XMPP Service Operators - 2021-06-15

  1. xorman

    rob: thanks, that was helpful

  2. xorman

so ejabberd supports clustering, but are MUCs clusterized too?

  3. Holger

No (only in the $$$ edition).

  4. x0n

Are there more than a handful of commercial ejabberds in operation? If so, what do they do?

  5. Licaon_Kter

    x0n: Nintendo, Fortnite(?), Nike, stuff

  6. Holger

Yes certainly way more than a handful.

  7. Holger

Some that I've been involved with: Normal (closed) chat solutions, gaming chat, IoT, radio streaming.

  8. Martin

    Radio streaming?

  9. Holger

It's used for controlling the streams, communicating metadata and such.

  10. Holger

(What radio station is to be streamed, what song is currently playing, …)

  11. Martin

Interesting. Can you say what radio service this is?

  12. Holger

Not a station, a piece of Windows software, plus some hardware internet radio thingies.

  13. x0n

Licaon_Kter, Holger: p cool. Do these operators blog or something?

  14. ernst.on.tour

    Isn't this done via MP3-Tag ?

  15. Licaon_Kter

x0n: no, private commercial servers tied to their products, not chat per se

  16. x0n

Yeah well, maybe even Nintendo admins like to blog? :)

  17. Licaon_Kter

x0n: Fortnite uses Tigase Also https://www.process-one.net/blog/ejabberd-nintendo-switch-npns/

  18. Kris

    > Fortnite uses Tigase interesting trivia... that makes it userbase much bigger than I though.

  19. Ge0rG

    FYI: https://xmpp.org/uses/gaming

  20. Kris

yes I knew fortnight like many Unreal engine games use xmpp, but not that it was specifically tigase for fortnight

  21. Ge0rG

    Somebody should PR the page

  22. 404.city

    >Licaon_Kter‎: x0n: Fortnite uses Tigase Tigase fork ejabberd?

  23. Kris

and rewrote it in java /s ?

  24. Licaon_Kter

    404.city: no

  25. x0n

    Licaon_Kter: thanks :)

  49. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Well as I understand the whole search page are blokking rooms having me.

  50. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

https://search.jabber.network/ is saud they censor any room I am in.

  51. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

    Said

  52. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

    For being a Nazi

  53. Sam

    plonk please

  54. vanitasvitae

    🍾️

  55. vanitasvitae

    this one?

  56. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Is this platform as wicked as the other "decentealized" platform. Is this how you censor things based on lies an force admins to ban people on false charges?

  57. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

The Tooth thing which name alludes me.

  58. MattJ

Hi there, this chat is for XMPP service operators to discuss the XMPP network, not to determine peoples' character and beliefs

  59. MattJ

If you have problems with specific services, please contact them directly

  60. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Well what do I know I was just contacted by an admin about yhese things.

  61. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

So literally forcing every room to ban me if they wanna be on the search page on false charges.

  62. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

As a newbie I don't know what you guys know about in regards of operation. But I do kniw I am not a Nazi.

  63. Kris

if you would stop spamming every channel that would certainly help

  64. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Kris: that is not yhe charge as far as I know!

  65. MattJ

The listing policy for search.jabber.network is here: https://search.jabber.network/tos#listing-policy

  66. Ellenor Malik

    Jfc..

  67. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

The charge is that I am tols I am Nazi.

  68. x0n

JesusGod-Pope666.Truth: 3 Our Father and 2 Ave Maria, you're absolved

  69. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Ahhh i guess the same polacy as the other "dicentalized" system. Don't abide with our depravity of covonant then you are out.

  70. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

What is the n.. Mastodone thats the name if the sick platform.

  71. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Seems this platform has some of the same issues.

  72. vanitasvitae

Thats free speech. If you say something stupid, people can show you the door.

  73. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

    Free speech is free speech?

  74. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Free speech what is free speech?

  75. rob

That's decentralized software, the best part of it. You only get to be heard if I want to hear you

  76. moparisthebest

JesusGod-Pope666.Truth, feel free to start your own server + muc where no one can censor you, that's the power of open standards and federation :)

  77. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

To force all admins to block me? Is that free speech or tyranny?

  78. moparisthebest

xmpp doesn't have a protocol to force other admins to do anything

  79. MattJ

Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything

  80. vanitasvitae

Tyranny would be if we'd have to listen to you .P

  81. moparisthebest

    I don't even know how that'd work...

  82. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

moparisthebest: but they do. I have just been tols by an admin he needa to ban me.

  83. moparisthebest

    BoX ? bullets-over-xmpp ?

  84. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Because hia room will not be on the search if He does not ban me.

  85. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Because his room will not be on the search if He does not ban me.

