    yoot

Yikes watch out anyone who runs VMware https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/06/under-exploit-vmware-vulnerability-with-severity-rating-of-9-8-out-of-10/

  3. rozzin

Sam: "easy invitations without having to involve the server admin" is also one of the things that I get out of my ejabberd / GNU social integration (since GNU social already has an invitation system). I'd guess that integrating with Mastodon/Pleroma/whatever probably has similar functionality as well?

  4. rozzin

And on that note..., I've been wanting to set up converse.js with GNU social such that once a user logs into the GNU social web UI, the user is preauthenticated to use XMPP via the converse.js widget embedded in the GNU social page..., but every time I try to actually do it, I read through the converse.js docs and I just can't seem to quite wrap my head around whatever is actually required.... Maybe someone here could provide some pointers?

  5. thndrbvr

    ^ same but with jsxc

  6. SouL

rozzin: have you tried to get help in the converse.js room?

  7. SouL

Sounds like you might get more chances there :)

  8. SouL

    Have* (sorry, early :D)

  9. Alex

Excuse me if it's already be discussed, but any thoughts on session?

  11. x0n

Licaon_Kter: thanks for that link re:matrix bridging!

  12. homebeach

Are there some statistics how many users are currently in the main XMPP network?

  13. homebeach

  14. Харпер

    "main"?

    > <@_xmpp_=425=430=440=43f=435=440=2foperators=40muc.xmpp.org:matrix.org> "main"? the network where muc.xmpp.org is connected

  19. Kris

    https://the-federation.info/ejabberd

  20. Kris

the-federation.info is opt-in so it captures only a very small number of servers

  21. Kris

homebeach, what makes you think xmpp.org is the "main" network?

  22. Kris

    xmpp isn't centralized like matrix

  23. Kris

    xmpp.org is mostly irrelevant 😉

  24. Ellenor&c Bjornsdottir

    heeh ;P

  25. Licaon_Kter

homebeach: > the network where muc.xmpp.org is connected I can't believe you've said that, that's some sad thing Arathorn brainwashed their users???

  26. Licaon_Kter

homebeach: i'll quote myself from elsewhere > Remember when XMPP was _just jelly_ when pointing that "matrix federation" is just a bullet point on slides? > https://tech.lgbt/@kolbychez/106348237839015667 > ...what is "matrix.org" and what is "Element" and what is "the Matrix protocol"?

  27. homebeach

well there probably are isolated xmpp networks including those used for proprietary service such as Google

  28. Licaon_Kter

    homebeach: whataboutism much?

  29. Menel

I think it's just a misunderstanding maybe. homebeach: most server don't connect at the moment to xmpp.org, since there are no users of the one server In a muc that is hosted by xmpp.org. But they are not isolated and could connect anytime. It's just another network structure.

  30. Licaon_Kter

Alex: > Excuse me if it's already been discussed, but any thoughts on session? Onion routing but NOT Tor, maybe not even yet active, soon™ Some $hit coin/blockchain integration Says p2p but no workie if can't login to their server Push service via Google Not fully FOSS cause non-free Google push libs, so not in F-Droid Need more?

  31. Alex

All good critiques but a couple notes

  32. Alex

    > Session now has an F-Droid repo for everyone who wants to avoid the Google Play Store.

  33. Menel

    > https://the-federation.info/ I think these numbers are so wrong it makes it more wrong to publish them then to say I don't know, because of the mentioned opt in and the unpopularity to do so. (I didn't even know it existed and I won't opt in now either)

  34. Licaon_Kter

homebeach: what is federation? Look, Conversations Offtopic room, 40 members, 34 different servers.

  35. Alex

    > Session’s Android client has two options for notifications: background polling, and Firebase Cloud Messaging. > If you choose the background polling method, the Session application runs in the background and periodically polls its swarm for new messages. If a new message is found, it is presented to the user as a local notification.

  36. Alex

Seems to be copying most of what conversations is doing

  37. Licaon_Kter

Alex: they have Google libs inside, that's a -1 point from me Great that it can do polling, so +1 Result? Zero :)

  38. Alex

Haha, sure thing, just trying to be objective. I don't yet see any benefits over xmpp

  39. Licaon_Kter

    Exactly...

  40. Licaon_Kter

homebeach: take Mastodon & co., I see sooo many now domains federating, posts upon posts on odd tlds, look above, I just noticed it's `.lgbt` that's wtf, it exists dammit On Matrix? Dunno... everybody recommends matrix.org and only that

  42. rozzin

"benefits over XMPP"? Meaning it can't connect to XMPP? That's a -1 right there... 😜

  43. x0n

wow, "matrix" definitely triggers something in here...

  44. Kris

    Licaon_Kter, I have news for you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.wtf
