I'm afraid this is off-topic for this room

  6. ☭Mike Yellow

Just understand like this: We could help everyone before, but now “everyone” is “too many”, so we help the people who can be our friends at first.

I am just a volunteer, not a master or leader of XMPP or this room.

  9. ☭Mike Yellow

The “we” I mean are our comrades, not the people in this room.

Hello, mates. I want to create a new public room, but this time I want to try an MUC server hosted by Openfire or Tigase. I want your ideas or suggestions.

  14. Licaon_Kter

    ☭Mike Yellow: xmpp.cloud tigase.me jabber.today sure.im lol

  15. Licaon_Kter

    For Openfire, dunno Guus ?

  16. ☭Mike Yellow

I am not worring about choosing a server. That is easy for me.

  17. ☭Mike Yellow

I am not worring about which server is hosted by which software. That is easy for me.

  18. ☭Mike Yellow

I am not worring about which server is hosted by which software or available servers. That is easy for me.

  19. ☭Mike Yellow

I see that Tigase is “extremely modular” on github. So I guess the room configurations could be extremely different in different tigase servers?

  20. ☭Mike Yellow

As for Openfire, the public servers for now do not provide configuration text in users' language, but that is not hard to understand with the help of machine translation, I guess.

  21. Guus

This was fixed in the last nightly build.

  22. ☭Mike Yellow

    > This was fixed in the last nightly build. Yes, so I say “the public servers for now” instead of directly “Openfire”.

  23. Licaon_Kter

    Guus: rather edgy?

  24. Guus

    ?

  25. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Guus: rather edgy? What does this mean in English?

  26. Licaon_Kter

On the edge = nightly fixes

  27. ☭Mike Yellow

    …… Nevermind.

  28. Guus

I coincidentally merged that change yesterday. Would be good to do some more testing on that feature, actually.

  29. Wojtek

    > I see that Tigase is “extremely modular” on github. So I guess the room configurations could be extremely different in different tigase servers? modular means you can extend code, MUC configuration options are defined in MUC specification

  30. ☭Mike Yellow

    >> I see that Tigase is “extremely modular” on github. So I guess the room configurations could be extremely different in different tigase servers? > > modular means you can extend code, MUC configuration options are defined in MUC specification Oh, thank you for explaining.

  31. MattJ

    > MUC configuration options are defined in MUC specification Yes and no... it's true that XEP-0045 defines some options, but there is no obligation to use those options, and absolutely the possibility of adding others

  32. MattJ

Prosody and Tigase both do this

  33. MattJ

Actually for Tigase I'm thinking of the MUC registration form where it has some custom fields, I haven't reviewed its configuration form

conversations.im can you please look into this?

I'm getting a lot of bs jids from your server

  37. Maranda[x]

TheCoffeMaker: *he resolved it* Metronome does support temporary tombstoning when a redirection is set upon room destruction. Yet the solution here is restricting room creation only to admins, if you care so much about the MUC service tideness.. which you can of course do via config.

  38. TheCoffeMaker

    Maranda[x], indeed

  39. Licaon_Kter

Maranda[x]: so it's a matter of Clients doing "the right thing™"

  40. Licaon_Kter

    ?

  41. Maranda[x]

No, more the room owner either specifying a redirection on destruction or the admins restricting creation to 'emselves as I said?

  42. Licaon_Kter

We are lost in translation :))

  43. Licaon_Kter

    Owners/Admins use clients too...

  44. Licaon_Kter

If I'm used w/ Conversations, and it has a "destroy room" I kisda expect it to "do the right thing™" so the room is at least for a while "dead"

  45. Licaon_Kter

If I'm used w/ Conversations, and it has a "destroy room" I kinda expect it to "do the right thing™" so the room is at least for a while "dead"

  46. Maranda

Licaon_Kter thumb rule is in over a decade of XMPP development, the only client I seen doing the right thing with dataforms was Gajim, sorta.

  47. nuegia.net

    Vacuum-im's forms work well

  48. Licaon_Kter

Eg. Conversations, if the room was destroyed shows a banner with "destroyed, wanna leave?"

  49. Licaon_Kter

I ask from the perspective of a noob room admin as ☭Mike Yellow tries to create guides for noobs. And saw them play with Psi/Gajim etc and it helps to know which one is ok etc

  50. Maranda

Licaon_Kter i would also like to point out that Metronome by default doesn't do instant rooms... So when a room doesn't exist it needs to undergo the creation process which involves submitting the configuration form. And C AFAIR, along some others, doesn't present that to the user and even send a form automatically specifying the room to be persistent... So *aherm* *double cough* very 🤣™️™️

  51. Licaon_Kter

We'll users want that usually so yeah...

  52. Maranda

But this "users want that usually" client (mis)behaviour does actually bypass the main protocol mean to simply prevent accidental cluttering of the MUC service disco with rejoins without creation restrictions or complex tombstoning... 🤷

  53. moparisthebest

    > the main protocol mean to simply prevent accidental cluttering of the MUC service disco Where does anything say this lol

  58. moparisthebest

"I think you want to create a muc to talk to your friends, please fill out this form you know nothing about first" ? Lol
