with narrow roster item view), you only see away vs. xa unless you hover

  25. jonas’

in a client with tight space (e.g. pidgin with narrow roster item view), you only see away vs. xa (colour-coded) unless you hover

  26. lovetox

why would you say if i let my users not set xa, and only support away

  27. jonas’

so if you see the contact is xa, you know to hover to get info about for how long they’ll be gone

  28. lovetox

what would you say if i let my users not set xa, and only support away

  29. lovetox

i also dont see it on other messangers

  30. jonas’

lovetox, not sure. I’m not sure rich presence matters for non-corporate environments, at all.

  31. lovetox

the ususally have DND and Away

  32. jonas’

indeed. rocketchat doesn’t have it either (which is what we use at work), so I set myself to Away + status message.

  33. lovetox

    yeah but im not anti-corporate

  34. Link Mauve

I have some contacts who got annoyed when I stopped updating my presence.

  35. jonas’

I miss XA actually, I’d prefer if I could see right away if this is some auto-away or an intentional xa

  36. jonas’

I miss xa in rocketchat actually, I’d prefer if I could see right away if this is some auto-away or an intentional xa

  37. Link Mauve

As in, they didn’t know when I was asleep anymore or having lunch or outside.

  38. lovetox

    you can jonas Gajim

  39. lovetox

    Gajim adds (Auto-Away)

  40. lovetox

    to the status message

  41. jonas’

lovetox, but that’s not shown in a single line roster entry

  42. jonas’

there I can only see (colour-coded or with icons) away vs. xa

  43. lovetox

    https://share.hoerist.com/philipp/oFB3QDry6WRCBWKm/aa62581d-ce01-478d-aa7d-28fd4bb78bf2.png

  44. lovetox

but yeah not every client does this

  45. lovetox

some dont show it at all

  46. jonas’

that’s multi-line, and I turn that off whereever I can because vertical space is precious

  47. lovetox

    not even color

  48. jonas’

(and I don’t use things which don’t let me turn that off)

  49. lovetox

then you dont show avatars also i guess

  50. lovetox

because there will never be a single line avatar

  51. jonas’

they fit perfectly in a single-line

  52. jonas’

(rocketchat is a good example there, for once)

  53. lovetox

    of course i can make font-size 20

  54. lovetox

then font is as big as the avatar

  55. lovetox

    and its single line :D

  56. jonas’

since when do avatars have a fixed size?

  57. pulkomandy

8x8 px avatars are cool :D

  58. lovetox

single line is not a good metric

  59. Link Mauve

We do that in poezio, except they’re 16×16. o/

  60. lovetox

as you dont control how big a single line is

  61. Link Mauve

    16 characters. :D

  62. jonas’

    https://share.dreckshal.de/dpm/d-EXdargb6K9eGI0uMppveGuDJm8SJdpI6M3N-O0r8U.png looks like this :)

  63. jonas’

    lovetox, oh I do. system-wide fontsize ;)

  64. lovetox

    thats huge font size

  65. jonas’

    that’s highdpi

  66. jonas’

it’s not huge on the real screen :>

  67. lovetox

ok you won, this gets to complicated for me

  68. jonas’

but there’s plenty pixels for an avatar

  69. lovetox

have your single line and be happy :)

  70. jonas’

    thanks :)

  71. lovetox

    ok next question

  72. lovetox

if you have to map a single color to show

  73. lovetox

    what would XA be

  74. lovetox

and if you say red, then the next question is, what would DND be

  75. jonas’

lovetox, I’d have away as something blue-ish and xa as yellow-orange-ish

  76. lovetox

my argument would be, red means in most messengers, im busy

  77. lovetox

while XA is a state that only xmpp has

  78. jonas’

but actually you shouldn’t be using colours only, because that’s not accessible

  79. lovetox

    yeah

  80. lovetox

i agree, but not on my priority list right now

  81. rion

Is there any client implementing omemo >= 0.4.0?

  82. pep.

    clients I don't think so, but https://github.com/dino/libomemo-c

  83. larma

There is a feature branch in Dino: https://github.com/dino/dino/tree/feature/omemo1
