> Sorry for the delay, it took some time to get clarification from your .tld registry what was going on, but they have now fixed it and your domain is resolving properly again. Looks like I'm back.

Interesting how servers expire or cache DNS, as I've lost trashserver, process-one, in the first 12h. Quicksy took 24. Here, siacs.eu, yax, dino, tigase at least, still were going strong.

TTL varies ™️

Licaon_Kter
My refresh was 3h or so, so I was expecting them to drop me in... 3h :))
-
Maranda
and how servers deal with caching S2S entries (if at all), as well
-
Licaon_Kter
That too, yes.

Menel
Un I guess as long as s2s connection works it had no reason to do a new dns lookup?
-
Menel
As long as s2s doesn't reconnect....
-
Licaon_Kter
Funny that quicksy users still got my messages, but they could not reply.
-
Maranda
A lot of server implementations just close inactive streams
-
Maranda
so a reconnection is bound to happen
-
Maranda
sooner or later, more on the sooner

Licaon_Kter
I did not touch the server, luckily, so that might have prolonged it.

Ejabberd does, prosody doesn't... > Funny that quicksy users still got my messages, but they could not reply. Maybe s2s out worked but no s2s in
-
Maranda
Didn't know there was just ejabberd and Prosody, I had some more names on that list and all besides Prosody do close inactive s2s streams by default
-
Menel
I just don't know about the others 🙂

But this problem of Licaon_Kter got me thinking how helpless one can get with this. But a self hosted dns server also wouldn't have helped, because the records telling about that dns server would still be in the hands of the same people that causes the problem now, right?

jonas’
Licaon_Kter, TTL, but also how long they keep s2s open (avoiding the need for DNS lookups)

derp, late to the party, I am

Menel, it takes one middle-person out of the equation (the DNS provider), which helps for control. but if something goes wrong between registrar and TLD, you're generally quite screwed

Menel
Thanks for the confirmation 👍

FYI, this is .im tld and my registrar renews my .im but does not sell/rent/whatever .im anymore. Add this to the _".im is awful"_ box of complains. Will ask for followup info next.

Funny that Conversations ticked along just fine all this time for messaging* and it if wasn't for one device that was out of battery, I would not have noticed that early. *uploads failed next as upload.mydomain was NX too.

Funny/sad that all my offline time was from external faults, power off, internet off, internet switched to dslite, in these >5 years of me hosting my own.

Also, biboumi worked fine :)

Licaon_Kter
> it takes one middle-person out of the equation (the DNS provider) Not sure to whom I was going to complain then, since registrar is hands-off if I do DNS on my own. Straight to IOM tld
-

Licaon_Kter, the registar is still responsible for sending the NS, DS and glue to the tld, so you'd still talk to them about such issues.
