Interesting discussion about libraries. Personally, I've found https://github.com/xmppjs/xmpp.js (NodeJS / JavaScript) to strike a fairly good balance. It lends itself well to be used at different levels of abstraction and with different coding styles. I didn't feel I had to adapt to it, though maybe it's just written in a style that's familiar to me.
