    > jabber.de also down here Still no comment on Homepage, no reaction to Email ... I believe they have gone forever.

  2. emus

    pure fun ...

  3. eevvoor

    jabber.de is down again?

  4. jonas’

for a few days now, yes

  5. antranigv

How did that happen? They used to be the largest server out there

  6. eevvoor

jonas’, strange I had some online signs in between

  7. jonas’

eevvoor, might be that it's flapping.

  8. eevvoor

    definitely

  9. jonas’

I've been trying to rejoin a MUC there every now and then and didn't have any success for days now.

  10. eevvoor

sometimes some messages suddenly come through :D

  11. eevvoor

I sent two lines directly after each other, the first arrived, the second was swallowed :D

  12. jonas’

    so you crashed it!!

  13. eevvoor

    But now it looks like this: 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (I) gajim.client Connect 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (I) gajim.client State: ClientState.CONNECTING 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (E) nbxmpp.stream (jabber.de) Unable to connect to jabber.de 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (I) gajim.client State: ClientState.RECONNECT_SCHEDULED

  14. eevvoor

    But now it looks like this: ``` 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (I) gajim.client Connect 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (I) gajim.client State: ClientState.CONNECTING 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (E) nbxmpp.stream (jabber.de) Unable to connect to jabber.de 27.11.2023 09:43:26 (I) gajim.client State: ClientState.RECONNECT_SCHEDULED ```

  15. matthias

I think what happened to jabber.de is a data privacy disaster. Users did not know that their data changed owner and couldn't react. I also wrote to a friend with a jabber.de account and our private communication including pictures is now in the hands of some unknown people in Poland.

  16. Licaon_Kter

matthias: but it's okay, those are omemo encrypted, right? ....right?,

  17. matthias

Licaon_Kter: no. My friend has an iPhone and iPhone clients were not compatible to omemo for a long time.

  18. Licaon_Kter

matthias: but they are since 2020 or so...

  19. Licaon_Kter

They never upgraded? (Lol ChatSecure has omemo since 2018 but...)

  20. matthias

Licaon_Kter: after having a lot trouble with omemo we decided to do not use it. It was OK for me because I trusted the old owner of jabber.de who did a good job until he transfered his service to new guys.

  21. Licaon_Kter

    Yeah, so much for that...

  22. chunk

I've tried before, to start coding/webdev channels, but so far this one's off to a humble start if anybody casually wants to chat about coding/programming/webdev type stuff: xmpp:coding@chat.toofast.vip?join

  23. chunk

    hi Licaon_Kter nice hat o/

  24. chunk

Soon will have i2p service for this host on xmpp ^^

  25. chunk stoked as hell to learning i2p network

  26. devilz

    > I think what happened to jabber.de is a data privacy disaster. Users did not know that their data changed owner and couldn't react. I also wrote to a friend with a jabber.de account and our private communication including pictures is now in the hands of some unknown people in Poland. Thats not true. Jabber.de wrote the Adminchange in the News

  27. schäfchen726

    I can confirm this.

  28. devilz

Just complaining about free services. 😤

  29. devilz

I'm really sorry that the new Adminteam has so much problems. But probably they now realize how much time and energy that Server needed.

  30. Licaon_Kter

    > Just complaining about free services. 😤 I do it all the time, it helps, I then proceed to fix them :))

  31. devilz

    >> Just complaining about free services. 😤 > I do it all the time, it helps, I then proceed to fix them :)) 🙄

  32. eevvoor

    matthias, 🍏️🤣️🔏️

Jabber.de wrote the Adminchange in the News Imagine WhatsApp would transfer data to Poland and just publish the news on the website. For something significant like that people need to be informed personally. Who regularly reads the jabber.de website?

