riseup could deactivate mod_roster if that metadata bothers them

  3. Martin

No 0157 so maybe someone knows them.

  4. andrey.utkin

jonas’, are you the owner of https://search.jabber.network ? I hope you have data on how the number of known online domains has changed over time. If you do, could you please share it? Really curious to see the growth chart.

  5. Licaon_Kter

andrey.utkin: you know those are submitted and not...discovered, right?

  6. andrey.utkin

i don't think so: "We crawl all known domains for public rooms approximately once per hour..."

  7. Licaon_Kter

andrey.utkin: "known", yes, known from submissions

  8. andrey.utkin

    ah ok

  9. andrey.utkin

    indeed

  10. andrey.utkin

is there some crawler discovering the network on its own?

  11. andrey.utkin

i understand it won't be welcomed by everyone, but it'd be damn interesting to have a sense of the network size...

  12. moparisthebest

    How would that even work?

  13. moparisthebest

You could network scan all ipv4s for starttls ports but that wouldn't give you domains or direct TLS ports, or ipv6 hosts

  14. andrey.utkin

    😕 dunno.

  15. moparisthebest

You could look for srv records on all domains from the certificate transparency log, but miss out on wildcards

  16. moparisthebest

There is no central registry for xmpp servers though so no matter what you do you are bound to miss some

  17. jonas’

andrey.utkin: I only keep stats for the last 14 days unfortunately, there is not much fluctuation there

  18. menel

here are some numbers: https://blog.prosody.im/2020-retrospective/ but naturally still nobody knows the real network size

  19. menel

(I know its not a muber of rooms or users, but the only thing with numbers at all that I know of)

    That's a good read
