XMPP Service Operators - 2024-04-20

  1. Polarian

Take a note from apple here, people do not want to mess around with tech if they are disinterested

  2. Polarian

giving them the pieces to their communication and telling them to build it

  3. Polarian

they will likely go with a "prebuilt" solution like whatsapp, signal discord etc

  4. Polarian

your "solution" would, in fact, turn people more towards centralisation than decentralisation.

  5. Polarian

It is so easy to sign up to providers that it is actually a problem because of spammers.

  6. Polarian

The vast majority of people are not too concerned about their data, or being spied on... its all about ease of use.

  7. Polarian

Make it as easy as possible for them to use something which gives them more freedom...

  8. Polarian

When I first started using XMPP, I used a public provider... I then learnt to self host it out of interest... I couldn't honestly say I would have bothered using XMPP if I was forced into self hosting it at the beginning

  9. Polarian

TL;DR providers provide the ease of use for most, and enough privacy for the majority, if *YOU* personally want more freedom, you can self host without any issues...

  10. snikket dot deeeeee

You're too chatty 🙂, if your own messages are >10 in a row something is wrong. Please stop

  11. snikket dot deeeeee

This is still the operators room. Not the monolog room

  12. Polarian

    > This is still the operators room. Not the monolog room sorry... got too into discussing self hosting vs providers

  13. Polarian

    > You're too chatty 🙂, if your own messages are >10 in a row something is wrong. Please stop Yes I have the Java Disease

  14. cascabek

    Is that what it's called?

  15. alghareb

Polarian: the problem is self hosting or providers both are paid and I don't use any online paymenting service.

  16. rewtkid

    Buy monero.

  17. moparisthebest

Host it on your home internet connection

  18. alghareb

rewtkid: how I have no paymenting service not even upi

  19. alghareb

moparisthebest: yeah I can do that.

  20. Polarian

    > Polarian: the problem is self hosting or providers both are paid and I don't use any online paymenting service. some are free

  21. Polarian

    > Host it on your home internet connection violates TOS

  22. Polarian

you can void your broadband contract doing that

  23. moparisthebest

maybe, maybe not, do it anyway

  24. rewtkid

alghareb: you can do cash by mail, wire transfer, anything. its a peer 2 peer exchange.

  25. alghareb

    rewtkid: which service offer that

  26. alghareb

    ?

  27. rewtkid

sorry, localmonero.co. i thought i sent the link already.

  28. Licaon_Kter

Is everyone forgetting that grandmas today were born at the same time as the Internet? That by the time they were teens, students, started working, computers and Internet was all around them? Or is this proverbial grandma raising chickens in the proverbial country side and being reused as a trope?

  29. snikket dot deeeeee

Either way, would be nice if one of the children or grandchildren would host snikket for her.

  30. snikket dot deeeeee

I think it's enough if every 6th self hosts, doesn't have to be everybody 😉

  31. Licaon_Kter

    Right

  32. Holger

Could be seen as a privacy issue though, if I have access to the metadata of wife/family/friends.

  33. snikket dot deeeeee

Yes, as with all operators we choose to login, it comes down to trust.

  34. Licaon_Kter

I have this on my mind too, as an admin, also why I insist on OMEMO. They can register an account elsewhere, no problem for me. :)

  35. Holger

OMEMO doesn't help with me seeing who my wife is talking to, how much, at what times. Personally I'd clearly prefer an external provider for that reason.

  36. Licaon_Kter

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  37. snikket dot deeeeee

Maybe she has a second account for _these_ contacts 🙂.

  38. Martin

    One account per husband?

  39. jonas’

    :D

  40. opinionplatform.org

TBH, things like Briar with only personal apps have appeal, if only network effect happened. But operators like operating servers, and we can't seem to let that client-server thing go.

  41. Martin

I have not yet seen a solution that works really serverless, stable and doesn't drain battery.

  42. opinionplatform.org

Servers use power too. You pay with your money instead of your battery. Stable: well, what server has 100% availability?

