for a few days now, yes

How did that happen? They used to be the largest server out there

jonas’, strange I had some online signs in between

jonas’
eevvoor, might be that it's flapping.

definitely

I've been trying to rejoin a MUC there every now and then and didn't have any success for days now.

I sent two lines directly after each other, the first arrived, the second was swallowed :D

I think what happened to jabber.de is a data privacy disaster. Users did not know that their data changed owner and couldn't react. I also wrote to a friend with a jabber.de account and our private communication including pictures is now in the hands of some unknown people in Poland.
-
Licaon_Kter
matthias: but it's okay, those are omemo encrypted, right? ....right?,
-
matthias
Licaon_Kter: no. My friend has an iPhone and iPhone clients were not compatible to omemo for a long time.
-
Licaon_Kter
matthias: but they are since 2020 or so...
-
Licaon_Kter
They never upgraded? (Lol ChatSecure has omemo since 2018 but...)
-
matthias
Licaon_Kter: after having a lot trouble with omemo we decided to do not use it. It was OK for me because I trusted the old owner of jabber.de who did a good job until he transfered his service to new guys.
-
Licaon_Kter
Yeah, so much for that...

I've tried before, to start coding/webdev channels, but so far this one's off to a humble start if anybody casually wants to chat about coding/programming/webdev type stuff: xmpp:coding@chat.toofast.vip?join

Just complaining about free services. 😤

I'm really sorry that the new Adminteam has so much problems. But probably they now realize how much time and energy that Server needed.

Jabber.de wrote the Adminchange in the News Imagine WhatsApp would transfer data to Poland and just publish the news on the website. For something significant like that people need to be informed personally. Who regularly reads the jabber.de website?

yeah this was discussed at the time. that the operator should have warned the people using the server before

damnit seriously jabber.de is sinking or what? what's wrong with their host? give it to me!
-
chunk
and, if you're not going to use your own hosted services, you have no right to complain, end of story there
-

dunno if i read that right

i will happily take over remotely that host, for free

lol, free, yea, or dirt cheap

i can fix it

well what are the parameters of this jabber.de issues, i realize they chose a major XMPP based domain, and thus became a major XMPP domain/host, and i remember that they had database migration issues not too long ago, and their admin might've been too shy to ask for help from anybody, but what's the issue now?
-
chunk
imo the domain and host together are simply holding a place, in that *.de and jabber.*
-
chunk
I could be swayed into buying domain, or something, if it's too much of a burden, or otherwise give me a shell, hmu
-
chunk
ima like buy jabber.ca
-
chunk
i wonder if that's even taken hue hue

AIUI, the current admins of jabber.de haven't yet interacted with the community during this downtime.
-
jonas’
given the general negativity in here, I cannot blame them.
-
chunk
how many users does they have about? i should check but gajim busted :| if iot's like more than 20 I would want to use an announce adhoc option and announce to all users, or set a pubsub, that sends to all users, or something

Yes, blaming does not help, even though I am angry about the situation myself. I supported in the past here trying to get them help. I would really love that we can find a round of folks that can help the admin in case they need the help. But I also don't know how to reach them

somebody should smuggle their way in

chunk
do some epic load balancing and redundancy check

Licaon_Kter, chunk's recent stuff can be read as extremely dismissive and negative, and sad jokes definitely don't help people struggling to keep a difficult service running for free.

I deserve to partake, I'm an operator of an xmpp server, have been for 4 years
-
jonas’
first of all, there's no such thing as a "right to partake".
-
jonas’
secondly: Licaon_Kter mentioned Rpi5 in passing in the context of deploying an xmppd; that's different than an in-depth discussion of the Raspberry Pi line of devices and their specs.
-
chunk
yea, and you said i was being negative, yet i was offering my help and curiousity to the way that other thing was oddly taken care of, you ALL (plural) can back go back to ur keyboards and leave this chunk tf alone cuz you're harassing m

chunk, threatening people is unacceptable behaviour, time out
-
Licaon_Kter
Their speech is a little blunt usually (but in Offtopic context that's a meh mostly), I'm not sure they're bad intended... :)
-
jonas’
re-reading, I might've been too harsh about claiming negativity in their earlier statements.
-
MattJ
I didn't even read back that far, but coming to this tab and finding a checklist of off-topic, profanity and threats is enough to warrant at least a temporary ban to cool off
-
jonas’
fair 'nuff, I'm apologizing for what I said in 1:1 now
