  1. nephele

Asking here since i figure someone might know. Do "open" providers for RCS exist? can one build something like that oneself? Could I bridge this via XMPP to be able to use RCS messaging on my desktop?

  2. wgreenhouse

nephele: the challenge would be getting anyone else's provider to talk to you. same for VoLTE

  3. wgreenhouse

these are both telco-designed protocols so the federation is "telcos trusted by other telcos"

  4. wgreenhouse

jmp is trying to get an RCS implementation going but this is one of the barriers

  5. nephele

Hmm, I suppose aslong as there is a provider willing to provide one access (for a desktop computer, or a gateway) that would be enough for such a bridge?

  6. nephele

I was not aware of jmp, it looks like they provide such a bridge for "normal" audio calls?

  7. wgreenhouse

    yes, and SMS/MMS

  8. singpolyma

Given how RCS is implemented at the moment (every major north american carrier delegates to Google's server, more or less) getting access is basically convincing Google to talk to you

  9. singpolyma

Which they are willing to under limited parameters via a few gatekeepers who want to charge heaven and earth for access

  10. singpolyma

But they keep saying it's opening up more post apple. Remains to be seen

  11. ukko

RCS is stinky and should be avoided like plague.

  12. citrons

    does apple use google servers?

  13. singpolyma

    citrons: yes

  14. citrons

    dire.

  15. moparisthebest

The whole situation is rather hilarious to me, imagine putting all this effort into something Google will just turn off 🤣

  16. moparisthebest

Something about those who don't learn from history being doomed to repeat it

  17. singpolyma

Well, if google turns it off the carriers will run their own (or more likely pay a different aggregator to do it)

  18. moparisthebest

More likely switch back to SMS or turn it off all together

  19. singpolyma

They (the carriers) have put quite a lot of time and money into it to just abandon. They know SMS won't be enough forever and they want to keep that revenue

  20. ukko

    Plus the data

  21. moparisthebest

They and Google put a ton of time and money into things then abandon them constantly

  22. moparisthebest

I assume it's a tax write-off or something because they do it like their business depends on it
