Small UX question, do you think its wise to notify users when a reaction is put on a message she/he published ?

  2. edhelas

I see that Signal is doing that, I fear the notification spam

  3. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

in 1:1 chats, sure. public chats not without a timer at least imo.

    👍️ 1

    and bundling

  5. jonas’

edhelas, MS Teams also does that, it has its advantages and disadvantages

  6. jonas’

in MS Teams, it helps to prevent đź‘Ť replies cluttering the history, because people know that a reaction will ping the author of a message.

  7. jonas’

that makes reactions usable for explicit acknowledgements (e.g. of plans or so)

  8. jonas’

rocket.chat, on the other hand, does not do that, and over all, that feels to me to be the better general purpose approach

  9. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

slack also notifies on reactions. but it does it "quietly" which i find nice

  10. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    without a popup that is

  11. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

there is just a menu button that shows all reactions to your recent messages

  12. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

and animates a reaction over it when it happens

  13. jonas’

that might in fact be a good middle-ground

  14. pulkomandy

at work (Mattermost) we rely a lot on reactions not sending notifications. It allows to acknowledge something without pinging anyone. If what you have to say is so important, probably a reaction is not the best way to do it?

  15. lovetox

And what if I wait for an acknowledgement?

  16. lovetox

In Teams I rely on the functionality that it pings the user

  17. jonas’

that's why it's important to have this consistently across the ecosystem

  18. jonas’

if users learn the rules by which things notify, they'll use the right tool

  19. jonas’

(reactions vs. short message in this case)

  20. Zash

Is it sensible to give more weight to reactions on your own messages than reactions on messages of others?

  21. jonas’

if the ecosystem is fragmented and goes by different rules for these things, it'll lead to confusion and pain

  22. jonas’

also remember that reactions are not displayed by many clients -> relying on them won't work anyway.

  23. Zash

jonas’, did you say modernxmpp.org? :)

  24. jonas’

    Zash, I did!

  25. lovetox

Almost every client has Notification Settings. And that's exactly what they are good for.

  26. singpolyma

We have a similar question about if replies should notify like a mention. We've made it an option for now

  27. nicoco

    > Is it sensible to give more weight to reactions on your own messages than reactions on messages of others? Yes? I don't think that reactions to messages of others trigger notifications in any chat software I've used. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant Zash.
