Google is a ISP since 2007 ... And it is the only one who offers a free plan. Means you pay with your privacy.

  3. Arne

    uhh

  4. Arne

I wished we would build up an community run network xD

  5. Licaon_Kter

Arne: and this* is what exactly *xmpp

  6. Licaon_Kter

Arne: and this* is what exactly? *xmpp

tom, hey, don’t mock the algorithm! they make amazing music! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDS9gmdHtB8

  8. Arne

No not only xmpp also the complete connections and Hardware Licaon_Kter

  9. tom

Arne: XMPP is mostly community volunteer run networks

  10. tom

    But

  11. tom

I wish general consumers were smarter about knowing the difference between free in price because you are the product and free in price because it's a community volunteer run service

  12. tom

It would probably help if the lack of competition for ISPs in the united states was better, so ISPs wouldn't of completely gutted and/or outsourced all their services they are supposed to be offering to their clients

  13. tom

Like USENET access, Email, and an XMPP account

  14. Licaon_Kter

tom: they *think* they know, it irks them to show them their lack of understanding

  15. tom

In russia it's standard for your ISP to provide a community DC++ service i've heard

  16. Arne

I meant a community run ISP would be great. A little village could make this with own fiber connections etc.. I would help as engineer xD. But that's too idealistic I guess.

  17. Licaon_Kter

There are such networks, search for mesh ones, but they are few

  18. tom

Arne: I'm working on mesh network appliances

  19. ff255

    > In russia it's standard for your ISP to provide a community DC++ service i've heard It was like that in early 2000's, local area networks, dc-hubs...not now unfortunately...

    > I meant a community run ISP would be great. A little village could make this with own fiber connections etc.. I would help as engineer xD. But that's too idealistic I guess. I love this idea, and would love to see it happen. I considered something similar on a smaller scale, just for my block/street, via an Ethernet link from my ISP, but it seemed a lot of work and expense and unlikely to he sustainable. 😞

    > I meant a community run ISP would be great. A little village could make this with own fiber connections etc.. I would help as engineer xD. But that's too idealistic I guess. It exists in France : we have francilien.net

  24. Arne

    > It exists in France : we have franciliens.net Really, cool!

  25. SJM

Hey all - can anyone recommend an XMPP service that is easy to register and offer a web client? A colleague of mine is telling me that XMPP is hard to engage with and I would like to point him to an easy to use registration to prove differently - what would you recommend?

  26. Licaon_Kter

    movim.eu ?

  27. guus.der.kinderen

SJM: lots of services listed at https://list.jabber.at/

  28. SJM

    Thanks ‎Licaon_Kter ‎- will take a look

  29. guus.der.kinderen

Look for those with a 'registration' link

  30. SJM

guus.der.kinderen‎ - thanks, looking for recommendations, this person is influential so don't want the critics proven right, he needs slick experience

  31. SJM

movim.eu looks good - will give that a go

  32. guus.der.kinderen

Onboarding is a bit of a problem. That's facilitated by something like https://quicksy.im/

  33. SJM

yes - I am sure it will get there, however there are still excuses getting in the way of people adopting XMPP

  34. 404.city

    SJM https://xmpp-servers.404.city/

  35. SJM

    Thanks!

  36. SJM

    404.city: Thanks!

  37. kikuchiyo

SJM: > Hey all - can anyone recommend an XMPP service that is easy to register and offer a web client? https://web.conversations.im/ Why not recommend the service, that comes with the XMPP flagship app?

  38. kikuchiyo

I mean this doesn't help with the decentralization of the XMPP universe, but in your special case...

  39. Arne

I would recommend web.conversations.im or movim.eu for testing. For more you can use https://monocles.de/more/ but it's not for free.

  40. Arne

btw. there are some google things and cloudflare on https://xmpp-servers.404.city/
