Sort of true. But with disco you can see if it identifies as a conference

singpolyma: yeah, this is the algorithm in jabber.el if you just say "hey, chat with that thing" without specifying if the entity is a conference or not. we check to see if disco#info has "conference" among the things it identifies as; if not (or if disco#info fails with an error), we try talking to it as a 1:1 contact.

You also need to check for a node. Bare domain cannot be a muc but MUC service does identify as conference
