  1. Licaon_Kter

    wtf? https://www.xmpp.jp/vcard

  2. jonas’

    what the

  3. jonas’

it is in their privacy policy though

  4. jonas’

    yuuuck

  5. Licaon_Kter

Yes and no, publish when you add as contact or smth, but publish on website to be crawled by anyone feels like one intentional step further. Eg. Spammers just need to refresh the page and get IDs...for free

  6. jonas’

    yes

  7. jonas’

also, vcard is indeed public without presence subscription or somesuch

  8. jonas’

but you still need to know the JID

  9. Licaon_Kter

    Exactly

  10. jonas’

publishing the vcards along with the JID is... uh

  11. Ellenor Bjornsd.

it's a choice which should be the user's

  12. moparisthebest

Excellent, now someone just needs to write a bot to ping xmpp.jp users everytime they touch their vcard

  13. jonas’

"nice pic!" "you look good today!" "congrats on the new name!"?

  14. moparisthebest

    > hey I see you updated your vcard/name/profile pic because your server publishes these publicly, have a nice day!

  15. jonas’

    :)

  16. jonas’

"contact $contactAddressOfxmppjp if you don't like that"

  17. moparisthebest

    Yyyeeeesssss

  18. jonas’

bonus if using an xmpp.jp JID to do it ... :)

  19. moparisthebest

    hmm evil, I like it

  20. Trbl

xmpp might get a bit more popular as the chatcontrol law passed in the EU

  21. moparisthebest

    doesn't that make XMPP illegal

  22. Trbl

everything i like to do is illegal, won't affect me much

  23. Ellenor Bjornsd.

    mew

  24. Trbl

"everything i like to do is illegal" is the title of a pretty good book btw

  25. rozzin

    Hmmm:

  27. Licaon_Kter

    rozzin: chatcontrol.eesu

  28. Licaon_Kter

    rozzin: chatcontrol.eu

  29. rozzin

    Licaon_Kter: I know, actually. It's just...

  30. Licaon_Kter

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  31. Licaon_Kter

    7th link heh

  32. Licaon_Kter

    6th on Qwant, meh

  33. 404.city

‎Licaon_Kter‎: Spammers do not spam xmpp.jp because it is a spam server for buy spam mailings. Feedback contacts were located at xmpp.jp for a long time, and the server ignored any complaints from other servers.

  34. Licaon_Kter

    404.city: (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

  35. 404.city

I personally did not speak with the admin of xmpp.jp, but there are at least 2 people in this chat who have been refused to block contact back to buy spam.

  36. mjk

Also, I seem to remember xmpp.jp itself sends ads to its users. Although, details are hazy in my memory, so it could be regular spam

  37. Licaon_Kter

mjk: their Converse chat page has Google Analytics and Ads

  38. Licaon_Kter

mjk: their Converse chat page has Google Analytics and Ads scripts loading

  39. mjk

Welp, not all federating xmpp servers are equally good for your ~health~ privacy

  40. Licaon_Kter

    Tru story :))

  41. mjk

Ah, the ad thing I saw here: https://www.xmpp.jp/policy > We may send ads to online users(about once a month). Which seems strangely sparse

  42. mjk

But it probably means they harvest conversations for targeting

  43. moparisthebest

    it doesn't say that

  44. mjk

    True

  45. moparisthebest

which is a better business model, for privacy, google+facebook's, or sending ads to your users once a month to pay the hosting bill?

  46. moparisthebest

seems like a valid business model to me, assuming they are open about it like it appears

  47. mjk

Yes, it's good they're open about it and don't seem to share data with third parties. Still, once a month seems too few to cover any costs if it's not targeted

  48. moparisthebest

if I was an advertiser I'm not sure why I'd pay xmpp.jp admin to advertise for me when I can just harvest JIDs from their vcard page and send my own for free

  49. mjk

    mod_block_strangers?

  50. mjk ducks

  51. moparisthebest

    good point

  52. mjk

But yeah. The vcard publication seems relatively new to me

  53. emus

has anyone considered telling them not to do this?

  54. emus

    I just did
