  2. tom

edhelas, installing prosody on an embedded device?

  3. tom

    is that a good idea?

  4. tom

how do I turn off the user join user was kick user left messages in gajim?

  5. Link Mauve

tom, it is off by default since Gajim 1.0.

  6. tom

    I can't use gajim 1

  7. tom

    I'm on Gajim 0.16

  8. Link Mauve

I think there was something in the advanced configuration editor for that back then.

  9. Licaon_Kter

    tom: Windows XP?

  10. tom

    no

  11. tom

    gtk+3 isn't stable

  12. Licaon_Kter

tom: then, why stuck on that old version?

  13. tom

gajim 1 removes support for gtk+2

  14. Licaon_Kter

tom: is anything ever stable? What does that even mean?

  15. tom

    gtk2 is

  16. Licaon_Kter

And your distro is LTS? Maintained till when?

  17. tom

also gtk3 being a complete ui design failure

  18. tom

    http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=129186

  19. MattJ

tom, Prosody is quite popular on embedded devices

  20. Link Mauve

tom, note that this is about gtk4’s development process, not about gtk3 which hasn’t broken its API or ABI since its 3.0 release, nor about gtk4 once considered API/ABI stable.

  21. tom

it's not just the abi being changed that's the issue

  22. tom

MattJ, I didn't know it was that efficient

  23. MattJ

Well you're obviously not going to fit thousands of users on a small router, but sure, for a handful it's totally fine

  24. 404.city

Spam from akash@jabber.zone in groups chats

  25. Ge0rG

404.city: do you have some raw XML?

  26. Ge0rG

I had the impression akash is a real user, participating in a bunch of MUCs

  27. 404.city

Ge0rG, This is a real user, one of the developers of the Matrix. He spam inviting everyone to go to the Matrix.

  28. Ge0rG

404.city: maybe he's not a developer but just an over-eager user, like Neustradamus?

  29. MattJ

404.city, do you have an example message?

  30. 404.city

Ge0rG, What does it matter who he is. He told me that the client is writing for the matrix.

  31. 404.city

[08:46:21 AM] Akash: 时间尝试matrix [08:48:00 AM] Akash: 结果非常好看,看起来比以前好多了。

  32. Ge0rG

    I can't even read that.

  33. 404.city

[10:04:25 AM] Akash: > Akash: Changing message app each time is a huge challenge. I agree yea. However you get some extra things like room search, end to end encryption in rooms and 1:1 chat which you can access even after uninstalling the app, without requiring a back up of chats or keys in your device, voice, video calls etc

  34. Ge0rG

404.city: so it's not spam but an attempt to talk you into using matrix?

  35. 404.city

Ge0rG, He wrote to the Chinese calling their matrix in Chinese. He generally constantly calls everyone into the matrix.

  36. Ge0rG

404.city: didn't happen to me yet.

  37. 404.city

Ge0rG, Go into the matrix and try to say something about XMPP you will be banned immediately

  38. Ge0rG

404.city: last time I went into the matrix, cypher almost killed me.

  39. Ge0rG

404.city: seriously though, what's your point?

  40. Ge0rG

404.city: did you tell them to stop advertising for matrix?

  41. Ge0rG

or are you expecting everybody to ban their JID now from everywhere, based on hearsay?

  42. MattJ

    404

  43. 404.city

Ge0rG, The fact that this user is harmful, because the only purpose of finding him in XMPP is to advertise the matrix

  44. MattJ

404.city, I am currently standing next to the people who develop Matrix

  45. Ge0rG

MattJ: fast! tell them to ban akash!

  46. MattJ

and XMPP developers are having good interesting discussions with Matrix developers

  47. 404.city

Ge0rG, Yes, I told him to stop advertising the matrix.

  48. Ge0rG

    they even implemented XEP-0410!

  49. MattJ

Matrix is not one place, it is a protocol, they support different rooms. Each room has admins, just like XMPP

  50. MattJ

I have talked about XMPP in Matrix rooms and not been banned

  51. MattJ

I am also talking about Matrix in an XMPP room, and don't expect to be banned either :)

  52. pep.

    Such a deed

  53. MattJ

Spam is not good, but there is a difference between spam and strong opinions

  54. Ge0rG

MattJ: this is only because it's technically impossible to ban you from muc.xmpp.org rooms :P

  55. 404.city

MattJ, Come and tell me that the matrix servers do not cope well with high-loads, you will get banned

  56. Ge0rG

404.city: XMPP servers don't cope well with high loads.