  43. jonas’

also we're drifting off-topic with shifting discussions to briar and other p2p systems. this room is for discussing operating XMPP services and closely related things (such as severe Linux bugs), not briar.

  44. opinionplatform.org

JMP - Snikket customer here, fairly happy, but always open to new or old better things. 🙂

  45. opinionplatform.org

    > Host it on your home internet connection moparisthebest: Do you shift to cellular over a data hotspot when home internet is unavailable?

  46. moparisthebest

    >> Host it on your home internet connection > moparisthebest: Do you shift to cellular over a data hotspot when home internet is unavailable? I have that set up... I've never had to use it yet

  47. fireburner

    Wgy us mopar the best?

  48. jayteeuk

    >> Host it on your home internet connection > violates TOS > > you can void your broadband contract doing that Really? What ISP doesn't allow you to host services on your broadband?

  49. Licaon_Kter

jayteeuk: think they have some terms about "commercial activity"

  50. moparisthebest

So using it to join zoom (XMPP) meetings for your job?

  51. ernst.on.tour

There are some contract in german ISP that doesn't allow "commercial" use of an home-line. Normal home-office is allowed, because you don't offer something. Your privat next/owncloud is also allowed, regardless if you offer the pictures from the last football-bbq. But hosting a phpBB may get you in trouble. They don't check you traffic, but if your datarate comes over a limit, they will habe look.

  52. Licaon_Kter

Also, they might force you to a "commercial" contract by changing IPs

  53. moparisthebest

Even if your IP changes every minute and your ISP forbids hosting you can buy a $2/month VPS and use it's IP from home over wireguard, I can help anyone with such a setup if you need it (we'll move to another channel)

  54. Licaon_Kter

_"Yeah but then you get an vps, yeah but then you become your own isp, yes bgp is easy..."_

  55. snikket dot deeeeee

A friend and family xmpp server isn't commercial and the traffic is low. So nothing of this has something to do with the original argument. (I'm happily self hosting in Germany a bunch of much more data intensive stuff at home, different providers over he years, nobody nobody batted an eye

  56. snikket dot deeeeee

  57. jayteeuk

Blimey. This isn't something I've ever come across, but something to keep in mind before I go back to self hosting and ditch my VPS.

  58. Polarian

    > A friend and family xmpp server isn't commercial and the traffic is low. So nothing of this has something to do with the original argument. > (I'm happily self hosting in Germany a bunch of much more data intensive stuff at home, different providers over he years, nobody batted an eye) you have liability

  59. Polarian

    they can sue for damages

  60. Polarian

you share domestic connections, you have fair use

  61. Polarian

if you are disturbing the service because you want to self host, you either will be terminated, fined or moved to a business backhaul which is more expensive

  62. Polarian

    (varies by country and company)

  63. Polarian

there are isps out there which are self hosting friendly... but they are more expensive for a reason

  64. rewtkid

would not be a problem for what he is hosting, like the other guy said the traffic will be very low i doubt the ISP would bat an eye.

  65. snikket dot deeeeee

Please. Let that be my problem. Also I'm not disturbing anything

  66. rewtkid

anyways this seems to be very off topic

  67. Maranda

Polarian that largely depends on the contract and jurisdiction an ISP can't just "terminate or move things" like that without risking being liable.

  68. moparisthebest

mitre.org compromised so *someone* has all the yet to be released vulns now, great... https://twitter.com/vxunderground/status/1781427278393540620 Watch your servers I guess? Good luck

  69. snikket dot deeeeee

I wonder if Twitter is the only place where this information is disclosed.

  70. Martin

Would be weird if this information would only be shared with musk and friends on xitter…

  71. moparisthebest

    Found a better source https://www.mitre.org/news-insights/news-release/mitre-response-cyber-attack-one-its-rd-networks

  72. snikket dot deeeeee

Maybe they should publish a cve for it 🏃

  73. Licaon_Kter

    > With frameworks like ATT&CK®, Engage™, D3FEND™, and CALDERA™ and a host of other cybersecurity tools, MITRE arms the worldwide community of cyber defenders. They actually solved one of the 2 hard problems in computing, daaamn

  74. snikket dot deeeeee

    Naming things?

