XMPP Service Operators - 2023-05-31

  1. nuegia.net

please don't do that. it defeats the whole purpose of xmpp

  2. nuegia.net

if your going to do that, you might as well just use some proprietary walled garden that nobody can create an account on

  3. agh

I think that his point, to control and lock down the MUC

  4. agh

    Typical Marxist-Leninist tactics

  5. agh

Easier to deal with counter-revolutionaires /s

  6. ☭Mike Yellow

nuegia.net, what is the purpose of XMPP at the beginning or now?

  7. ☭Mike Yellow

agh, Yes. But by the way, whatever what we believe, all political communication and movement needs that.

  8. nuegia.net

It's a huge problem when especially new users get on XMPP and nobody can actually talk to them because their server broke federation without already being in a roster

  9. nuegia.net

404.city did this in the past

  10. ☭Mike Yellow

nuegia.net, I do not host a server. I am just an advanced user who taking some other new users come to XMPP.

  11. Trung

XMPP is a neutral communication tool that gives you the freedom to do whatever you want as long as you agree to the license of the software and services you are using.

  12. Trung

do whatever you want 😊 no one is to judge

  13. ☭Mike Yellow

    > nuegia.net, I do not host a server. I am just an advanced user who taking some other new users come to XMPP. I do not think some users trying XEP-0016 will damage the XMPP world environment.

  14. nuegia.net

oh that, I thought you were talking about dropping messages to users who aren't in a roster

  15. ☭Mike Yellow

nuegia.net, you can not expect XMPP become popular in “normal” users without politics power, can you?

  16. nuegia.net

just keep in mind that unless you have a disclaimer, users who are new to XMPP get a impactful first impression of XMPP as a whole the first server their on, and if that server is partially broken they end up think XMPP as a whole is like that.

    > oh that, I thought you were talking about dropping messages to users who aren't in a roster Spam? We do not like doing that. It is tired and meaningless.

  21. ☭Mike Yellow

    > oh that, I thought you were talking about dropping messages to users who aren't in a roster Spam? We do not like doing that. It is tiring and meaningless.

  22. ☭Mike Yellow

Hope we will have the “Hats” function(XEP-0317) achieved to show what roles we are. Server host or user.

  23. ☭Mike Yellow

So the “XEP-0016” is “Deprecated” because spam servers would take advantage of it, I guess?

  24. MattJ

It's deprecated because it's too complex and confusing, and how it interacted with various parts of XMPP was never properly settled and it was very easy for people to accidentally break stuff (you found this out for yourself). All most people want and need is a way to block people. Ideally anything else they want/need should be the default behaviour or easily configurable.

  25. ☭Mike Yellow

Understandable. Just do not make it obsolete.

  26. ☭Mike Yellow

We would still recommend it to advanced users.

  33. Ellenor Bjornsdottir

    and myself.

  34. Ellenor Bjornsdottir

I don't see any spam at all.

  35. Trung

thanks. Very happy to be on the list.

  36. agh

I think Trung was being appropriately preemptive
