  2. ☭Mike Yellow

Our comrade is under spam attack.

  3. Licaon_Kter

☭Mike Yellow: settings, disable notifications from strangers, but... Yeah

  4. Guus

holger, anything you can do to help?

  5. ☭Mike Yellow

Do not be worry, just a notification, we have good way to deal with it.

  6. Licaon_Kter

☭Mike Yellow: do get a list of those accounts and PM Holger

  7. ☭Mike Yellow

Just see if you have a good way to recognize them... Err... Oh maybe they used encrypted messages so servers can not detect?

  8. Licaon_Kter

Yes, you, but server admin should be notified

  9. Guus

This is well out of my bubblel, but it's the first time I see this type of spam. Can you tell if this is a native-speaking spammer, or someone likely using a translation service?

  10. Stix (loqi)

I had an exact spam wave like this a few months ago..

  11. Guus

I'm assuming this is Chinese? Most spam that I receive is either in English, or using Cyrillic.

  12. Guus

The amount of people doing this kind of spam (abusive, as opposed to commercial) seems to be limited to a few. I'm wondering if this is a new person, or someone that is using a Translation service.

  13. Stix (loqi)

You can try to use gajim's console to filter presence stanzas and regex them?

  14. Stix (loqi)

You can try to use gajim's console to filter presence stanzas and regex them? so you can gather a list of jids to report to the server operator

  15. ☭Mike Yellow

The receiver is a Room Moderator for political use, someone fool is not happy because they is denied. The comrade is lazy to learn XEP-0016 even I have reminded many times, but this event taught them.

  16. Stix (loqi)

dunno how bad your case is but i had over 500 different accounts spamming me

  17. Guus

ugh. That's annoying. The effort that some people are willing to put in just to harass someone else sometimes surprises me.

  18. ☭Mike Yellow

    > This is well out of my bubblel, but it's the first time I see this type of spam. Can you tell if this is a native-speaking spammer, or someone likely using a translation service? The spammer just complaining “why you ban/block me?”, nothing else, except the first message in the screenshot says “We are planning to attack the server”.

  19. ☭Mike Yellow

    > dunno how bad your case is but i had over 500 different accounts spamming me Not severe, the spamming was manually but not done by machine.

  20. ☭Mike Yellow

    > ugh. That's annoying. The effort that some people are willing to put in just to harass someone else sometimes surprises me. The more an Open Room(/XMPP) being well-known, the more its Moderator(/Users) being spammed.

  21. MattJ

    Just don't have JIDs public?

  22. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Just don't have JIDs public? Do not worry, that is not an account for personal daily use. It can be abandoned at any time.

  23. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Just don't have JIDs public? Have JIDs public is needed, for example, famous people can use it to prevent from being faked.

  24. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Just don't have JIDs public? Have JIDs public is needed, for example, famous people can use this way to prevent from being faked.

  25. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Just don't have JIDs public? Have JIDs public is needed, for example, famous people can use this way to prevent from being faked. Surely they must have the help of XEP-0016.

  26. Guus

Mike, your constant insistence on XEP-0016 is getting very annoying.

  27. MattJ

My advice is to let the discussion drop, we've had it before and I don't think opinions will be changed :)

  28. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Mike, your constant insistence on XEP-0016 is getting very annoying. Why? Is not that useful? And I did not request any developers to add it.

  29. ☭Mike Yellow

You mates did not give me any better solution for this problem to help us to keep our way promoting XMPP, yeah?

  30. Guus

Repeating the same desire/opinion is not useful, if others have long ago expressed their feedback.

  31. Guus

If you want to use Privacy Lists, switch to an implementation that supports them, or build something yourself / have something build for you.

  32. ☭Mike Yellow

You mates did not give me any better solution for this problem to help us to keep our way promoting XMPP for more newcomers (and more spammers), yeah?

  33. ☭Mike Yellow

Guus,I am not a real user of Spark IM or Openfire, please do not think I am expressing unsatisfied to you. On the contrary, Openfire supports XEP-0016, I never be angry to you.

  34. Guus

People (who are not necessarily my mates) seem to disagree with you. I have no strong opinion on the matter, but find the continuous re-iteration of the same conversation annoying.

  35. ☭Mike Yellow

This report is not useless, since you said: >This is well out of my bubblel, but it's the first time I see this type of spam.

  36. Guus

I have no problem at all with the reporting of spam. I am only annoyed by the many references to XEP-0016.

  37. ☭Mike Yellow

Guus, will you be mad if more users report more spammers without mentioning XEP-0016? Will you try to tell them >“Just don't have JIDs public?” like MattJ has done or will you try to tell them “accept the risk of being spammed” or “do not be personal famous in XMPP world”.

