XMPP Service Operators - 2021-07-02

  1. rob

The operators list is so quiet I forgot I was subscribed and tried to do so again

  2. MattJ

    :)

  3. moparisthebest

we all have XMPP, why use that terrible ancient SMTP protocol to discuss anything?

  4. rob

    Lol

  5. croax

moparisthebest: useful for topics like "My server can't join/is blocked by the federation", "Whole federation is down du to a protocol flaw", "EMP destroyed all datacenters on earth", "XMPP.org has been sold to <winner>"... oh maybe not these last ones :-)

  6. croax

moparisthebest: useful for topics like "My server can't join/is blocked by the federation", "Whole federation is down due to a protocol flaw", "EMP destroyed all datacenters on earth", "XMPP.org has been sold to <winner>"... oh maybe not these last ones :-)

  7. rob

Or for really important things, I guess

  8. Licaon_Kter

croax: you can email still after emp?

  9. rob

Licaon_Kter: only on our loRa mesh

  10. croax

Licaon_Kter: you could dig out some military equipments in a bunker which provide access a telnet console... probably more difficult to get an XMPP client!

  11. Licaon_Kter

    `talk` then

  12. moparisthebest

"Whole federation is down due to a protocol flaw" sorry that's a matrix-only feature 🤣️

  13. moparisthebest

    (I'm not joking/exagerating https://matrix.org/blog/2021/06/30/security-update-synapse-1-37-1-released )

  14. 512

    oof

  15. Martin

    > memory explosions, I only knew about exploding laptop batteries…

  16. rozzin

    > you could dig out some military equipments in a bunker which provide access a telnet console... probably more difficult to get an XMPP client! I think there may actually be a lot of military use of XMPP....

  17. rob

    That would be neat

  18. 512bit

how are the XMPP addresses hidden? is our msgs routed through the room moderators' xmpp servers

  19. moparisthebest

    through the MUC server yes

  20. 512bit

    oh

  21. Ellenor Malik

the MUC server exposes addresses to moderators

  22. 512bit

how would you DM someone your address?

  23. Licaon_Kter

You can private message in most MUCs 512bit

  24. Martin

    > I think there may actually be a lot of military use of XMPP.... Isn't that stanag thing also used by military?

  25. Ellenor Malik

    Stanag?

  26. croax

512bit: you can DM someone through the MUC without knowledge of his address (JID) but using his nick. Send your JID using this way.

  27. 512bit

    /msg croax yo test

  28. 512bit

    wait oops

  29. Ellenor Malik

    :)

  30. croax

Oh sorry Licaon_Kter actually I though you were referring to cryptography while it was their nick!

  31. Martin

    Ellenor Malik: > Stanag? https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0365.html

  32. croax

512bit: Address (if using raw protocol, but should RTM of your client) is mucname@hostmuc/nick

  33. Martin

    Also regarding military use: https://www.isode.com/markets/military-xmpp.html

  34. rob

    Weird, federated muc's

  35. Ellenor Malik

    Something we must make

  36. Ellenor Malik

    Something we must remake

  37. rob

    It would be pretty cool

  38. rob

But also a bit matrix like

  39. rob

Would we be replicating the entire history?

  40. Ellenor Malik

    Maybe, maybe not

  41. Ellenor Malik

from the point the federation was established, sure

  42. rob

That would be ideal I think. Just as each participant joins, maybe parties should honor the origin constraints for things like retention

  43. 512

    sounds cool

  44. 512

    sounds cool
