XMPP Service Operators - 2020-11-30

  1. andrey.utkin

what do you guys do these days with the annoying low-frequency (~2 per day) robo-stranger randomized greetings (always english or russian) from a variety of domains? manually blocking them is quite annoying.

  2. mike

Block them anyway and get annoyed that no client makes it really easy to deal with. Dino is close but needs work, Conversations makes it such a pain to deal with.

  3. andrey.utkin

oh, true, the number of clicks it takes to close just one leaves sth to be desired. And lack of bulk operations for this.

  4. mike

Every client needs a one-click/tap "this is spam" for first messages from new contacts, and a clear "undo" path for accidents.

  5. andrey.utkin

considering that my server is used by very few people and nobody i think really expects anybody sensible to start talking to them via XMPP out of the blue, i am wondering maybe i could afford to just restrict this sort of interaction very tightly on the server scope.

  6. MattJ

mike, Conversations has exactly the one-tap block, no?

  7. andrey.utkin

MattJ, no, Breadcrumbs -> Contact details -> Breadcrumbs -> Block contact -> press BLOCK to confirm to the dialog

  8. pintosesk

One could turn one of the 'close conversation' side swipes into 'block user'.

  9. mike

Dino's main flaw is that the block switch is in an easily accessed menu, but it doesn't then close the conversation and you have to do that manually. Block should immediately close.

  10. mike

Which hilariously Conversations DOES do but actually performing the block is convoluted.

  12. MattJ

I get this popup when a stranger messages me ^

  13. Licaon_Kter

mike: > Which hilariously Conversations DOES do but actually performing the block is convoluted. Long press the allow button to block you mean?

  14. mike

What "allow" button? If there's a shortcut to do this I've never discovered it.

  15. Licaon_Kter

    mike: in the picture above...

  16. Licaon_Kter

    Nvm...

  18. mike

That's a real one I have right now. Only path to block it is as andrey.utkin said before.

  19. Licaon_Kter

Right, long press add back to block....not intuitive

  20. MattJ

Ah, so that's shown instead when there is a subscription request

  21. mike

Wow holy crap that is NOT discoverable

  22. mike

I had no clue that was possible

  23. mike

I have never seen the "Block" version.

  24. andrey.utkin

"long press Add Back to block" - i thought that was a joke.

  25. mike

It kind of is a joke, for a spam message a button labelled "Add Back" is the last thing I'm going to attempt interacting with.

  26. MattJ

Personally I rarely receive subscription spam, so I never saw the "Add Back" version

  27. Licaon_Kter

mike: > It kind of is a joke, for a spam message a button labelled "Add Back" is the last thing I'm going to attempt interacting with. It's spam now, is it spam when a friend contacts you? You get the same message...

  28. Licaon_Kter

    > Wow holy crap that is NOT discoverable > I had no clue that was possible Yes, long press actions are a pain...

  29. mike

Do you have a filter of some kind for unsolicited subscriptions, because I never get spam without one.

  30. andrey.utkin

Licaon_Kter, what's your point? When I see it's spam, i'm not going to press "Add back" and not going to discover the hidden blocking actions. When it's my friend, I'm going to press "Add back" and not going to discover the hidden blocking actions.

  31. Licaon_Kter

No, then again I never get spam since I don't advertise my id

  32. Licaon_Kter

You're going to close the chat if it's spam, or go to menu, details, menu, block, I guess

  33. Licaon_Kter

    Long press is faster

  34. andrey.utkin

yes, but it's still a joke of an interface, and i still don't get the point of your response to mike's statement.

  35. Licaon_Kter

The point was that there's a quick way to block, not sure what's lost in translation

  36. Licaon_Kter

Feel free to PR a better button or whatever.

  37. mike

Well, 11:30pm here, I'm taking this newfound knowledge of this well-hidden function to bed. Gnight folks.