  38. ☭Mike Yellow

Guus, will you be mad if more users report more spammers without mentioning XEP-0016? Will you try to tell them >“Just don't have JIDs public?” like MattJ has done or will you try to tell them “accept the risk of being spammed or being faked” or “do not be personal famous in XMPP world”.

  39. ☭Mike Yellow

I have half-promised that we will make XMPP users ×10 and they are happy with that definitely. In the meanwhile definitely they should know there would be more spammers too.

  40. Lightning Bjornsson

    let's... egh.

  41. Lightning Bjornsson

    be careful mate.

  42. Guus

That is a different discussion - one that I will not get into now. I am calling out that I notice and am annoyed that you keep stressing your desire to have XEP-0016, even after your intended audience has already given you their response. You do not agree with them, which is fine, but that is not a reason to keep pestering people. There are various ways for you to get XEP-0016. The worst way for you to get what you want is to continue to annoy the same people (and as a byproduct: many other people) from which you want something.

  43. ☭Mike Yellow

    >I did not request any developers to add it. ×2 Then I am here, to say in public: I do not get any changed in mood whatever others do or not do anything!!!

  44. ☭Mike Yellow

Whatever others remove all XEP-0016 support or they do nothing!

  45. ☭Mike Yellow

Whatever others remove all XEP-0016 support or they do nothing or they add more support!

  46. ☭Mike Yellow

Only so few people need it, why do you care? This will not influence on others promoting XMPP without support of something.

  47. Guus

I do not understand what you're trying to say.

  48. ☭Mike Yellow

    >Yes, you, but server admin should be notified That is way I reported here. To reassure you, then I said: >Do not be worry, just a notification, we have good way to deal with it. If you can promise no one to ask what way is that, then I can promise to taboo that specification number.

  49. ☭Mike Yellow

    >Yes, you, but server admin should be notified That is why I reported here. To reassure you, then I said: >Do not be worry, just a notification, we have good way to deal with it. If you can promise no one to ask what way is that, then I can promise to taboo that specification number.

  50. ☭Mike Yellow

Was there some Chinese (or others) users request you to add XEP-0016 so you were bothered? And that is why you are annoyed when seeing that specification number? If that is ture, I can take half of Chinese users (or at least 30%) to leave XMPP.

  51. Guus

Again, I do not understand what you're trying to say. Please stop asking for the same thing over and over again.

  52. ☭Mike Yellow

    I stop here.

  53. ☭Mike Yellow

    > ☭Mike Yellow: do get a list of those accounts and PM Holger > You can try to use gajim's console to filter presence stanzas and regex them? so you can gather a list of jids to report to the server operator Oh sorry I forgot to reply about it. I think can not do that, and I think our user manual maintainers will not write that too, they can not add too much technical details or the manual becomes a developer manual and more complex with more pages. That is more complex than something which can block them. After spammers find that they are blocked, they will stop registering and spamming surely.

  54. ☭Mike Yellow

  55. ☭Mike Yellow

Licaon_Kter, you did not tell me who the server host of “conversations.im” is before, now I got it, I think I will not report it publicly here next time.

  56. ☭Mike Yellow

Licaon_Kter, you did not tell me who the server host of “conversations.im” is before, now I get it, I think I will not report it publicly here next time.

  57. Licaon_Kter

☭Mike Yellow: can you rephrase? Holger is one admin yes, you should send the spammer info/proof/etc to them directly yes

  58. ☭Mike Yellow

They... seem like have no desktop computer beside, and most of them are computer newbies, it could be called as a “great achievement” to be an Open Room Moderator already. I do not think they are patient and willing to learn commands...

  59. ☭Mike Yellow

    So, nevermind.

  60. ernst.on.tour

I though Mike is missunderstandig. This is the XMPP-Server-Operator-MUC. The Operator had to generate the regex, the spammer list and could offer it to Holger The "normal" user never should have to generate s.th. like this, because this in responsible to the serveradmin.

  61. Licaon_Kter

Well, we can use whatever we get. If it's systematic spam, maybe some pics of the spammers jids and timeframes (timezones) might help.

  62. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Well, we can use whatever we get. If it's systematic spam, maybe some pics of the spammers jids and timeframes (timezones) might help. Oh good. Now I am going to ask comrade for info.

  63. ernst.on.tour

    > Well, we can use whatever we get. If it's systematic spam, maybe some pics of the spammers jids and timeframes (timezones) might help. Yeah, but do you real want to get the spammer list from each "normal" user ? The serveroperator should do a pre-filtering.

  64. ☭Mike Yellow

    >Oh good. Now I am going to ask comrade for info. They decided to use the other way to solve this problem. Nevermind.
