Plus, they'd argue that since you did that then you must have something to hide which is coincidentally whatever they're trying to get you on.

  2. raghavgururajan

    Howdy!

  3. raghavgururajan

I sent this email to IETF.

  4. raghavgururajan

Why IETF should keep XMPP as IM standard, instead of Matrix? (https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/tools-discuss/Cj7n-7HwsN8xBzXCjD1pjD1j9Cg/)

  5. thndrbvr

    Why not both?

  6. raghavgururajan

Two different standards for same application? conflicts, confustion, duplicate efforts, etc ..

  7. moparisthebest

    > Matrix seems to be started because of ignorance. Bahahahahaha raghavgururajan I almost spit out my drink, +1

  8. raghavgururajan

    xD

  9. moparisthebest

Probably more greed for that sweet sweet investor money instead to be honest

  10. rob

I'll have a look tom, better now than when I have double digit terabytes on it

  11. rob

raghavgururajan: good message. Side note, how can I subscribe to this list?

  12. tom

The IETF was considering making matrix a standard?

  13. tom

    Instead of XMPP

  14. tom

Have they been smokin too much gonja?

  15. moparisthebest

I think using matrix for ietf communication?

  16. tom

    Oh

  17. raghavgururajan

    rob: https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/tools-discuss

  18. rob

    Thank you

  19. tom

» ob> I'll have a look tom, better now than when I have double digit terabytes on it yeah. But also, if you use ZFS and have enough free space in your zpool, you can encrypt an already existing dataset by snapshotting it and sending it to a decentent of an encrypted dataset

  20. tom

Or copying the files over to a new encrypted dataset

  21. tom

Destroying the old dataset, and renaming the new one in place of the old one

  22. moparisthebest

With a btrfs array you can just replace an unencrypted device with an encrypted one one at a time

  23. tom

You have to do the whole device?

  24. tom

    Also

  25. tom

What is the point of having an encrypted and unencrypted device in the same system

  26. tom

Or do you mean your replacing the underlying block device members

  27. moparisthebest

Btrfs doesn't have built in encryption, so you either do block level under it or file level on top

  28. tom

    Oh

  29. moparisthebest

Yes, replacing them all until they are all encrypted

  30. tom

You can use LUKS or Geli with ZFS too, but you don't need to because zfs encrypted datasets exist

  31. tom

Be careful not to encrypt your boot disk

    Kris: https://www.heise.de/news/Gesetzespaket-gegen-Hass-und-zur-Passwortherausgabe-tritt-in-Kraft-6004554.html

  33. Kris

Hmm, I don't see anything in that link that would impact your "Auskunftsverweigerungsrecht"

  34. Kris

    ernst.on.tour

  35. Kris

and according to the source I am looking right now, it covers your life-partner and anyone up to 3rd grade directly related, so basically your full extended family

  36. Kris

also funny: if your priest runs your XMPP server, this also falls under special protection in Germany. Maybe time to start that Spaghetti Monster idea again 😉

  37. Kris

(this actually includes anyne working with your priest, so basically that might be an interesting legal loop-hole for server operators)

  38. Kris

    but IANAL of course 😉

  39. ernst.on.tour

If I understand the law the right way, I have to offer every information (incl. passwords) to the gov, regardless if my brother or a friend is written hatespeech. The person isn't known by me, because he only use a pseudo not his clearname.

  40. Kris

My understanding is that if you know it is your direct relative you can refuse implicating him/her

  41. Kris

but of course that is an indication for his/her "crime" and thus the authorities can further press charges

  42. Ge0rG

    > if your priest runs your XMPP server, Now *that* explains the IBR spam haven that was running on freie-baptisten.de a while ago!

  43. Kris

but without your coperation it might be difficult to proof anything

  44. Kris

but without your cooperation it might be difficult to proof anything

  45. ernst.on.tour

  47. Kris

    sorry for the german text

  48. Kris

but the source I am looking at says it covers any kind of questioning by authorities

  49. ernst.on.tour

    Okay, nice to know

  50. Kris

what I wonder about this new german law is, from what size on do you count as a "large" social media provider

  51. Kris

because apparently that makes a difference if you have to proactively share data with authorities now

  52. kahlb

In my opinion, Zeugnisverweigerungsrecht (§52StPO) applies to the whole trial. The idea of §52 is to keep the loalty and integrity of the family untouched, which refers to Art. 6I Grundgesetz. I'm pretty sure, one can't force you to actively contribute to a trial that is directed against a person that meets the requirements stated in §52I StPO. In such a case, I'd always refer to Zeugnisverweigerungsrecht. The next step for authorities would be a judical decision, where this case would be proved by a judge. That applies to german law only and I'm no lawyer, so consider this as an opinion only.

  53. ernst.on.tour

"Large" was defined in the "old" NetzDG If you have more than 100k users or be longer than 2 years active. The "you will have to earn money withit" is regardless, because each ad may bring you money. Each "Dackelzüchterverein" could be hitten, but automatic sharing will be only for the real big one. The erase-duty within 1 hour will be the second step after first step 4 hours.

  54. Kris

yeah that will be a bigger issue for sure. thanks for clarifing the "large" part.

  55. Licaon_Kter

    https://metalhead.club/@thomas/106035535105750216 any takers

  56. Licaon_Kter

    https://metalhead.club/@thomas/106035535105750216 any takers?

  57. winisreallybored

    hi

  58. rob

Licaon_Kter: I would but don't know what I would do with it

  59. rob

Host accounts for other people on my server I guess

  60. rob

It would be great for a statistical site about known networks etc

  61. rob

    Servers, clients, wiki/how-to stuff

  62. menel

https://search.jabber.network already exists and has a better name.