  75. Licaon_Kter

    Gotcha :))

  76. moparisthebest

    XMPP did it first

  77. rom1dep

How do you guys feel about monal being kicked out of the Chinese app store? (Followed by a bunch of other Meta services), Is it that XMPP has finally picked the interest of the Chinese censors?

  78. Polarian

    > How do you guys feel about monal being kicked out of the Chinese app store? (Followed by a bunch of other Meta services), > Is it that XMPP has finally picked the interest of the Chinese censors? its probably just a minor thing... for completeness

  79. Polarian

not that the Chinese fear XMPP

  80. Polarian

    > Polarian that largely depends on the contract and jurisdiction an ISP can't just "terminate or move things" like that without risking being liable. depends on the country... here in the UK a breach of contract gives an ISP the right to terminate your service immediately... they can even bill you fines although I don't know what the law is about not paying this...

  81. Polarian

I have never known an ISP to terminate though... its in the terms of service but never have they actually enforced it... (that I know of)

  82. Polarian

DHCP and port bans make their lines undesirable to host on anyways

  83. Maranda

Breach of contract is one thing, but otherwise no one can tell you what you can or you can't do with a service you pay if it's within laws' boundaries and the terms of service, and if they do they have to follow the appropriate steps otherwise, this is what an ISP can incurr into: - breach of contract - unwarranted/unnotified service suspension - damages And in the end "_I_ billed 'em" very dearly for it.

  85. snikket dot deeeeee

Well, here in Germany generally we can do what we want with the connection There is no word about hosting at home in my contract, the only thing they disallow is spam, network spam, open proxy, "hacking" etc. So even commercial use it seems.

  86. snikket dot deeeeee

I heard Vodafone is common there, and they are hard to host on... friend of a friend tried...

  88. snikket dot deeeeee

Yeah, many are ipv6 only. DS-lite

  89. snikket dot deeeeee

I host on ipv6 only too currently, was too greedy for continuing something with ipv4. Luckily our mobiles have ipv6 too. And for some http services others use too, I've a reverse proxy on a vps.

  90. Polarian

    > Yeah, many are ipv6 only. DS-lite I heard its the other way around? most are IPv4 CGNAT

  91. Polarian

    guess I was told wrong

  92. snikket dot deeeeee

Yeah, we are an ipv6 land. Maybe > 10 years ago it was the other way around

  93. Polarian

    is 5222.de owner here?

  94. Polarian

    I'm being alted from 5222.de

  95. Polarian

    > can we get this guy put on the blocklist? > xmpp:920london@conversations.im ineedvpn@5222.de is an alt

  96. Licaon_Kter

    > Yeah, many are ipv6 only. DS-lite The funny part is when fixed lines are, but mobiles have no ipv6

  97. Polarian

    >> can we get this guy put on the blocklist? >> xmpp:920london@conversations.im > ineedvpn@5222.de is an alt templeos@5222.de is too

  98. snikket dot deeeeee

Interestingly I only know mobile carriers that have ipv6

  99. Polarian

    >> Yeah, many are ipv6 only. DS-lite > The funny part is when fixed lines are, but mobiles have no ipv6 opposite here... EE does IPv6 but most broadband is IPv4/

  100. Polarian

    >> Yeah, many are ipv6 only. DS-lite > The funny part is when fixed lines are, but mobiles have no ipv6 opposite here... EE does IPv6 but most broadband is IPv4

  101. snikket dot deeeeee

By I believe that there are very different parts in the world. Many from the US complain most. 😊. I guess that is because they have so much more ipv4 addresses for themselfs, the pressure wasn't high enough

  102. Polarian

I assume its easier for carriers to use IPv6 with NAT64

  103. Polarian

    >> ineedvpn@5222.de is an alt > templeos@5222.de is too oaoooo@5222.de is too

  104. Polarian

    > oaoooo@5222.de is too discord@conversations.im is too

  105. Polarian

man they wont leave me alone

  106. amarachi

What is the status of the xep for telling other servers the registration date of an account?