  86. MattJ

I linked the room listing policy already, your name is not mentioned

  87. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

That is forcing censorship hust like mastodone with there covinant.

  88. JesusWarrior

moparisthebes His chat will be excluded from the search https://search.jabber.network/ chats for fake reasone Nazism

  89. moparisthebest

you can run your own server with mastodon too by the way, I run my own pleroma

  90. moparisthebest

I think you've made the mistake of thinking anyone here cares who other people ban or for why

  91. vanitasvitae

🍿️🍿️ now there are two of them

  92. moparisthebest

this isn't the XMPP service complaint channel

  93. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

moparisthebest: yea but you will be disowned by all others if you don't follow the mastodon bullshit covenant just look at Gab.

  94. moparisthebest

only complaining about XMPP in general is allowed in here...

  95. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

And now the same is on XMPP

  96. MattJ

Ok, this discussion has run its course... reminder that this chat is for XMPP operators to discuss the XMPP network

  97. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

You have a service that removes rooma if they have me in there.

  98. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

You have a service that removes rooms if they have me in there.

  99. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

This is a serious issue of the network overall.

  100. jonas’

    no it’s no

  101. jonas’

    no it’s not

  102. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

If they can do it with they can do it to others based on lies and slander.

  103. jonas’

run your own instance of sjn if you don’t like my policies

  104. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

If they can do it with me they can do it to others based on lies and slander.

  105. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

jonas’: your policy to ban rooms from the service who has me in them because of falsw charges?

  106. jonas’

    no

  107. jonas’

the policy is written on the website

  108. Sam

mods: please just ban people if they argue, it doesn't help to keep this discussion going.

  109. jonas’

if you have issues with that, feel free to contact me using the contact data there

  110. jonas’

but this is not the place.

  111. MattJ

You've been shown the listing policy for search.jabber.network, you've been told that nobody is forcing anyone to ban you, and you've been told the topic of this chat

  112. JesusGod-Pope666.Truth

Sam: yea but you are notthe one getting banned are you?

  113. moparisthebest

to be clear, his service can ban people because of the color shirt they decided to wear last tuesday if he wants...

  114. jonas’

    ^_^

  115. moparisthebest

if you don't like it, run your own

  116. moparisthebest

just whatever you do, stop whining about it here, no one here cares

  117. x0n

    🍿️

  118. MattJ

Sam, if we banned everyone who argued... :)

  119. Sam

you know what I mean. Argued against a mod when told something is off topic.

  120. Sam

Banning all arguing would probably not work well :)

  121. Sam

Point is, it doesn't help to have a concept of on-topic if we don't enforce it. Just telling them multiple times doesn't help and just makes this room continue to be a real pain to follow because it's hard to separate the real information from the noise.

  122. MattJ

Sam, if banning was the end of it, sure

  123. vanitasvitae

I apologize for taking part in the off-topic discussion, but I just could not resist...

  124. Sam

vanitasvitae: I can never resist feeding the trolls either…

  125. moparisthebest

trolling vs explaining is sometimes a fine line but it looks to me like no one crossed it this time...

  126. pintosesk

Perhaps an XEP could help with that?

  127. Sam

Whatever you call it, it doesn't belong in this room.

  128. Sam

I hate that I keep having to leave this room, possibly missing valueable stuff, but discussions like this keep happening and then I end up with dozens of notifications. I don't know why it's this room in particular, but it's lost a lot of its utility because of it.

  129. jonas’

Sam, uhh ... I think your client is at fault for showing you notifications for all messages in this room ;)

  130. moparisthebest

I think this is maybe the second time in 3 months or something, and this one was way shorter than the first

  131. Holger

Maybe this room should be de-listed from s.j.n!

  132. Sam

Maybe so, I'm just asking that it be cut off sooner next time if possible, I don't think that's unreasonable. I mean, obviously if no mods are around it can't be, but if they are it's not worth trying to convince these people.

  133. vanitasvitae

Holger, or require some proof-of-adminship 😛

  134. Sam

Give them a warnig, and if they persist then kick them or ban them or whatever you do.

  135. MattJ

vanitasvitae, we already have that, kinda

  136. MattJ

Admins are auto-verified via XEP-0152 and given membership status

  137. MattJ

I also manually granted membership to XSF members (can't guarantee I didn't miss anyone though)

  138. Sam

huh, I didn't know that, that's really cool

  139. vanitasvitae

    ah neat!

