XMPP Service Operators - 2021-04-01

  1. thndrbvr

I got an e-mail from Riseup saying they're shutting down their XMPP server :(

  2. rob

    That's a shame, how come?

  3. kousu

    Oh sad!

  4. kousu

They don't maintain it that well

  5. rob

    To much work I guess

  6. thndrbvr

Here's the letter: https://bin.disroot.org/?18905bd78aeb2444#Be4pLQ6Yo4NRmqhY7k68KteeJBRZgqV9gTvqrKRunjES Basically, they don't have the resources for everything they're trying to do.

  7. kousu

    > while providing important features which XMPP does not have..

  8. thndrbvr

I'm really curious as to what those are.

  9. kousu

That's only true if you haven't been kept in the loop

  10. rob

that's what i was thinking, what does matrix have that a good xmpp server does not?

  11. kousu

Probably omemo, http upload, history sync

  12. rob

haha ya we don't have that

  13. kousu

Their server is just really undermaintained

  14. kousu

    Well, fair enough

  15. rob

    ya

  16. kousu

Better to take down a server that gives a bad taste to newbies than to keep it kicking along

  17. thndrbvr

Yeah. It's unfortunate. I'd donate more to them if I had it. I assume they got hit doubly during the pandemic. More people online & less people willing/able to spend money.

  18. rob

i'd open my server up but it's not quite there yet

  19. thndrbvr

Same. I've got a long way to go and I keep kicking myself out of the ssh session tinkering with the firewall. Lol

  20. thndrbvr

It looks like Docker pulled in iptables and iptables / nftables rules are being written by ufw.

  21. rob

i'm pretty close, just the nice to haves aren't ready. like http_upload or external would be better, and stun/turn.. then i'm good i think

  22. kousu

Do you keep your servers under any kind of configuration management?

  23. rob

yes, a bit, maybe? :) what do you mean?

  24. rob

    so probably no

  25. kousu

Do you have an install script for your servers?

  26. rob

in a general sense yes, the whole thing is deployed as code with ansible

  27. kousu

Ansible or even just some shell?

  28. kousu

    Ah cool

  29. kousu

    I haven't

  30. kousu

but I've been learning ansible so I'm probably going to port my hand-done stuff to it

  31. rob

yep, it's ansible bash and docker all the way, with a bastion (vps) for the static ip so i have the actual server in my house

  32. rob

i'm using homelabos, but have been contributing and adding services. the current one is prosody, it's working now but not yet ready to merge. i want it to be super easy and result in a nice base server that's easy to add to

  33. rob

so a bit more templating and stuff before i get it merged, maybe add an external http upload service but i need to create the docker image as there isn't one afaik

    TL;DR: too much metadata https://pramen.io/en/2020/06/interview-with-riseup-tech-collective/
