    > Hlw. Can somebody help me setting up push notifications in Conversations android app? Conversations typically uses your XMPP server for notifications. It should be pretty lightweight and not very taxing on battery life, unlike Element/Matrix. XMPP has really good extensions for push notifications, and UnifiedPush is not even necessary to have a good low-battery notification experience.

  3. Squeaky Latex Folf

Or actually idk whether UnifiedPush is used by default or not. If it is then I guess I'm mistaken and that's what gives it its edge in ultimate push notification performance. If not, guess I'm right

  4. Squeaky Latex Folf

But in my experience I've never had an issue with mobile XMPP clients hogging the battery or notifications coming very late

  5. Squeaky Latex Folf

Notifications usually arrive within 5 seconds

  6. Squeaky Latex Folf

On Element notifications arrive minutes later, or never

Squeaky Latex Folf: unified push uses XMPP as a push server for apps that aren't light on battery like XMPP, for example, Tusky

  10. Squeaky Latex Folf

Oh so unifiedpush isn't meant for XMPP?

  11. Squeaky Latex Folf

Also what actually happens when a mobile device goes to sleep? Does it still receive message or presence stanzas? Is the TCP connection still fully open?

  12. Licaon_Kter

Squeaky Latex Folf: Conversations (and Monal iOS to a degree) tries to keep a connection alive as much as possible

  13. Licaon_Kter

    > Oh so unifiedpush isn't meant for XMPP? XMPP already does the same, eg. You can use Conversations as a Distributor

  14. Squeaky Latex Folf

Pretty cool how keeping TCP connections open doesn't cost much battery

  15. Squeaky Latex Folf

Or maybe it does cost a lot of battery and that's why a regular phone battery doesn't last more than a few days

  16. Squeaky Latex Folf

Compared to Nokia 3310s that last weeks

  17. fireburner

I guess you meant "years" XD

  18. Squeaky Latex Folf

    It lasts years?

  19. Squeaky Latex Folf

  20. Squeaky Latex Folf

My alarm clock lasts more than 5 years

  21. Squeaky Latex Folf

Maybe we can hit 10 years

  22. Squeaky Latex Folf

But the previous battery pair started leaking so I had to replace it in 2017

  23. allbombson

  32. Licaon_Kter

allbombson: that IP was creating spam accounts on zp1 a few days ago, yes

  33. allbombson

I am starting work full time soon

  34. allbombson

If I get a chance I'll try remember all this xmpp stuff and delete the accounts

  35. allbombson

Blacklist ip in nftables or something

  36. allbombson

I publically apologize for any spam that may happen in the meantime

  37. allbombson

    Just made another account too

  38. Licaon_Kter

allbombson: just stick around here and you'll get pinged if ...

  39. allbombson

    I'll try to!

  40. jonas’

allbombson, if you can, try to configure your XMPP client to notify you when someone mentions your domain.

  41. allbombson

I don't think I can do that on conversations

  42. jonas’

    ah, yes, that sounds tricky

  43. allbombson

I just asked a friend (who has root on the vps)

  44. jonas’

you could change your nickname to patchysicp.xyz though :)

  45. allbombson

To block the IP the accounts are coming from

  46. allbombson

So it shouldn't be an issue seeing as this guy has used the same IP for everyone so far
