XMPP Service Operators - 2024-06-16

  1. Trung

how do i `/disco items` from `search.jabber.network`? there's a xmpp server there but like …… how to get list of MUCs via XMPP rather than HTTP ?

  2. Menel

Did you see that xmpp API? https://search.jabber.network/docs/api

  3. Trung

first time ever see that link

  4. Menel

Was in the Footer under "for developers"

  5. Trung

    i've never clicked that =]]]]]]

  6. Trung

…… so i need to write raw xml to get results ? ……

  7. Menel

You need to copy some code from the conversations app I guess 😅

  8. Menel

    Since it's already all there

  9. Trung

yeah …… XMPP has UX problem =]]] aniway thank you

  10. Menel

Well this is development, on a non xeped API... It's unfair to make that a UX problem. Unrelated you may be right. But this would be the same on any technological basis

  11. Trung

i think XEPs has little to do with UX. If api@search.jabber.network is a chatbot like memberbot@xmpp.org or all the Slidge's bots, it would be much easier to just talk to it

  12. MattJ

Chat isn't a great UI for everything. There is the web UI, and there is also a UI in Conversations, and another one in Gajim. The API is important for developers to be able to easily integrate the search. A chat-based UI wouldn't be ideal for users or developers.

  13. MattJ

Importantly, nobody is expecting users of the service to write raw XML 😄

  14. nuegia.net

every couple of minutes gajim pops up with 'critical error'

  15. nuegia.net

and lags out doing basiclly anything

  16. nuegia.net

ui completely changes every couple of versions

  17. nuegia.net

    usually for the worse

  18. nuegia.net

unfortunately everything else is worse or unmaintained

  19. nuegia.net

i don't know how much maintained is worth if this is considered 'maintained'

  20. nuegia.net

    i used to use vacuum-im

  21. nuegia.net

unfortunately, all anyone seems to care about now is making smartphone UIs even on computers

  22. nuegia.net

it's sad because ten years ago the XMPP ui situation was much better, so we literally regressed

  23. nuegia.net

if things continue to get worse over the next couple of years i'll probably be looking at abandoning xmpp

  24. nuegia.net

which is a shame because the servers are really good, but if their barely usuable because the client software if so bad and continues to get worse their usefulness is limited

  25. nuegia.net

UI is important. You can't just ignore that.

  26. nuegia.net

what's also sad is cellphones are monopolized too so in a couple of years all the current work on only caring about the smartphone experience is going to be completely obsoleted and deprecated with the next big tech regime makeover

  27. nuegia.net

where they throw everything out and make everything from scratch all over again.

  28. nuegia.net

because progressive enhancement is for chumps... or something like that

  29. nuegia.net

the latest version of gajim even forces omemo use you can't turn it off so chat history on my other devices or usage over other clients is fubar

  30. nuegia.net

    this is a miserable experience

  31. worlio.com

I agree the desktop client space for XMPP is suffering and almost starved.

  32. Kris

it doesn't force omemo and the UI is fine. The issues you see are clearly on your side, not Gajim in general

  33. worlio.com

All I need to care about with Gajim is it is GTK3+ which means its a big UX mess.

  34. worlio.com

Nothing in GTK3+ looks good and breaks uniformity within the desktop. I don't know why people still use it.

  35. nuegia.net

  36. nuegia.net

worlio.com, that's certainly part of it

  37. nuegia.net

    but not all of it

  38. worlio.com

What infurriates me the most about modern XMPP desktop client designs is that they seem to take after the look of Skype and Discord for some reason, even though this design is more annoying to use and provides no real benefit.

  39. nuegia.net

    gajim 0.16.9 worked pretty well

  40. nuegia.net

than it went off the deep end

  41. Kris

I think we are getting widely off-topic here

  42. moparisthebest

fork and maintain it yourself, or switch to something else, regardless don't complain about it here
