I haven't used GNOME since v3 became standard over v2 but what they're doing is interesting. They're trying to reinvent what a DE is and how WMs work for now and the future. Simple but, with power underneath for those who want or need it

  2. thndrbvr

I feel like for regular people who aren't attached with any specific workflow on a computer, GNOME is probably a pretty solid start. That being said… I just can't get into Dino. Lol. +1 for Gajim for GTK environments for me.

  3. Licaon_Kter

tom: gajim 1.2.x is pretty nice, the UI has been polished

tom: > Ads for some onion site. It works by sending a roster request to people. > You don't have to accept it > But, the spammer later starts an OTR session > And sends ads Nice that Conversations can't do OTR, right? Oh wait...you don't like Conversations for your users

  5. Licaon_Kter

tom: > Don't sell XMPP as a path to freedom to most people > Sell it to them like they are expected to use it > And magically they will try to conform Yup... Seen the same > Most people don't think like you or I > In fact, thinking is painful for them. They think thinking is a chore Unfortunately...but it's human nature....conserve resources

  6. Link Mauve

tom, pretty off-topic by now, but as a mpv dev I can assure you it’s nothing more than a warning to throw off users who were complaining to us about missing decorations.

  7. Link Mauve

Now that we have decorations of our own, that point is now moot.

  8. Link Mauve

GNOME is slower than some other Wayland compositor at picking new Wayland protocols (but faster than most other DEs, KDE is still pretty much unusable AFAIK), but aside from that it’s pretty solid.

  9. tom

thank you for explaining that Link Mauve

  10. Link Mauve

Ah no, there is one other protocol missing, it’s the one that allows us to inhibit screen blanking when playing a video, now implemented in a WIP proposal: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/111

I've been using Kubuntu (with psi+) on my desktop for the last couple years and I think it's fantastic.

  12. tom

I think psi+ is great too, I just wish it wasn't a rolling release model

  13. tom

I'm not sure if psi+ still gets snap-shotted to psi
