XMPP Service Operators - 2023-05-16

  1. ☭Mike Yellow

Who operate “conversations.im”? I wonder about how many new users it have in the past a month.

  2. Licaon_Kter

☭Mike Yellow: not sure they'll tell...

  3. Licaon_Kter

    Read https://account.conversations.im/

  4. ☭Mike Yellow

Chinese new users are casual. Most of them select the default server even we suggested not to use only one.

  5. Licaon_Kter

Not a Chinese thing I guess, most users in general will do

  6. ☭Mike Yellow

    Will conversations.im overload?

  7. Menel

Depends on how many I guess

  8. Menel

If all of China just joined, then maybe

  9. ☭Mike Yellow

    Of course......

  10. ☭Mike Yellow

    > If all of China just joined, then maybe “maybe”? Not “will”? It can serve one billion users?

  11. Licaon_Kter

I bet that not in the current state

  12. Licaon_Kter

Buuut, if every one of that billion users buys the Conversations client from Play Store, sure

  13. ☭Mike Yellow

    ……

  14. Licaon_Kter

    Or donate... https://gultsch.de/donate.html

  15. Trung

    yeah notthing is free lunch.

  16. Trung

    > ☭Mike Yellow: Chinese new users are casual. Most of them select the default server even we suggested not to use only one. > Licaon_Kter: Not a Chinese thing I guess, most users in general will do I think even though they are not paying yet for the service and as a habit joining a single server, just make sure that after they start using, step by step guide to them to understand how the infrastructure work. It's the same approach in video games where the first few rounds are easy and you learn how the game works before you can have fun.

  17. ☭Mike Yellow

    > I think even though they are not paying yet for the service and as a habit joining a single server, just make sure that after they start using, step by step guide to them to understand how the infrastructure work. That's no problem.

  18. ☭Mike Yellow

    I promise it.

  19. Trung

    thank you for doing this.

  20. ☭Mike Yellow

Which server satisfy the following requirements?: ①Allows public political communication and movement. ②Has no limit in room users amount. We are going to establish a psyche beacon to make Chinese use XMPP (and believe socialism in the meanwhile). You know, it is impossible to popularize XMPP by the family use way, only political movement can do.

  21. ☭Mike Yellow

    No need HTTP file upload.

  22. ☭Mike Yellow

No need HTTP file upload at all.

  23. Licaon_Kter

    More families more people

  24. Licaon_Kter

    All servers allow political... buuut...

  25. ☭Mike Yellow

Maybe all servers have a room users amount limit, shown or hidden.

  26. Trung

I'm not aware of limiting number of users in Prosŏdy

  27. Martin

That doesn't mean there is no limit. There is always a limit.

  28. ☭Mike Yellow

Scattered people prefer large file storage, which is XMPP can not do. But we socialists know that all instant messager can not be popular with large file storage service, so we choose XMPP on purpose.

  29. Ellenor Bjornsd.

☭Mike Yellow: What is your first language?

  30. Licaon_Kter

But as usual, contact the admin to bump it

  31. ☭Mike Yellow

    > That doesn't mean there is no limit. There is always a limit. Understandable.

  32. ☭Mike Yellow

    > ☭Mike Yellow: What is your first language? Simplified Chinese.

  33. ☭Mike Yellow

I can not judge tense correctly in English.

  34. Trung

    > Martin: That doesn't mean there is no limit. There is always a limit. what's the limit?

  35. Ellenor Bjornsd.

Simplified Chinese is a written language only. Unless you are deaf from birth, you must have acquired some other languages whose written form where you are is Simplified Chinese.

  36. Ellenor Bjornsd.

    > Trung a écrit : > what's the limit? Computing resources.

  37. ☭Mike Yellow

    > > Trung a écrit : > > what's the limit? > Computing resources. Yes.😁️

  38. Ellenor Bjornsd.

☭Mike Yellow: Your organization should consider spinning up its own server, preferably somewhere like the Seychelles where it's somewhat beneficial for both NATO and the CCP (who I assume you are part of a dissident faction of) to leave them alone

  39. Trung

that's a hardware problem. Not software. It's the same as infinite growth. Asking that is silly

  40. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Simplified Chinese is a written language only. Unless you are deaf from birth, you must have acquired some other languages whose written form where you are is Simplified Chinese. Maybe you want to know if it is some kind of dialect. It is my secret. I refuse to answer. Please keep on topic.