  140. MattJ

I'd rather keep the room open if we can, but if the need arises I'll mute non-members (as was necessary in the past)

  141. ernst.on.tour

Sam: > I don't know why it's this room in particular, but it's lost a lot of its utility because of it. 👍

  142. MattJ

But I also don't want to present that as anything more that an assistance to moderators... just running an XMPP server doesn't grant you an absolute right to speak here

  143. jonas’

vanitasvitae, that’s what authbot does :)

  144. MattJ

I'm always happy to be pinged (here or privately) if someone feels moderation is needed, relying on my to stumble across the room (I'm in 70+ channels) isn't always going to be timely

  145. jonas’

.oO(poezio feature request: heat index on rooms indicating the current message rate)

  146. MattJ

    Oooh

  147. jonas’

bonus if it counts the occurence of highlights and how balanced that is

  148. jonas’

(the more "incoming" highlights a nickname gets vs. outgoing it generates, the more heated)

  149. MattJ

    XEP-xxxx: Consistent heat index generation

  150. jonas’

    hah

  151. moparisthebest

    jonas’ just nerd-sniped himself...

  152. Holger

Add the logic to the bot, if the index rises above 42, remove voice from non-members for 24h. So MattJ can just watch and drink coffee.

  153. Holger

    Case closed.

  154. MattJ

    I like this

  155. MattJ

    Except the coffee part

  156. Holger

Ah sorry you're British of course.

  157. Sam

Sorry, too late, it's already been decided, you are now a coffee drinker!

  158. Sam

We'll be sure to research your preferences next time before making a decision

  159. ernst.on.tour

    Why 42 ? Couldn't it be 23 for first strike ?

  160. Licaon_Kter

ernst.on.tour: 42 is the answer, let it go

  161. rob

    It's always the answer

  162. ernst.on.tour

I knew 42 is the ultimativ answer but nobody seems to know 23 I guess

  163. vanitasvitae

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/23_(film) ?

  164. ernst.on.tour

Yes, but also Illuminati or "to make a 23 Skidoo" Don't know if Karl Koch is known outside germany

  165. jonas’

    speaking about on-topic… :)

  166. x0n

karl koch is definitely on topic because if you talk talk koch, you need to mention tron. and he was building a crypto-phone (so gp to xmpp so to say) when he was murdered *and* it has 23 all over it

  167. Ellenor Malik

    > moparisthebest wrote: > you can run your own server with mastodon too by the way, I run my own pleroma pleroma has abuse features

  168. Ellenor Malik

    ignoring blocks

  169. moparisthebest

I'm interested in what you mean but I'll ask in the offtopic channel since it doesn't really fit here :)

  170. Sam

I tried setting up pleroma recently so that I could do some dev work on a mastodon/xmpp related plugin, but its dev setup had a *lot* of steps and I had problems with it. Finally got it running, but it reminded me why I don't like to run anything erlangy even though beam is a great VM.

  171. Sam

(or anything that requires a VM; it always ends up with tons of config/steps for something that should have just been "create a config file and run an executable")

  172. Sam

so I didn't get a good look at pleroma anyways; I'll have to try it again at some point.

  173. moparisthebest

Sam, I run mine using https://memleak.eu/sn0w/pleroma-docker been great

  174. 404.city

Does anyone know the system characteristics for running Mastodon or Pleroma? XMPP is light on resources and can be supported by donations.

  175. moparisthebest

pleroma is elixir, it's light, mastodon is ruby...

  176. rob

Pleroma is indeed very light, currently using about 250mb ram and it's running in docker

  177. Kris

    404.city, https://blog.windfluechter.net/2021/05/01/the-fediverse-what-about-ressources/

  178. Kris

actually Mastodon seems to scale better then expected, but Pleroma should still be better

  179. Kris

I recently red somewhere that memory consuption of Pleroma is 4-5x lower on typical small instances

  180. Licaon_Kter

rob: > Pleroma is indeed very light, currently using about 250mb ram and it's running in docker Usercount?

  181. Licaon_Kter

rob: > Pleroma is indeed very light, currently using about 250mb ram and it's running in docker User count?

  182. 404.city

Kris‎: At the moment I have about $ 20 a month in donations, if you break that down into months when there are no donations at all. In total, we get 1 cent of donation per 1 active user.

  183. Kris

yeah tht is not much to work with indeed

  184. rob

    > rob: > User count? 2 lol

  185. Kris

might be just the base use... more nteresting how it scales per user

  186. Kris

I think Mastodon has a quite high base use, but then scales relatively well per extra user

  187. Licaon_Kter

rob: 250Mb sounds like a lot for only 2

  188. x0n

    > I'm interested in what you mean but I'll ask in the offtopic channel since it doesn't really fit here :) Which one is that?

  189. rob

    > rob: 250Mb sounds like a lot for only 2 That's the whole process of the container, I don't know how to dig into the memory details inside. Other than top but it isn't working well on my phone

  190. moparisthebest

Licaon_Kter, XMPP has spoiled you, webapps eat memory :P

  191. mjk

    x0n: xmpp:conversations-offtopic-reloaded@conference.trashserver.net?join probably
