XMPP Service Operators - 2023-11-28

admin (jabber.de): Are you availble to reach here?

  2. debacle

Dear jabber.de admins: I have some important contacts on your server. I'm willing to pay one..two € a month to keep my contacts there, instead of having them to migrate to other servers. If e.g. 100 people do the same, would it help, to have a more reliable server hosting? E.g. at Hetzner or Hostsharing e.G.? (Funny to mix the Latin "exempli gratia" with the German "eingetragene Genossenschaft".) No need to answer now, but please think about it. Thanks!

    > Our server was rebooted or shut down unexpectedly. As a precaution we have reissued the SSL certificates and have looked for possible signs of why this occured. The server was only brought online when we could confirm there was no tampering. Unfortunately the admin with the credentials to the website and email was offline over the weekend. This has been fixed. We hope the good uptime over the past few months is in indication we are making better progress keeping the service operational. Each time we have an outage we try to make sure the same issue does not occur in the future - lack of communication is unacceptable and for that we apologize. Statement from jabber.de admin, jabber.de support room yesterday, 11 p.m.

  8. emus

    Happy to donate as well

  9. eevvoor

    +1

  10. eevvoor

    #metoo

  11. matthias

I guess that devilz might wonder why there was no happy donation party when he was running the server without problems over years

  12. eevvoor

    I agree 😆️.

  13. debacle

matthias I don't want (and can't) donate to all servers, where I have contacts on. jabber.de is not even the most important one for me, but it is the one, which seems to scream for help. My contacts, who are actually using jabber.de, are probably not willing to give money. They say: "Why? I can use WA for free!"

  14. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

Its a culture change yeah. It takes a while to realize that servers dont run on hopes and dreams but people who need food to eat

  15. eevvoor

Let's then start with the servers which run seamlessly for decades.

  16. eevvoor

Not being available on the weekend to provide the password is not really screaming for help btw ...

  17. moparisthebest

That's specifically not something money will help with, unless someone is donating enough to hire staff for 24/7 on-call, and no one is

  18. eevvoor

    exactly

  19. debacle

MSavoritias (fae,ve) Donations will not be enough to feed people, sorry. That's why I wrote "to have a more reliable server hosting". I'm talking about 50..100 €/month.

  20. debacle

    E.g. 100 people donating 12 €/year.

  21. MattJ

debacle, if you're looking for that model, Snikket hosting? :)

  22. moparisthebest

*moparisthebest climbs back up on soap box* This is why everyone capable should host their own server for family+friends, public servers provide a valuable service but are just temporary stepping stone to full communication sovereignty

  23. debacle

MattJ That is certainly an option! ATM, I'm happy, if I don't need to tell my three, four, five contacts on jabber.de, that they don't need to migrate :-) But if they need to migrate, I'll look for options with solid financing.

  24. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    > MSavoritias (fae,ve) Donations will not be enough to feed people, sorry. That's why I wrote "to have a more reliable server hosting". I'm talking about 50..100 €/month. Subscription based? Sure. I wasnt talking about donations specifically

  25. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

I dont talk about funding necesserily either

  26. debacle

MSavoritias (fae,ve) Yes, there are multiple options. Unfortunately, most people want the service for free.

  27. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

Because they have been told the "company" has to find a source for funding. Or its advertisements.

  28. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

We can show/told them why its that is the wrong assumption in xmpp

  29. eevvoor

    Just as for mail ...

  30. eevvoor

    the same prob there

  31. emus

    > debacle: > 2023-11-28 06:11 (GMT+01:00) > E.g. 100 people donating 12 €/year. This back then I discussed that the cost at the size of jabber.de the annual cost per user would be less than 1€ So, I think donation of some parts should cover costs and hopefully also maintenance cost if we add a little more

  32. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

Sure. How do you convince people to pay though?

  33. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    Pay the operators specifically

  34. emus

I know its hard, but there are ways

  35. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    I agree

  36. emus

Most people in my circles were happy to join, but they left because push notification were not working or other stuff

  37. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

    Same