  34. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

yeah this was discussed at the time. that the operator should have warned the people using the server before

  35. Licaon_Kter

matthias: > Imagine WhatsApp would transfer data to *an actual EU country with GDPR* and just publish the news on the website. For something significant like that people need to be informed personally. Who regularly reads the *whatsapp.com* website? Imagine that

    >> Thats not true. Jabber.de wrote the Adminchange in the News > Imagine WhatsApp would transfer data to Poland and just publish the news on the website. For something significant like that people need to be informed personally. Who regularly reads the jabber.de website? Its EU and Server location is Germany. No Problem for GDPR ...

  37. devilz

    > yeah this was discussed at the time. that the operator should have warned the people using the server before We did that. 😡

  38. chunk

damnit seriously jabber.de is sinking or what? what's wrong with their host? give it to me!

  39. chunk

and, if you're not going to use your own hosted services, you have no right to complain, end of story there

  40. chunk

dunno if i read that right

  41. chunk

i will happily take over remotely that host, for free

  42. chunk

lol, free, yea, or dirt cheap

  43. chunk

    i can fix it

  44. chunk

and will bother to announce things

  45. Licaon_Kter

chunk: when my RPi5 arrives I'll do that too :)

  46. chunk

well what are the parameters of this jabber.de issues, i realize they chose a major XMPP based domain, and thus became a major XMPP domain/host, and i remember that they had database migration issues not too long ago, and their admin might've been too shy to ask for help from anybody, but what's the issue now?

  47. chunk

imo the domain and host together are simply holding a place, in that *.de and jabber.*

  48. chunk

I could be swayed into buying domain, or something, if it's too much of a burden, or otherwise give me a shell, hmu

  49. chunk

    ima like buy jabber.ca

  50. chunk

i wonder if that's even taken hue hue

  51. jonas’

AIUI, the current admins of jabber.de haven't yet interacted with the community during this downtime.

  52. jonas’

given the general negativity in here, I cannot blame them.

  53. chunk

how many users does they have about? i should check but gajim busted :| if iot's like more than 20 I would want to use an announce adhoc option and announce to all users, or set a pubsub, that sends to all users, or something

  54. emus

    > jonas’: > 2023-11-27 01:45 (GMT+01:00) > AIUI, the current admins of jabber.de haven't yet interacted with the community during this downtime. > given the general negativity in here, I cannot blame them. Yes, blaming does not help, even though I am angry about the situation myself. I supported in the past here trying to get them help. I would really love that we can find a round of folks that can help the admin in case they need the help. But I also don't know how to reach them

  55. emus

mail does also not seem to work

  56. emus

    > chunk: > 2023-11-27 01:46 (GMT+01:00) > how many users does they have about? i should check but gajim busted :| if iot's like more than 20 I would want to use an announce adhoc option and announce to all users, or set a pubsub, that sends to all users, or something more than 4000

  57. chunk

    hiya emus

  58. emus

I migrated on contact by now already

  59. chunk

    holy moley 4000 @_@

  60. emus

    likely even more

  61. jonas’

that's active users, not just accounts, right?

  62. jonas’

that's peak active users, not just accounts, right?

  63. chunk has never worked with a database of such magnitude

  64. chunk imgaine this is a rack server somewhere at a datacenter

  65. Licaon_Kter

jonas’: was there negativy here? Maybe sad jokes, but it's not like we can help...or I for one did not see them reach out, whatever

  66. emus

    > jonas’: > 2023-11-27 01:50 (GMT+01:00) > that's peak active users, not just accounts, right? I think you are right, then we alao talk about 10-20k maybe devliz seem to be here and maybe can help with the new admin

  67. chunk

somebody should smuggle their way in

  68. chunk

do some epic load balancing and redundancy check

  69. jonas’

Licaon_Kter, chunk's recent stuff can be read as extremely dismissive and negative, and sad jokes definitely don't help people struggling to keep a difficult service running for free.

  70. chunk

    jonas, nice oppressive language pal

  71. chunk

    luv u too 😘

  72. chunk

i said gimme a shell, lets do this

  73. jonas’

    chunk, excuse me?

