  1. ☭Mike Yellow

What happened? I lost all my chat rooms which I set auto-join as off in my bookmarks. carlos, something happened on suchat.org?

  2. ben

    It's working for me

  3. ☭Mike Yellow

It looks like I lost all chatrooms, because others nickname has been reset.

  4. ☭Mike Yellow

ben, you are from suchat.org too?

  5. ben

No but I'm connected to it

  6. ben

    Could be a nick conflict

  7. Licaon_Kter

☭Mike Yellow: lost means what? Not in your bookmarks anymore?

  8. ☭Mike Yellow

    >Not in your bookmarks anymore? Yes.

  9. Licaon_Kter

Sounds like a server issue then, try to "save" all your bookmarks again in your client

  10. ☭Mike Yellow

I guess some rooms remained because one of my client did not go offline manually. The client added some back immediately after they lost.

  11. ☭Mike Yellow

  12. ☭Mike Yellow

    Yeah. Not a big problem.

  13. ☭Mike Yellow

Not it works normally, they can be saved successfully.

  14. ☭Mike Yellow

Now it works normally, they can be saved successfully.

  15. carlos

    > carlos, something happened on suchat.org? ☭Mike Yellow: I am not the admin of suchat

  16. ☭Mike Yellow

Oh, sorry. Duplicate username with them.

  17. ☭Mike Yellow

    carlos@suchat.org

  18. carlos

Good question what he has here in this MUC for a nickname.

  19. ☭Mike Yellow

    carlos_, hello.

  20. carlos_

    Good morning, Carlos_

  21. carlos_

    Good morning, carlos_

  22. ☭Mike Yellow

    Good afternoon.

  23. carlos_

Yes, changes were made, the XMPP server was updated, I'm going to check it.

  24. ☭Mike Yellow

Ah. Then nevermind. It is normal, I think. Thank you.

  27. Licaon_Kter

That sounds bening given last months issues :))

  28. Link Mauve

eevvoor, Menel, Licaon_Kter, everyone affected, they unbanned our biboumi while we are trying to reach a solution. I can’t work on that right now, I’m at work atm.

  29. Licaon_Kter

I host my own so not affected, but thanks for the heads up

  30. eevvoor

    Link Mauve, cool :)

  31. Squeaky Latex Folf

Damn, how is conversations.im abuse team so bad. I email them a suspicious JID associated with the spammer we have been suffering from, and they just reply with "this JID doesn't exists anymore."

  32. Squeaky Latex Folf

They don't log user signups or something?

  33. Ge0rG

Squeaky Latex Folf: log what exactly from user signups?

  34. Squeaky Latex Folf

    IP address and such

  35. Ge0rG

And what to do with them? 95% of abuse comes from Tor exits, 5% from residential dynamic IP dialups

  36. Squeaky Latex Folf

Well this spammer does use Tor exit nodes, except the spambots come from an OVH VPS

  37. MattJ

Squeaky Latex Folf, "have been" suffering from, or "are suffering from"? Conversations.im abuse handling is pretty good, and accounts are deleted quickly, so it's extremely possible that the account was gone by the time you reported it (or by the time the person who replied to your email looked at it)

  38. Squeaky Latex Folf

Well I would've liked more details than "this JID doesn't exists anymore."

  39. MattJ

If they are denying that a JID that is actively spamming *right now* exists on their server, then obviously something is wrong

  40. Squeaky Latex Folf

I've literally gotten more info from a Japanese XMPP provider whose admin spoke Japanese to me and I spoke English back and we used a translator to understand each other

  41. Licaon_Kter

Squeaky Latex Folf: are you expecting server admins to handle you the spammers IP and unencrypted chats or what exactly?

  42. ☭Mike Yellow

    Is private message enabled here?

  43. MattJ

    No

  44. ☭Mike Yellow

I did not get “sending failed” when I tried to PM someone.

