Doesn't FCM use xmpp under the hood? It makes sense for Conversations to be a distributer :)

The thing about FCM isn't what protocol it uses, but that it doesn't generally suffer from overly-aggressive battery optimizations on problematic Android ROMs

But the process maintaining that connection is part of the system and isn't easy to replace (unless you use a more open ROM, which generally doesn't have the battery optimization issues anyway)