  107. snikket dot deeeeee

Other servers? Didn't yet hear of that.

Im having an issue with spam

  119. moaoo

You were talking about it earlier so i just wanted to ask

  120. moaoo

    Polarian:

  121. Polarian

you were making comments about my autism go away

  122. Polarian

    and stop with the porn

  123. moaoo

Yeah the spammer usually tries to insult people however he can

  124. moaoo

He tried to "heal" me but it didnt make sense to me so i just ended up blocking him, my problems shouldnt be of his concern.

  125. Polarian

    my mistake

  126. Lightning Bjornsson

What the hell are you two doing

  127. Polarian

no no, don't get me confused with him

  128. Polarian

hes here to troll the channel

  129. Lightning Bjornsson

moaoo, it would appear you are new, and a harassing troll.

  130. moaoo

We were just discussing the troll

  131. Lightning Bjornsson

"the troll" you mean yourself, moaoo ?

  132. moaoo

Since he constantly nags at me for attention

  133. moaoo

    > "the troll" you mean yourself, moaoo ? No

  134. Lightning Bjornsson

    fuck off, morph

  135. Lightning Bjornsson

my suspicion is that this is not the same morph I know, but a new type of morph from a different background

  136. moaoo

    Now im morph apparently

  137. moaoo

I have no idea who morph is

  138. Lightning Bjornsson

Basically a troll who chases people into channels, especially channels they mod but also large public channels, and diatribes about them, making themself look extremely crazy

  139. Polarian

    I need /ignore

  140. moaoo

    Oh thats the templeos guy

  141. Polarian

    that is you

  142. Polarian

you are one of the many alts

  143. moaoo

    No im not

  144. Lightning Bjornsson

Well no, you type nothing like morph, who always has perfectly spell-checked and grammar-checked paragraphs, sometimes very long

  145. Lightning Bjornsson

Whereas you chat like a normal, if very pressed, person

  146. Lightning Bjornsson

at risk of causing you even more embarassment, why did you post a picture of a young lady with a giant dick earlier?

  147. Polarian

not going to turn this channel into an argument, you are clearly here to troll... I am sure a moderator will be around to banning you shortly... please wait in line 🙂

  148. moaoo

    > Well no, you type nothing like morph, who always has perfectly spell-checked and grammar-checked paragraphs, sometimes very long > > Whereas you chat like a normal, if very pressed, person > > at risk of causing you even more embarassment, why did you post a picture of a young lady with a giant dick earlier? Templeos spammed me with it

  149. Lightning Bjornsson

at risk of causing you even more embarassment, why did you post a picture of a young lady, naked below the waist, with a giant dick earlier?

  150. moaoo

Theres no way for me to go back and delete it lol

  151. Lightning Bjornsson

who is templeos? the templeos person has been dead for multiple years

  152. moaoo

He goes by the name templeos on xmpp

  153. moaoo

    He believes in transvestigation

  154. Lightning Bjornsson

    lol?

  155. Lightning Bjornsson

    this is ridiculous

  156. moaoo

Yeah hes a flat earther too

  157. Lightning Bjornsson

    Who

  158. Lightning Bjornsson

    And why does it matter?

  159. moaoo

  160. moaoo

    > Who > > And why does it matter? Templeos

  161. Lightning Bjornsson

    And who is templeos

  162. Polarian

Lightning Bjornsson, stop feeding the troll

  163. moaoo

    He doesnt stop pushing it

  164. moaoo

    > And who is templeos A troll, the one youre speaking of

  165. moaoo

He doesnt do much else so i see why youre always wary of people here being hin

  166. Lightning Bjornsson

Polarian, I think I won't. They're too funny, and besides, this gives the moderators of the world more evidence (as if they needed it) of this person being not worth our time

  167. Lightning Bjornsson

anyway I'm done with them now

  168. moaoo