  41. Trung

yeah set a server up and make your own rules.

  42. Licaon_Kter

    _What is a SPOF?_

  43. Ellenor Bjornsd.

    Licaon_Kter: singular point of failure

  44. maëlys

I think they're implying that it would be a spof

  45. Licaon_Kter

I know what it is, but do you or you or ☭Mike Yellow ? :)

  46. ☭Mike Yellow

Yeah. We choose decentralized communication on purpose too.

  47. Martin

    >> Martin: That doesn't mean there is no limit. There is always a limit. > what's the limit? I don't know, but saying there is no limit is wrong. Also the limit probably depends on setup, HW etc.

  48. ☭Mike Yellow

What ever. Thank you for replying, we will choose the one by ourselves.

  49. ☭Mike Yellow

Whatever. Thank you for replying, we will choose the one by ourselves.

  50. ☭Mike Yellow

    > yeah set a server up and make your own rules. Too hard to do it before the revolution.

  51. ☭Mike Yellow

Learning and writing a Chinese XMPP user manual consumed much of our energy already.

  52. Trung

    > ①Allows public political communication and movement. Most servers allow private groupchat. Keep whatever it is that you are discussing private and have it encrypted and not many would care. > ②Has no limit in room users amount. This is a hardware problem as mentioned. Most servers don't have a limit in software. If you grow to a billion users your whatever groupchat is going public anyway so start using IRC then. Anything else?

  53. ☭Mike Yellow

    > > ①Allows public political communication and movement. > Most servers allow private groupchat. Keep whatever it is that you are discussing private and have it encrypted and not many would care. We are going to establish a bot to answer many kinds of questions including XMPP and socialism and etc. This bot can only be used in room, both the software desigin and the real use condition are.

  54. ☭Mike Yellow

It can only be a public room.

  55. Trung

well that's why me (and now Ellenor Bjornsd.) have suggested that you spin up your own server so you can achieve whatever it is that you want. But like Licaon_Kter said, the disadvatange is SPOF.

  56. ☭Mike Yellow

    >>②Has no limit in room users amount. >This is a hardware problem as mentioned. Agree.

  57. ☭Mike Yellow

    >Anything else? No more questions for now.

  58. ☭Mike Yellow

Maybe we take one step and look around before taking another. We do not know if we can reach 200 users in a room for now.😁️

  59. ☭Mike Yellow

Yeah. The room users amount limit is not a so-good way to stop spammers...

  60. ☭Mike Yellow

Yeah. Unlimited room users amount is not a so-good way to stop spammers...

  61. Trung

this run Metronome and has 2000 people in it: xmpp:support@conference.yunohost.org?join

  62. ☭Mike Yellow

OK. But I do not think my organization will learn and write a Chinese manual on how to establish an XMPP server. My there will be other Chinese volunteers to do it, even we can not establish XMPP server in China in such a political condition.

  63. ☭Mike Yellow

OK. But I do not think my organization will learn and write a Chinese manual on how to establish an XMPP server. Maybe there will be other Chinese volunteers to do it, even we can not establish XMPP server in China in such a politic condition.

  64. ☭Mike Yellow

  65. msavoritias

    >> Martin: That doesn't mean there is no limit. There is always a limit. > what's the limit? MUC the standard has limitations for handling a lot of thousands of users. One of them being that everybody needs pieg everybody all the time. But these can be worked around usually. With help from the admin. At least in prosody.

  66. msavoritias

    to ping*

  67. iiro

    hello

  68. ilmais1n

how widely is the POSH thing supported in xmpp ecosystem nowadays?

  69. ilmais1n

am i likely to encounter federation issues if i use that instead of having a certificate that is valid for the apex domain?
