  1. pep.

I just realized, there's no need for a MUC to fill {muc#foo}x/item@jid for MSN sessions right? It's a nice to have but the client can already assume that if a message in a room comes from its own nick, it's probably one of their own devices. The MUC has every interest to check that it's the same account before allowing you to spoof your identity from some place else

  2. pep.

I learned there are ActivityPub relays (or Mastodon relays just?), any clue how they work? Do they just require the relay to agree to share its content, or does the relay actually identify as the relayed instance as well? (which would be xmpp<->xmpp like?)

  3. pep.

Maybe I misunderstood what it's supposed to be

  4. singpolyma

It's like a way to have an instance follow a whole other instance. I don't really understand the purpose

  5. pep.

In the case of single-user instances, it's useful to allow bootstraping / having other sources of information

  6. pep.

    That's the one use-case I've heard of

  7. Menel

But why not just have a dummy account that follows the whole instance instead?

  8. singpolyma

I guess I don't understand this thing where people want to see content from accounts they don't follow

  9. Zash

I assume things like following #tags won't work sensibly without it, otherwise you only see #tagged entries from those you or other local users follow. And that's unreliable as it is on largish instances from what I can tell.

  10. Menel

    singpolyma: hastags

  11. pep.

Menel, a dummy account on said relay?

  12. pep.

I'd say because multi-account is often not really well designed

  13. Menel

On your small instance, have some account you create and let it follow instances. Don't use that account ever after that... But in that way, your real account sees the content in the global timeline

  14. pep.

    You can follow entire instances?

  15. Zash

This "everything replicated everywhere" thing is going too far!!! :P

  16. Menel

    At least Fedilab allows jt

  17. singpolyma

    No kidding

  18. pep.

I think I prefer asking the instance if I can actually replicate its content, rather than just get it because I can.. Also the additional account "that I'm never gonna use" definitely smells of hack :)

  19. pep.

Anyway, I was mostly curious to know how they did it

  20. Menel

Like the proxy but with one involved less?

  21. pep.

    The proxy?

  22. Menel

  23. pep.

Sorry I don't understand your sentence

  24. Menel

With my limited knowledge, it looks for me as if such a relay is a 3rd party but doing the same as if I use a dummy account to follow everyone. https://joinfediverse.wiki/index.php?title=Fediverse_relays&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop So... Isn't that a hack too? Maybe I don't get it.. Didn't invest much time there yey

  25. Menel

  26. pep.

  27. pep.

hmm so there's no need for the relay to advertize your identity or anything, it's really just sending content your way, and you still do everything you do from your own instance

  28. pep.

Unrelated? If I want to "hide" how many XMPP connections I've got and make them all go through one, I don't have a choice but to do XMPP<->XMPP right?
