XMPP Service Operators - 2020-06-14

  1. mehdi

Hi people, xmpp noob here. Is it too hard/time consuming to operate a reliable server for personal semi-public use in Germany? Are there legal consequences? thanks

  2. Licaon_Kter

    mehdi: semipublic?

  3. mehdi

ok, public. But I mean open to friends and family

  4. mehdi

I would also happily host a public node if I'm not responsible for users. hence the legal question

  5. Florian Aldehoff

mehdi: I'm running mine for family only (no self-registration) without problems. Once the server is up and running I'd recommend reducing log verbosity and take additional steps to collect as little data as possible. I haven't heard of any requests for disclosure but in the unlikely event it is always best if there's nothing to disclose in the first place.

  6. Florian Aldehoff

In German: "Wo ein Trog ist, da kommen die Schweine." 😉

  7. mehdi

Florian Aldehoff: haha, thanks! Not interested in Trog at all :)

    I find https://www.kuketz-blog.de/ejabberd-installation-und-betrieb-eines-xmpp-servers/ a helpful guide.

Bookmarked. Perhaps I'll ask over now questions now that's you're so kind to reply. How does xmpp compare to matrix? Recently I see matrix replacing irc, and I'm somewhat confused about these two.

  10. mehdi

sorry for the typos, blame autocomplete!

  11. Florian Aldehoff

Personally, I have no experience with Matrix. I've heard complaints that it can be very resource hungry compared to e.g. ejabberd. I guess the big advantage is the existing iOS client. Maybe someone else can chime in on that?

  12. Licaon_Kter

mehdi: for family and friends without free registration means private, not public That being said, you kinda trust your users so that's easier.

  13. Licaon_Kter

Regarding matrix, not sure you can cram 80 users on a Raspberry Pi 1 w/ 256Mb like you do with ejabberd. ;)

  14. mehdi

Licaon_Kter: good to know that, thanks! I'll probably use a Hetzner vm though.

  15. Licaon_Kter

Then your walled is your limit :))

  16. mehdi

    :D

  17. Licaon_Kter

Then your wallet is your limit :))

  18. thndrbvr

mehdi, If you're using a VPS, why not just find one hosted in Iceland or Switzerland? Or, really, any country that's not a part of the 14 eyes that'll accept your payment method.

  19. thndrbvr

Also, matrix-synapse is pretty awesome too.

  20. Ellenor Malik

IRC will never be fully replaced. Matrix is too resource-intensive, for one, and for two, there'll always be a diehard core of IRCers

  21. thndrbvr

I'm not sure why XMPP hasn't taken over aside from having to say "pp". 🤣 maybe just better web mucs?

  22. rom1dep

    > I'm not sure why XMPP hasn't taken over Because people use what other people use, and some people invested billions into making sure people use their thing and not something else 🙂
