I just realized, there's no need for a MUC to fill {muc#foo}x/item@jid for MSN sessions right? It's a nice to have but the client can already assume that if a message in a room comes from its own nick, it's probably one of their own devices. The MUC has every interest to check that it's the same account before allowing you to spoof your identity from some place else

I learned there are ActivityPub relays (or Mastodon relays just?), any clue how they work? Do they just require the relay to agree to share its content, or does the relay actually identify as the relayed instance as well? (which would be xmpp<->xmpp like?)

In the case of single-user instances, it's useful to allow bootstraping / having other sources of information

I assume things like following #tags won't work sensibly without it, otherwise you only see #tagged entries from those you or other local users follow. And that's unreliable as it is on largish instances from what I can tell.

I'd say because multi-account is often not really well designed

On your small instance, have some account you create and let it follow instances. Don't use that account ever after that... But in that way, your real account sees the content in the global timeline

I think I prefer asking the instance if I can actually replicate its content, rather than just get it because I can.. Also the additional account "that I'm never gonna use" definitely smells of hack :)

Unrelated? If I want to "hide" how many XMPP connections I've got and make them all go through one, I don't have a choice but to do XMPP<->XMPP right?
