oh, I tooted something in some thread and that caused a significant request stampede which overflew apache's queues. I guess I need to tune some numbers there :-)

Yeah, that was perhaps true maybe a couple of decades ago, but once the process/thread worker model started to show its limits, Apache implemented support for the same async event-based model nginx uses. Many high-traffic websites use Apache in production, including Wikipedia for example.
