I think my swap device may be too complex for a crashing system. Just got off the phone with someone. We came to the conclusion I should try to setup a nvme namespace the size of the system's memory so coredump(8) may work.

right now i'm having to look through historical bsdcon videos because the handbook's swap and dump documentation hasn't been updated since major changes.

for anyone federating, expect a few more hiccups these next few hours as I try and figure things out. Hopefully this can be fixed eventually.

nuegia.net, swap is easy, you create a GEOM swap partition in your disk slice, swap can only be a 100MiB, depends on what you think might get dumped, to be safe.

nuegia.net, you mention that it is a VM, is the microcode on your host machine updated?

it's not a vm, it's a vnet jail on bare metal. the kernel on the bare metal is crashing from the pid inside a jail. yes the microcode has been updated, i confirmed it in dmesg