  45. Squeaky Latex Folf

» [16:36:54] <Licaon_Kter> Squeaky Latex Folf: are you expecting server admins to handle you the spammers IP and unencrypted chats or what exactly? I'm not expecting it, but some help in that regard to track down the spammer is really useful

  46. Squeaky Latex Folf

But I already know some IPs of the spammer now. In particular the EFF Tor exit node, and an OVH VPS

  47. ☭Mike Yellow

I did not get “sending failed” when I tried to PM someone. Oh, on Gajim. On Conversations I got it.

  48. ☭Mike Yellow

Hello Squeaky Latex Folf, would you like to talk with me privately? My XMPP address is: militiaman@suchat.org

  49. jonas’

Squeaky Latex Folf, what kind of help? passing out the IP and stuff to random people would not be acceptable under GDPR.

  50. jonas’

also, did you ask for specific additional information in your initial request?

  51. Squeaky Latex Folf

Well just saying the ISP responsible

  52. Squeaky Latex Folf

e.g. EFF Tor exit node, or OVH

  53. Squeaky Latex Folf

And how is one supposed to deal with spam and be compliant with GDPR?

  54. Squeaky Latex Folf

Is every internet-facing service required to comply with GDPR?

  55. Squeaky Latex Folf

Or are only businesses required to comply?

  56. Menel

People handling with other users data are

  57. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

i would be *very* worried if a server didnt want to comply with gdpr

  58. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    any server that is

  59. jonas’

anyone who deals with user data from EU citizens in a non-household-activity-fashion needs to be GDPR compliant.

  60. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    (that handles other people's data)

  61. jonas’

that does not just include business

  62. jonas’

that does not just include businesses

  63. Squeaky Latex Folf

I guess with lots of non-commercial entities and individuals running internet services, no one really wants to deal with regulations and legal issues like that

  64. Squeaky Latex Folf

Maybe IRC wasn't so bad, with IP as public info

  65. Squeaky Latex Folf

Just kidding. Anonymity is a useful thing, but it makes locating the source of a spam attack a tad harder

  66. ☭Mike Yellow

Squeaky Latex Folf, I have an idea, but let us talk in private?

  67. Squeaky Latex Folf

    Wasn't private message disabled, supposedly?

  68. ☭Mike Yellow

Use normal private message instead private message in room.

  69. ☭Mike Yellow

    Add me to contact: militiaman@suchat.org

  70. Licaon_Kter

Squeaky Latex Folf: spoilers ahead, idea is `16`

  71. Squeaky Latex Folf

    What do you mean?

  72. Licaon_Kter

    /jk

  73. Squeaky Latex Folf

    What does that even mean?

  74. Squeaky Latex Folf

    What is a `16`?

  75. Squeaky Latex Folf

And what does that have to do with an idea?

  76. MattJ

It's an attempt at a joke because Mike frequently states that XEP-0016 is a solution to most problems, but we requested to curtail those endless debates here. Which may be the reason for requesting a private chat instead.

  77. ☭Mike Yellow

    DO NOT GUESS BLINDLY!!!

  78. ☭Mike Yellow

I did not want to get on this topic!

  79. MattJ

    Thanks Licaon_Kter

  80. Squeaky Latex Folf

I'm curious about this XEP-0016 discussion. Anyone got a log?

  81. Licaon_Kter

    No pls

  82. Squeaky Latex Folf

Or can you say when it happened?

  83. Squeaky Latex Folf

    Perhaps I already recorded it

  84. Squeaky Latex Folf

Yeah I only have 1500 messages in my database

  85. Squeaky Latex Folf

    That's unfortunate

  86. jonas’

    Squeaky Latex Folf, https://logs.xmpp.org/operators/2023-10-09#2023-10-09-2fcf077ca0dc3a36

  87. jonas’

and let that be the end of this discussion.

  88. ☭Mike Yellow

    Oh your god...

  89. MattJ

That was the request to end the endless discussions, one of those discussions was https://logs.xmpp.org/operators/2023-09-22#2023-09-22-3ee6714381285ddf

  90. MattJ

That should answer any questions about opinions on both sides, so indeed we don't need to discuss it

  91. Trung

    🤣

  92. Licaon_Kter

Squeaky Latex Folf: notice that they did not post the same link :)

  93. Squeaky Latex Folf

    What about it?

  94. ☭Mike Yellow

    > What about it? Ingore them, please.