  57. MattJ

It is up to the room admin to decide, I don't think this is a thing that warrants any server admin actions

  58. MattJ

404.city, even the Matrix developers have said that :)

  59. MattJ

But they also say they are always improving things

  60. MattJ

Just like XMPP has various problems, and we constantly improve

  61. MattJ

So it is not about what you say, but the context and how you say it

  62. 404.city

Let the admin server decide jabber.zone, but I do not support advertising Matrix on my server. The client software matrix is good, but the server side is crap.

  63. Ge0rG

404.city: so you disallow certain kinds of free speech on your server?

  64. Ge0rG

ban users for saying trigger words?

  65. 404.city

The Matrix uses 10 gigabytes of RAM for 50 users and database more 300GB

  66. Ge0rG

    404.city: stop it already.

  67. Ge0rG

404.city: nobody wants to hear your opinion about the matrix *here* :P

  68. 404.city

Ge0rG, This is not my opinion, this is statistics Matrix server disroot.org

  69. Ge0rG

404.city: this is totally off topic here

  70. Ge0rG

This room is about XMPP server operators.

  71. 404.city

Ge0rG,Here we are discussing the permissibility of spam, with malicious actions akash@jabber.zone I consider the matrix to be a scam, because they declare a federation, but can there really be a federation with such a consumption of resources?

  72. Ge0rG

404.city: come back later when somebody has written a bot to spam *all* MUCs, and not just to write something manually

  73. mati (jabber.at)

    aww man.

  74. mati (jabber.at)

I've been an XMPP operator since 2006.

  75. mati (jabber.at)

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SHIT LIKE THIS HAPPENED.

  76. mati (jabber.at)

    (note: jabber.zone = jabber.at)

  77. mathieui

    mati (jabber.at), what happened?

  78. mathieui

    (just saw the tweets)

  79. Ge0rG

    was there an actual incident?

  80. mati (jabber.at)

he joined in our channel and posted the JID

  81. Ge0rG

    who? 404.city?

  82. mati (jabber.at)

the one he posted before here too

  83. mati (jabber.at)

    yes

  84. Ge0rG

    so...

  85. Ge0rG

not like anything needs to happen now

  86. mati (jabber.at)

so in good faith (it's not a new server after all) I blocked the user.

  87. mati (jabber.at)

naturally, the user is unblocked now.

  88. mati (jabber.at)

still it does show that the XMPP network also has some crazy guys :-)

  89. mati (jabber.at)

any other messengers I should advocate over twitter? ^^

  90. Licaon_Kter

    mati (jabber.at): Briar @briarapp maybe? :))

  91. mati (jabber.at)

is that an XMPP client or something else?

  92. Licaon_Kter

mati (jabber.at): else, of course ;)

  93. Licaon_Kter

Jokes aside I understand 404.city, but c'mon, if XMPP is better there's nothing to talk about...let them go....

  94. Holger

Problem is it isn't better 😉

  95. 404.city

holger, The matrix has a problem with the servers, there really is a problem.

  96. mati (jabber.at)

wether one is better or not it's not acceptable to block users because they advocate a competing technology. It makes a very good point for them.

  97. 404.city

holger, The matrix uses too many resources, so it is impossible to start a public server on it

  98. Licaon_Kter

    404.city: then don't (re)start one...let them go and bother/load someone else

  99. 404.city

mati (jabber.at), You removed the server from your list, you censor even more than me

  100. mati (jabber.at)

    https://xkcd.com/1357/

  101. mati (jabber.at)

but in any case, I consider this matter closed. The user is restored, I will be more weary of spam reports in the future (lesson learned) and I see no reason to continue the discussion.

  102. Ge0rG

404.city: thank you for damaging our legitimate spam fighting efforts.

  103. mati (jabber.at)

now this guy is blocking s2s communication with jabber.at

  104. mati (jabber.at)

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  105. mati (jabber.at)

    (or only jabber.zone, apperantly)

  106. pep.

hah, just saw the tweet, (and finally understand the discussion)

  107. pep.

    fun.

  108. pep.

    I feel that's another call for <moved/>

  109. mathieui

what about a new "user activity" in PEP for "advertising other services"?

  110. mathieui

  111. 404.city

    Shit happens)

  112. ivucica deletes a block of text and decides to just say:

  113. ivucica

    What a drama
