Which xmpp server do you recommend? I am still looking around... I am just a week or two into this, but looking for a decent server

  2. benharri

    ejabberd

  3. neox

    ^ This

  4. raucao

    :)

  5. 86ul

Seems possible. Thanks benharri and neox

  6. 86ul

    .... and raucao

  7. guus.der.kinderen

    Openfire obviously. 😇

  8. benharri

good luck :) if you're on debian i'd recommend using the packages in backports

  9. benharri

also be sure to refer to the example config in the upstream repo

  10. 86ul

Nope, I use Mint, but planning to move NixOS.

Personally I favour ejabberd, but I gather Prosody is quite popular these days.

  13. jayteeuk

    I'll second benharri's advice, though — don't rely on the distro's package.

  14. benharri

the debian backports package is on the current release

  15. Holger

Yes the Debian package is well-maintained.

  16. Holger

Less sure about NixOS 🙂 (But yes Nix is the future! Or should be.)

  17. jayteeuk

Sorry — I meant the distro's default (main) package.

Another vote here for ejabberd for a new server, but there's nothing wrong with choosing prosody at all. I just find ejabberd is less work out of the box right now. I run the version from debian backports on a couple of live servers and it's perfectly solid.

  19. TMakarios

I originally chose Prosody, rather than ejabberd because the existence of an ejabberd "Business Edition", as opposed to the "Community Server", made me nervous about the open-sourceness of future features.

  20. Holger

The additional features of the Business Edition are mostly just interesting to commercial, closed services (built-in support for push notifications which is only useful if the server operator controls the clients, stuff like that).

  21. Holger

Apart from those it's just an old (er, "stable") revision of the GPL code 😉

  22. neox

Stupid question : is it possible to configure an avatar for the ejabberd server contact (the one that send announce messages) ?

  23. Neustradamus

  24. neox

    Neustradamus, thanks x)

  25. neox

Quite funny that you answer xD just saw your emoji on my issue

  26. Neustradamus

    Ah ah