  95. ☭Mike Yellow

MattJ, jonas’, I never thought that you remember history so long. Please forget about that and reduce about mentioning the long history I preform in these rooms.

  96. ☭Mike Yellow

    >Please forget about that and reduce about mentioning the long history I preform in these rooms. Considering I am the first leader who promote XMPP for Chinese in recent years.

  97. jonas’

☭Mike Yellow, we just want to avoid this particular unproductive discussion.

  98. ☭Mike Yellow

    > ☭Mike Yellow, we just want to avoid this particular unproductive discussion. The best doing is not to mention that, even when another one mentioned, do not follow it.

  99. ☭Mike Yellow

    > ☭Mike Yellow, we just want to avoid this particular unproductive discussion. The best doing is not to mention that, even when another one mentions, do not follow it.

  100. ☭Mike Yellow

    And better to retract/moderate it.

  101. jonas’

☭Mike Yellow, certainly, you'll notice that neither me nor MattJ mentioned it initially. It was Licaon_Kter, superfluously.

  102. ☭Mike Yellow

    Licaon_Kter, oh your God!

  103. Licaon_Kter

Or you can just drop it now instead of carry it along ☭Mike Yellow?

  104. ☭Mike Yellow

I did try to urge developers to make XMPP softwares more suitable for serving political communications. But now I already know your opinions, I do not bother you again. I hope you can forget about unpleasant history and not mention me in that history again. Maybe someone day I do not want others know I am the leader of promoting XMPP in 2023.

  105. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Or you can just drop it now instead of carry it along ☭Mike Yellow? >I did not want to get on this topic! I said.

  106. jonas’

☭Mike Yellow, it is not your fault that it started. It is your fault currently that it goes on.

  107. ☭Mike Yellow

Then stop talking about that. We make our own decisions now.

  108. ☭Mike Yellow

Licaon_Kter, do not mention that number, OK? It is an order! Make a promise!

  109. Licaon_Kter

☭Mike Yellow: I've made a joke, even signaled it, an *hour* ago, drop it already.

  110. ben

Can someone post a summary of this conflict? I scrolled back but can't even figure out what you are talking about

  111. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Can someone post a summary of this conflict? I scrolled back but can't even figure out what you are talking about No!!!

  112. ben

I need in on the drama

  113. techmetx11

    XMPP drama news network

  114. ☭Mike Yellow

    > ☭Mike Yellow, it is not your fault that it started. It is your fault currently that it goes on. Seriously, to tell the truth, it was doomed that currently it goes on when I join XMPP at the beginning. Because I come here not for simplely family communicating. And more severe, there may be more people (especially Chinese users) bothering you with spam topic. The only way to solve it is reducing XMPP users, especially the kind of users who know that shit. I can drive them away efficiently in one month, if you want.

  115. ben

☭Mike Yellow: there's a room for such topics related to adoption and such. This room is just for technical issues like federation and moderation that concerns the admins

  116. ☭Mike Yellow

ben, I am an advanced user, I do not think I need more help or suggestions. Thank you.

  117. ☭Mike Yellow

ben, oh, do you know a room which specially for foreigners of XMPP? Which people can comment about many protocols and platforms at will?

  118. ben

Yes let me look. I'm thinking of the rooms on joinjabber.org

  119. ben

No one is foreign on XMPP. We are one global family

  120. ☭Mike Yellow

No. My “foreigner” means... Internet users from others protocols and platforms, just like Visitors/tourists who come to XMPP temporarily.

  121. ben

    https://search.jabber.network/search?f=y&q=joinjabber.org&sinaddr=on&sindescr=on&sinname=on

  122. ☭Mike Yellow

I...I do not think I can talk about disadvantages of XMPP in those rooms...

  123. ☭Mike Yellow

The kind of room... for people to talk about “which protocol to choose”.

  124. ben

    Try Reddit

  125. ☭Mike Yellow

    > Try Reddit Sorry. Nevermind. That is a hell of the kind of people like me.

  126. ben

    Indeed.

  127. bkil

☭Mike Yellow: How about don't talk so much? 🤷
