  4. mightyBroccoli

A Proxy died and took the egress with it. Service is back up and running again.

  8. Polarian

    > easy... https://thespandroid.blogspot.com/2024/03/Whatsapp-Third-Party-Chats-Oboarding-Video.html Still one of the most stupid laws I have ever seen

  9. Licaon_Kter

You just love to buy a different SIM card for each of your friends network, right?

  10. Polarian

privacy via oppression of freedom? just wrong.

  11. Licaon_Kter

Or a different ISP contract for each different site, yes

  12. Polarian

    why would you need that?

  13. Licaon_Kter

Because you can't talk with them, they are in a different network. There's no interoperability.

  14. Polarian

I don't believe distribution of data across big companies is the way to fix it

  15. Licaon_Kter

Or maybe I've misjudged the "law" you talk about?

  16. Polarian

    > Or maybe I've misjudged the "law" you talk about? Don't be a twat

  17. Polarian

    mocking me is uncalled for

  18. Licaon_Kter

It's not about that, albeit that might happen. Also, I don't want other companies involved...

  19. Licaon_Kter

    Didn't mock anything...

  20. Licaon_Kter

Focus on my words, see the parallels I've drawn...

  21. Polarian

you made a quote from one of my emails to the ML

  22. Licaon_Kter

    Wat the wat?

  23. Polarian

anyways it is a big problem, my friend showed exactly how insane it is, he has about 10 different social media apps for different groups of friends

  24. Polarian

but most of the time people converge to one... normally Discord for the younger generation.

  25. Polarian

making these more appealing through interop isn't the way to go

  26. Polarian

I've found 99% of the time, if someone is a true friend, they will not mind using XMPP

  27. Polarian

its actually an amazing way to cut out arseholes... they won't bother

  28. Licaon_Kter

The "normal" is always is flux, today is Discord? Will fade. Also, the normal should be one that is standardised, open protocol and federated. Then you'd not have 10 apps, but one...

  29. Licaon_Kter

    > I've found 99% of the time, if someone is a true friend, they will not mind using XMPP > > its actually an amazing way to cut out arseholes... they won't bother _Preach brother, this is the truth distilled._

  30. Polarian

    > The "normal" is always is flux, today is Discord? Will fade. > > Also, the normal should be one that is standardised, open protocol and federated. > > Then you'd not have 10 apps, but one... so why support a regulation which yet again, restricts freedom?

  31. Polarian

people should have the choice on what to use

  32. Licaon_Kter

Note that Facebooks "malicious compliance" $hit that they did is not the spirit of the law, let alone the letter. Feel free to judge the law, not what Meta does... have some separation.

  33. Polarian

Its like git hosting platforms, if someone sticks their code on github you might have to use it to contribute... but you would never dream of using github for your own code... you have the freedom to choice

  34. Polarian

now say if EU comes along and says "all git platforms should interop", that freedom goes poof

  35. Polarian

and that means even "privacy friendly" git solutions feed data to other instances

  36. Polarian

    _such as github_

  37. Licaon_Kter

git is federated, via email, everyone knows that already

  38. Licaon_Kter

Public is public, no harm in that.

  39. Polarian

    > git is federated, via email, everyone knows that already I have been told to piss off when offering to send a patch

  40. Polarian

people don't use patch anymore... its all PRs

  41. Polarian

    so that federation, is gone.

  42. opinionplatform.org

    > The "normal" is always is flux, today is Discord? Will fade. > > Also, the normal should be one that is standardised, open protocol and federated. > > Then you'd not have 10 apps, but one... One more silo to rule them all? Lol

  43. Polarian

    >> The "normal" is always is flux, today is Discord? Will fade. >> >> Also, the normal should be one that is standardised, open protocol and federated. >> >> Then you'd not have 10 apps, but one... > One more silo to rule them all? Lol nice lord of the rings reference \o/

  44. Polarian

anyways, forcing privacy goes against peoples freedom, the choice should be there...

  45. Polarian

I've told people before the malicious stuff discord gets up to, and they simply say they don't mind... it doesn't concern them. They knowingly choice to use it... why force them otherwise?

  46. Polarian

_I'm not saying you are wrong, but IMO you should never take away freedom for anything else..._

  47. barlas

Well, but we don't allow people freedom to do harmful stuff, even to themselves. There are laws for that 😀

  48. Polarian

    > Well, but we don't allow people freedom to do harmful stuff, even to themselves. There are laws for that 😀 Maybe I'm too libertarian, but I don't believe a powerful entity such as the government, or EU, should have the right to tell people how to live their lives and what they should or should not do... I am not anarchist... I still believe in some authority to ensure people remain safe... but for something like internet consumption, they should have no right to tell people what to do.

  49. Polarian

If someone wants to shoot themself in the foot, its their choice.

  50. Licaon_Kter

Polarian: > people don't use patch anymore... its all PRs Well, their lost, walk await, it wasn't meant to be.

  51. Licaon_Kter

opinionplatform.org: > One more silo to rule them all? XMPP is not a silo

  52. opinionplatform.org

    Licaon_Kter: Theory vs practice

  53. opinionplatform.org

    > Then you'd not have 10 apps, but one... Smells like one silo.

  54. agh

    > people don't use patch anymore... its all PRs > > so that federation, is gone. Too true, I dislike the Git bandwagon.

  55. Hanketsu

    > The "normal" is always is flux, today is Discord? Will fade. > > Also, the normal should be one that is standardised, open protocol and federated. > > Then you'd not have 10 apps, but one... don't you mean you'd have 10 apps, but with one underlying wire?

  56. snikket dot deeeeee

Then you could have one app, but talk to people having another. Like email.

  57. snikket dot deeeeee

That's the thing about xmpp. Not everyone of you uses the client I currently use. Let alone the server

  58. Polarian

    > That's the thing about xmpp. Not everyone of you uses the client I currently use. Let alone the server that's good

  59. Polarian

you guys complain about good things -_-