  74. chunk

    excuse yourself

  75. chunk

    why you so negative sir

  76. ernst.on.tour

Licaon_Kter: > chunk: when my RPi5 arrives I'll do that too :) I'm on the list for it since 1st of October. First contingent was sold without a chance to me, 2nd contingent also. Keep fingers crossed that you will get one.

  77. chunk

i wonder what it's specs will be

  78. Licaon_Kter

    chunk: use a search engine...

  79. chunk

but im a slave to the rave (xmpp)

  80. chunk

    https://soundcloud.com/m-project_suzumoto/m-project-kamikaze-rave-ting

  81. chunk

from 3 to version 4 was a massive boost, was nearly twice the performance, and im content with my rpi3b+, so i imagine rpi5 will be cake of cakes

  82. Licaon_Kter

chunk: pls keep offtopic in offtopic

  83. chunk

lmao u brought up the rpi's

  84. chunk

    nice try

  85. chunk

I deserve to partake, I'm an operator of an xmpp server, have been for 4 years

  86. jonas’

first of all, there's no such thing as a "right to partake".

  87. jonas’

secondly: Licaon_Kter mentioned Rpi5 in passing in the context of deploying an xmppd; that's different than an in-depth discussion of the Raspberry Pi line of devices and their specs.

  88. chunk

yea, and you said i was being negative, yet i was offering my help and curiousity to the way that other thing was oddly taken care of, you ALL (plural) can back go back to ur keyboards and leave this chunk tf alone cuz you're harassing m

  89. chunk

i came in good spirits, but ofc u, of all, has some shit to deliver to my square, ya, beat it

  90. chunk

that's your only existing warning, ever, and then you don't wanna know what will happen

  91. MattJ

chunk, threatening people is unacceptable behaviour, time out

  92. Licaon_Kter

Their speech is a little blunt usually (but in Offtopic context that's a meh mostly), I'm not sure they're bad intended... :)

  93. jonas’

re-reading, I might've been too harsh about claiming negativity in their earlier statements.

  94. MattJ

I didn't even read back that far, but coming to this tab and finding a checklist of off-topic, profanity and threats is enough to warrant at least a temporary ban to cool off

  95. jonas’

fair 'nuff, I'm apologizing for what I said in 1:1 now

  96. Guus

I must be getting old, but I was under the impression that I was reading rap or hip hop lyrics

  97. devilz

    >> jonas’: >> 2023-11-27 01:50 (GMT+01:00) >> that's peak active users, not just accounts, right? > I think you are right, then we alao talk about 10-20k maybe > > devliz seem to be here and maybe can help with the new admin No time for that kind of support. Thats one of the reasons i handed the service over.

  98. emus

devilz: would be possible to at least get the person to contact the round?

  99. emus

I didn't meant to ask for direct work on the server maintenance

  100. devilz

    > devilz: would be possible to at least get the person to contact the round? I'll try

  101. rrbd1957

    > > devilz: would be possible to at least get the person to contact the round? > I'll try Thx!

  102. emus

    Thank you very much

  103. maike

never trust the service, trust the software

  104. maike

    encrypt for the future

  105. Martin

jabber.de seems to be up again.

  106. maike

    Should it be considered co-opted?

  107. Roi

    > jabber.de seems to be up again. What was the problem, again?

  108. Martin

Don't know, but I guess they'll tell within the next days.

  109. rrbd1957

Jabber.de is up for me. Good news.

  110. antranigv

can anyone help me figure out

  111. antranigv

    if I’m getting sppamed?

  112. Licaon_Kter

    What do you see?

  113. antranigv

    a registration per second

  114. nuron (anoxinon.me)

    +1

  115. Licaon_Kter

Oh, random names? Do they do something afterwards?

  116. antranigv

    so far? nothing

  117. Licaon_Kter

    Ah, _the long game_

  118. nuron (anoxinon.me)

Every registration from another IP. Just closed registrations for the moment

  119. antranigv

    I see nothing in common

  120. antranigv

I will just send a single message and delete
